Cut above the rest
The first trends that set the tone for the year come from the spring summer fashion weeks. What actually dots the shelves of retail stores and fashion designer boutiques is more or less a derivation of the same. Taking a cue from what was presented at the major fashion weeks SS 2014, here is what fashion designers forecast for the coming year. But in the end, let fashion be subjective; pick what you think goes with your personality. Nevertheless, take tips from the fashion guides. Riddhi & Siddhi This year hope we give a break to embroideries and rather pick textures. Also Bolero tops in different lengths should hit the shelves. I am in for those with an asymmetric hemline, which adds volume to the main garment and doesn't
overshadow it at the same time. Pre-stitched sarees with textured pallus will enter the fashion scene replacing the heavily embroidered
sarees.
Abdul Haldar Anarkalis will be out this time and will make way for well-fitted clothes that are cut down on volume. The modern Indian woman has to feel comfortable in her skin and she certainly doesn't need flair of Anarkalis to hide her flab. She has to love her body and be independent in every which way, the reason why I have done away with volume and introduced straighter silhouettes in my collection. Pallavi Jaipur While silhouettes might vary from straight to flair to short to long, the colours will remain more or less constant. This will be a year of colours; bold, bright and beautiful. Mix and match colours, wear contrasts, go for colour blocking, pick colourful prints...stack up monochromes for some other time. As for shapes, full sleeves will be the pick of the season instead of strappy ones. Nitin Bal Chauhan Get quirkier with prints this year. I have used skulls as print on an entire collection of t-shirts in collaboration with Westside. But if it is not skull, go for other quirky elements, which stand out. Print should be such that it doesn't go unnoticed. A lot of designers are now working with quirky prints because they realise that it's a fresh component of fashion waiting to be explored. Priyanka Kakkar A lot of fashion followers claim that bling will be out, subtlety will be in. But calculated bling in clothes is here to stay. It renders a formal touch to outfits without going overboard with shimmer. This year, we will see bling in patches, like on collars, cuffs, button strip or just a few stripes. Experiments with hemlines will continue, expect a high-low-trail gaining more popularity. Nachiket Barve We will celebrate sheer this year, at least in summer. The colour pallete of my spring summer collection is inspired from the metallic tones, which will be welcomed by fashion followers. It will be a year of crop tops, boxy as well as bra tops and fluid silhouettes, which promise to create magic when complemented with sheer fabrics.
Paromita Banerjee Skinny jeans will finally disappear from the fashion scene and palzzo pants will be given a grander welcome. Fashion designers are interpreting plazzo pants in different ways and my version of it is a kalidaar plazzo pant. Irrespective of the size, my women clients are ordering them because they hide flab, create an illusion of slimmer look and effortlessly makes one score on the style report card.
Paras & Shalini The evening wear will be revamped; it will witness a revolution in the form of sportswear inspired clothes making interesting substitutes for the usual, couture gowns. And it will be a year of cropped tops. Also a lot of lingerie inspired clothes will make it to the mainstream fashion. These will be delicate, feminine and classy at the same time. ashima@tribunemail.com

When B-town went desi
We take a look at Bollywood stars, who went desi or rustic in films this year Kareena Kapoor Khan and Imran Khan in Gori Tere Pyaar Mein: They both looked good together and gave sincere performances but even going to the lengths of shooting in a remote village could not salvage this boring movie. Shahid Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha in R...Rajkumar: The movie was terrible but it became Shahid's first hit in years. Shahid played a rustic, roadside Romeo and he was very charming and convincing at it, whether he was beating up the bad guys or doing some fantastic dance moves. Sonakshi is desi in every movie. Imran Khan in Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Dobaara: Imran Khan is Mr Goody-Two-Shoes and he is very good at playing urbane, lover-boy type of roles. Full stop. Desi gangster roles are not for him and he was perfectly miscast in the movie. Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in Raam Leela: They both sizzled on screen and how! They mastered the Gujarati dances and made a smoldering Gujarati couple and looked fabulous in the traditional outfits. Definitely, one of the most memorable movies and pairs this year. Tanishaa clears the air Bigg Boss 7 is over with Gauhar taking home the trophy. Now all that is left is to battle the speculations from the show. One of the star criticism takers is Tanishaa Mukherji, one of the contestants in the Bigg Boss house for her tolerating abuses from her apparently 'good friend' Armaan Kohli. Tanishaa, on numerous occasions, has been seen taking undesirable treatment from Armaan and not reacting to it in any befitting manner. Reacting to these rumours, Tanishaa has said, "Armaan is my best friend. He has been very supportive of me, both inside and outside the house. We are close friends, the rest I leave for the people to judge. I don't believe that I was treated like a doormat. If people think that way, it is their opinion and I can't change that. I know who I am and what I stand for and that is what matters to me." She added, "I have complete faith in my mother's upbringing. I have to take the good with the bad. The media will write what they want to; that doesn't mean it's true. They are not inside the house and they are writing on the basis of what they are shown. I am a very affectionate person and I show my affection physically. Be it with Armaan, Andy, Elli or anyone else. Close shave Sonu Sood, who has been riding high after the success of his latest film R...Rajkumar, met with a near fatal accident when the Audi Q5 that he was driving caught fire due to a short circuit. This happened near the Kherwadi signal in Mumbai. Fortunately, Sonu escaped without any injury. Luck shines on Daisy Daisy Shah, who makes her debut opposite Salman Khan in Jai Ho, was