Lok Adalat turns down plea
Mohali, January 25 The Permanent Lok Adalat headed by Jagroop Singh Mahal dismissed an application of Bharti Airtel Ltd, Chandigarh, against Bawa Singh for the recovery of Rs 1,834 as usage charges of a broadband connection and Rs 2,500 as legal expenses of litigation for causing him harassment by filing the frivolous application, which had to be defended by him. According to Bawa Singh, he had already moved an application on February 4, 2011, to Bharti Airtel for deactivating the service with effect from February 7, 2011. No arrears were due from Bawa Singh and the entire amount claimed by Bharti Airtel was the rental of the broadband service after February 10, 2011, which, in view of the request for the deactivation of the service, was not due from him. |

Woman dies in road mishap
Chandigarh, January 25 The deceased has been identified as Neelam Devi (26), a resident of Raipur Khurd village. It is learnt that she was crossing the road when the truck hit her and crushed her lower limbs under its rear wheels. The truck driver, Joginder Singh, has been arrested. The police said the victim was rushed to the GMCH- 32, where she succumbed to her injuries. A case has been registered at Sector 31 police station. — TNS |

Darpan, Eshaan declared best athletes
Chandigarh, January 25 The two-day event concluded with a grand finale. The second day of the meet started with a prayer and a welcome song by the students. The prize distribution ceremony was followed by the performance of aerobics display by students of Class VI. Prateeti House won the best house trophy. Darpan Galhotra (XI-C) and Eshaan Khertarpal (VIII-B) were declared the best athlete in the boys' senior category, while Saundriya Tyagi (X) was declared the best athlete in the girls’ senior category. Animesh Sindhu was declared the best athlete in the boys’ junior category, while the Gauri Sharma (VIIA) was the best athlete in the girls’ junior category. Kamlesh Kumar appreciated the efforts of the school as well as parents who have started taking a keen interest in the activities of their wards. Dr VD Singh, chairman, Gurukul Global, said the experience took him down the memory lane to his school days. He stressed the need for physical activities, along with literary, which seem to have taken a back seat with advent of gizmos, television, Internet, etc. |

Chandigarh, January 25 His Son, Harmilan Singh, front office in-charge, Mountview, bagged a silver and a bronze in the above 35 age category in this championship. They both will now participate in the National Masters Athletic Championship to be held in Jaipur from February 20 to February 24. |
