DMK suspends Karuna’s son for
opposing tie-up with DMDK
Chennai, January 24 "The statement is reflective of the high command's stand," party general secretary K Anbazhagan told reporters on the action against Alagiri, who is also a former Union minister. Karunanidhi, who is favourably disposed toward an alliance with DMDK, had recently distanced himself from Alagiri's remarks against any such alliance besides his criticism of DMDK founder Vijayakant, who also hails from Madurai. In a veiled warning to his son on January 7, the DMK president had said that those going against party diktat on key issues like alliance would face disciplinary action, including expulsion. Incidentally, today's decision to temporarily suspend the Madurai MP from the party came hours after he met his father at the latter's Gopalapuram residence. The timing of the disciplinary action assumes added significance as it comes just ahead of the DMDK meet on February 2 in which Vijayakanth is expected to announce the party with which he would tie up for Lok Sabha poll. DMK leaders feel that the action would send the "right signal" and soothe ruffled feathers of the DMDK leadership. DMDK chief Vijayakanth was offended when Alagiri said he would "never consider captain (as Vijayakanth is addressed by party supporters) as a politician." The actor-politician's party is being aggressively wooed by both the DMK and BJP for an electoral tie-up. On Alagiri's suspension, Anbazhagan said while there were enough platforms and fora within the party to air divergent views and grievances, he had not chosen to use them. "Considering that his continuance in the party is not proper and that it could affect party discipline, Alagiri is being temporarily removed from all party posts including primary membership," Anbazhagan said in the statement. - PTI

Uddhav dubs AAP item girl of politics
Mumbai, January 24 “Clowns and mad men have always been part of Indian politics. First there was Raj
Narain, then Lalu Prasad Yadav did his tricks… Now someone new has come and his name is Arvind
Kejriwal," Uddhav Thackeray said in an editorial in party mouthpiece
Saamna. The Aam Aadmai Party, which had came to power by accident, held Delhi to ransom for two days, Thackeray said. The Shiv Sena leader went on to say that critics of Rakhi Sawant who had performed “item numbers” in films should now honour her as she would make a better Chief Minister than
Kejriwal. Sawant later sent out a message on Twitter thanking Uddhav
Thackeryay. “Thanks to Uddhavji for giving me this compliment (sic)," Sawant tweeted on the networking site.

Bitter regional divide casts shadow over RS poll
Hyderabad, January 24 In an embarrassment to the ruling party, some legislators from Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra regions, jointly referred to as Seemandhra, are planning to field at least two rebel candidates. The elections will be held to fill six posts from the state. The Seemandhra MLAs are in a rebellious mood as they are unhappy with the party high command’s decision to divide the state. In the 294-member Assembly, the Congress has 146 legislators, 97 from Seemandhra and 49 from Telangana while nine members were disqualified for voting in favour of the no-confidence motion against the government last year. Given its present strength, the Congress can win three seats, while it is planning to slot its surplus votes to Telangana Rashtra Samithi, a potential electoral ally. However, the calculations of the ruling party can go awry if the rebels throw their hat in the ring. Senior Congress leader from Rayalaseema and former Minister JC Diwakar Reddy and another rebel leader and MLC KVV Satyanarayana Raju are likely to enter the fray as rebel candidates. Their entry might force the Congress central leadership to initiate disciplinary actions against legislators supporting them. The rebel camp is pinning hopes on support from their Seemandhra colleagues. They are also hopeful of support from the 23-member YSR Congress Party. Several Congress MLAs, including minister G Srinivasa Rao, had reportedly signed the nomination papers of Raju. “I am certainly in the fray,” asserted senior legislator Diwakar Reddy.

