Rape convict tells court he is juvenile
Panchkula, January 31 Yesterday, Saajan was convicted for raping a 13-year-old girl of Surajpur. Today, when the court was about to announce the quantum of sentence, Saajan submitting an application claiming that he was juvenile and furnished a birth certificate to substantiate the claim. The certificate was made in Bihar from where the accused hails. After receiving the application at the eleventh hour, the court directed the police to verify the birth certificate produced by the accused. The case has now been deferred. In April, the victim, a student of Class VIII, was on her way to the school when Saajan allegedly kidnapped her. He took her to Bihar where he raped her repeatedly, revealed police investigations. After the incident, the victim's father had alleged delay in arrests made by the police. He searched for his daughter and provided the kidnapper's location to Panchkula Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). In his complaint, the victim's father said when he called up the investigating officer and told him that his daughter was in Bihar and they should rescue her, the police officer said they were short of women police officials. The accused was arrested on July 31 last year. In August 2013, the District Legal Services Authority had got the girl medically examined after she was recovered by the police from Bihar. The tests conducted at the General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, confirmed that she was seven-week pregnant. Later, the DLSA had moved an application in the court requesting for the medical termination of pregnancy (MTP), which was conducted at Kalka. |

Student killed in mishap
Mohali, January 31 The police identified the deceased as Arpit Sood, a student of the college at Tangori. According to reports, Sood had gone to drop a friend at the Landran college. As he was getting out of his car, a speeding Duster car hit him and dragged him along for some distance. He reportedly died on the spot. The Duster later collided with three other cars, injuring three students. The injured were shifted to a hospital. Reports said the police personnel present at the spot failed to arrest the driver of the Duster. However, a case has been registered. |

Golf coaching programme from March 16
Chandigarh, January 31 The general manager of the Panchkula Golf Club, Brig (retd) IS Punia, said, “We are committed to provide an unforgettable golf learning experience to each participant, members as well as non-members of the club.” The coaching programme is exclusively designed for beginners, children and teenagers and will be organised by a certified coach, Ajay Gujral, European Golf Teachers Federation. The Junior Golf Training Programme will have a total of eight coaching days and will be held on every Sunday from 9.00 am to 10.30 am. The organisers said their idea is to promote golf in the region and give an opportunity to everyone from the tricity to learn the art of playing the game. In order to provide personalised attention and hands-on instruction to each junior participant, limited number of enrollments will be taken, said an organiser. The programme will focus on the fundamentals of the game including basic swing technique, short game instructions and integration of the core values ranging from proper etiquettes, dress code and good sportsmanship.
