SAD, BJP rift out in the open in Amritsar
Tribune News Service

Amritsar, January 25
The ongoing confrontation between the SAD and the BJP over the former’s demand for transfer of two Municipal Corporation (MC) officials today took an ugly turn. The BJP councillors made public their anger against the SAD move to raise the issue in the open on Thursday. They accused the SAD councillors of being corrupt and also threatened to expose those with a shady background.

The BJP councillors, led by party leader Anuj Sikka, said they were forced to hold a media briefing so as to put forth the facts regarding the controversy before the people. Sikka claimed that the SAD councillors were irked with the transfer of an MC official, who was involved in corrupt practices, but they could not speak out against it. So they came out with the demand for the transfer of two other MC officials, who are discharging their duties honestly.

"They were looking for a pretext to vent their ire and are now targeting these two officials,” he said. The BJP councillors said there was neither any proof nor a complaint against the officials whose transfer was being demanded by the SAD. They strongly defended Local Bodies Minister Anil Joshi and Mayor Bakshi Ram Arora.

They said they would also lead a delegation to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to apprise him of the situation while dubbing the SAD protest as nothing but a misinformation campaign. The BJP leaders said if the SAD councillors had any complaint then they should have taken it up with their party high command. The issue could then have been sorted out at the party level. The SAD should not have gone public on the issue. They said their conscience was clear and a probe should be ordered into the conduct of the SAD as well as the BJP councillors.

Sikka also claimed that the MC under the BJP was working for the development of the city and a proper mechanism had been put in place to check wrongdoings.

He alleged that the MC's approach to curb wrongdoings was hurting the interests of some of the SAD councillors and that was why they were making a big issue out of nothing. Sikka said they were maintaining silence till now due to coalition dharma. Some BJP councillors also warned that if the SAD didn't put an end to its campaign against the BJP, they would expose their councillors, who have a shady backdrop.

On Thursday, the SAD councillors had entered into a heated argument with the BJP councillors during the MC House meeting here and even staged a walkout. They sought the transfer of two MC officials while levelling allegations of corruption against them.

The controversy

  • The BJP said the SAD councillors were irked with the transfer of an MC official, who was allegedly involved in corrupt practices
  • The BJP leaders claim that to settle scores, the SAD demanded the transfer of two other honest MC officials, who were seen as close to the BJP
  • The BJP claims there is no basis to transfer the two said officials

Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) has been given time till February 6 by the court to "investigate" whether Sonia was in the city between September 2 and September 9, 2013, and file its opposition to Gandhi's motion to dismiss the human rights violation lawsuit due to insufficient service of summons.

Sonia had submitted a new declaration on January 13 to the US court in support of her motion to dismiss the lawsuit.

In the declaration, Sonia stated that she was “not in New York or in the US during the said period”. But, the SFJ claimed she was in the city for medical treatment at the Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre. —PTI