No anti-UPA wave in country, says Pawar
Mumbai, January 24 Addressing mediapersons after filing his Rajya Sabha nomination papers, Pawar said: "Even though the main contest will be UPA versus NDA (in the Lok Sabha polls), one has to accept the strength of regional parties in their respective states. Their help will be required for formation of the next government.” The highlight of the general election would be participation of new voters in large numbers, he said. “The winning combination will be the beneficiary of the support of new voters,” he added. To a query on a possible Third Front government, Pawar said: "It was too early to speak about it.” He expressed confidence that people would vote a strong and stable government in the interest of the country to improve and strengthen economy. On Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and Maharashtra Samajwadi Party president Abu Asim Azmi’s statements supporting him for prime ministership, Pawar said: “Let anybody say anything... I am not available.” He said the NCP contested limited number of seats and the party knew its limitations. When asked about the Congress not projecting Rahul Gandhi as its prime ministerial candidate, Pawar said the party had never projected anybody as PM before polls. —

Cong, BJP in copyright tussle over Rahul ad
New Delhi, January 24 The ad carrying the slogan was in the newspapers today, prompting the BJP to remind the Congress that the same slogan had been used earlier by its PM candidate Narendra Modi for his electioneering in Gujarat. Caught on the back foot, Congress spokesperson Shobha Oza said that no party had a birth right over any slogan. “Words in a dictionary are the same. Many people would have used some of them in similar ways at some point of time. That doesn’t mean those words belong to them. By that logic, no one should have had any right over the phrase “Aam Aadmi” because our slogan “Congress ka haath aam aadmi ke saath” is nearly 10 years old,” Shobha said. She was responding to queries about why Congress’ advertising managers used a slogan which had earlier been used by
Modi.

Start exchanging pre-2005 currency notes, RBI to public
New Delhi, January 24 The step has been taken as there are concerns if the public starts refusing to accept pre-2005 notes for day to day transactions, normal day-to-day economic activity would be impacted. The Tribune in its story yesterday had pointed out some of these concerns. If the notes can be exchanged right away then the whole anxiety over the deadline of March 31 would dissipate. “Members of public may initiate the process of exchanging notes at bank branches at their convenience,” the RBI said in a statement. The RBI also for the first time gave its rationale for withdrawing the notes. It said the removal of older currency notes from circulation was a standard international practice. The central bank is already withdrawing pre-2005 bank notes in a routine manner through banks as they have fewer security features than those printed subsequently. The RBI circular issued today also tried to allay public concerns saying the volume of such notes that are being withdrawn from circulation was not significant enough to affect the public. “The notes printed prior to 2005 will continue to be legal tender,” it said, adding that even after July 1, any number of these old series notes can be exchanged by people at bank branches where they have accounts.

India, Pak in touch to settle trans-LoC trade stand-off
New Delhi, January 24 Sources here said the Indian High Commission in Islamabad was in constant touch with the Pakistan Foreign Office to settle the issue so that normal trade and travel could be resumed between the two countries. Indian High Commissioner TCA Raghavan has met the Pakistan Foreign Secretary and other senior officials in this connection over the past two days. Pakistan is insisting that India release the truck driver, identified by sources as Mohammed Shafi, while New Delhi says he would face the full force of the Indian law for the crime he has committed. Meanwhile, relatives of 27 Indian truckers, who are not being allowed by the Pakistani authorities to return home, are a worried lot since they are unable to even communicate with them. The Indian authorities say the Pakistani trucker had sought to smuggle
in 100 kg of heroin concealed in his vehicle full of nuts coming from the Pakistani side, fully aware of the fact that the driver would be solely responsible for the consignment he is carrying. Pakistan argues that the Indian allegation is ‘unsubstantiated’ and that this is not the first time the Indian authorities have resorted to such a practice. The incident has come days after the two countries decided to reduce barriers to cross-border trade during Pakistan’s Minister of State for Commerce Khurram Dastgir Khan’s visit to India. There is some concern on whether the trade stand-off could also cast a shadow over the second edition of the ‘India Show’ in Lahore from February 14-16, being organised by FICCI to promote bilateral economic relation.
