High drama witnessed outside Enforcement Directorate office
Cops remain on toes as rumours of Bhola's appearance spread

Jalandhar, January 23
Rumours of bringing drug lord Jagdish Bhola from the Nabha jail to Jalandhar by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning resulted in a huge drama at the ED office. The ED was reportedly planning to question Bhola in connection with transactions of thousands of crore with regard to synthetic drug smuggling.

Soon the rumours spread like a wild fire in the city. Soon, mediapersons reached the ED office. But at the end of the day, mediapersons had to leave disappointed as they came to know that the drug lord was not to be brought to Jalandhar as he was produced at the ED office in Chandigarh.

After getting information from the ED office, the Jalandhar commissionerate police had erected barricades outside the office to prevent Bhola's interaction with the media. Interestingly, despite erecting barricades, the police covered the barricades with sheets so that Bhola could not be seen by the media. A police official said barricades were erected to prevent Bhola's interaction with the media as he had already named Cabinet Minister Bikram Majithia in the drug racket. He said they were directed by the top officials to prevent Bhola's interaction with the media.

Notably, the Jalandhar rural police had also brought Bhola on a production warrant and even then the police had not let Bhola face mediapersons. When the rural police was to produce Bhola in a local court, they made several rounds of the court and had to make a backdoor entry as the media was camping outside the court. The top police officials had not even entertained phone calls from mediapersons.

However, sources said the ED may bring Bhola to the city for questioning in connection with transactions worth thousands of crore, which he made with regard to synthetic drug smuggling.

Map-making activity for govt school students tomorrow

Jalandhar, January 23
Realising the importance of use of maps in daily life and syllabus of social sciences, the education department has introduced map filling activity in the activity calendar of social sciences for this session under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. The first map making contest this year will be held at the block level on January 25.

In a major overhaul, intended with introducing students with the best of activities, a number of new activities had already been introduced in the annual calendar like role play on social issues, model making on social sciences, poster making and social sciences quiz. But the map making activity is a new addition this year to inspire a better geographical knowledge among students.

This was especially done with a view that this was one of the parts of the syllabus which generally most of the teachers skip as they have no mastery over it.District Resource Person social sciences, Harsh Loomba, said, “The effort of introducing map filling competition by the department is appreciable. Special training on maps skills will be provided in the coming year seminars of social sciences. Teachers will be trained by experts. Sudents of eighth class of different schools will compete first at the block level and then at the subsequent ones. The first position achievers at block level will compete finally, at district level.”

“It was foreseen by the department that since students will now be competing with other schools, they will give special attention and devote extra time to achieving position at block and district level. Plinth level map making will surely prepare and provide solid foundation for classes to come,” Loomba added.—TNS