a background dancer for Katrina Kaif and Kareena Kapoor in the movies they have done with Salman Khan. She never thought that she would star opposite him but just got lucky! Khoobsoorat Bikaner Sonam Kapoor and Pakistani actor Fawaad Khan are shooting on the streets of Bikaner for the remake of Khoobsoorat directed by Shashank Ghosh. The actor was part of Khuda Kay Liye. Politically incorrect A stage performance by Bollywood actress Evelyn Sharma at the Saifai Mahotsav festival in Uttar Pradesh (UP) this week, has landed her in the midst of a political controversy involving Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son, UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav. The Samajwadi Party leaders are facing flak for actively taking part in this 14-day fest being organised at their hometown Saifai, in Etawah district, while more than 3,500 people continue to live in relief camps set up after the Muzaffarnagar riots three months ago that left more than 63 people dead and over 43,000 homeless in the state. Meanwhile, Evelyn's publicist and spokesperson has sprung up to her defense. "It's unfortunate and disturbing that the Bollywood actress is being dragged into a political controversy. Evelyn was just a performer at the event. Nothing more; nothing less!" "It's disturbing for her, also because this was the first time she performed on stage in front of an audience that big. It was an exciting moment for her and she never imagined it would land her amidst some controversy with political bigwigs talking about it," he added. Wedding bells for Rani? Ever since Rani Mukerji started discreetly seeing YRF boss Aditya Chopra, many have been speculating their wedding. Though both never admitted to being in a relationship, they have been spotted holidaying in various locales. Now the latest buzz is that Rani may finally get hitched next year. The venue reportedly is the scenic Umaid Bhawan palace in Jodhpur. Although everyone is maintaining a tight lip, sources say that the venue was fixed by Rani after she visited the place during Nita Ambani's birthday. The wedding celebrations reportedly will be a lavish affair spread over two weeks and speculations are rife that the actual wedding might happen on February 10. Well, let's wait and watch if Rani does indeed tie the knot this year. Beach to beach We knew that Priyanka Chopra was on a holiday at a beach destination and now we know that she was in the Caribbean with her family, cousins, and close friends. She returned to India to perform in Chennai on New Year's Eve and flew to Goa for a couple of days. |
Look of the year
In a deluge of fads, sometimes an anti-trend is all it takes to stand apart. Even to reach the other end of the scale, there's a need to keep a constant tab.
Sneak into backstage for make-up and push forward to front row for clothes. They don't spell make-up without good skin, the only constant in ever changing trends.
"First of all, skin should be taken good care of. That's the only fashion trend that is here to stay. In 2014, well hydrated skin with tinted moisturisers is going to be in for 2014 as well. Your day make-up is complete with just a hint of base and some colour on the lips," shares Salochna from Salochna's Beauty World. She adds, "When it comes to bridal trends, I'd again advise to look after your skin first. Eye make-up is likely to include a lot of colours. Even with single colour there will be a fine blend of different shades. Think dark shades and loads of mascara." On the international runways, the spring summer 2014 collections were showcased amidst soft berry lips, blue eye shadow, cat eyes and of course glowing skin. A pop of green in eyes could make for a perfect summer look. "Since colours already made their presence felt during the year gone by, they will continue to be the instant ticket to make-over. Nude trend had completely washed off colours but coming season will see coloured mascaras. A lot of people will be coming in for temporary colour solutions to hair, green and blue highlights," opines Richa Aggarwal, Cleopatra. As for the ubiquitous orange, "It might just not be completely out in the coming season. Orange is here to stay for another season at least," opines Shivani, from Headmaster's. At Dolce and Gabbana's Spring Summer 2014 show, hair stylist Guido Palau swept the girls' hair up into a roman crown. Picture a lot of hair accessories, flowers. As for the make-up there were rosy cheeks and lips and perfectly arched brows. Adds Shivani, "Contouring will make its presence felt into mainstream make-up. It'll be more pronounced and well defined. Apart from that, picture a lot of browns smudged together and smoky eyes. There will be no prominent liners. Hair will be all about lots of curls and funky hairdos. Fish plait makes its presence felt onto the head." Undone up-dos and tousled hair, windswept curls, braids, plaits, are the summer's answer for long hair. "If not outright orange then at least shades of coral are here to stay for some more time," predicts Parul Duggal, freelance make-up artist. "Nail art resurfaced with aggression past season. They'll continue to make their presence felt in the coming season as well. But rather than the cluttered floral patterns, there will be geometric shapes along the length or breadth of the nails." Heavy brows are yet another find of the season, thick and full but well arched. She adds, "When it comes to fashion, you never know where the tide turns. Four seasons ago, chipped nail paints were in. As of now, it's only nail art." As of now. manpriya@tribunemail.com

Trained touch
Behind almost every Hollywood hardbody is a great trainer and it's usually Gunnar Peterson… goes the saying! Gunnar Peterson is as much sought after as his celeb clients, if not more. This Beverly Hills-based personal trainer has a client list that boasts of the who's who from different fields. Think Angelina Jolie, Sylvester Stallone and J Lo! Gunnar is also regularly featured in magazines and shows, including Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
Closer home, even our Bollywood celebs' lifeline are their trainers; right from Yasmin Karachiwala behind that perfectly toned figure that Katrina flaunted in Dhoom 3 to Samir Jaura who shaped Farhan Akhtar's athletic look in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Trainer Pradeep Bhatia follows Ranbir Kapoor on his shoots to keep his trainings going without a break! The stature of a personal trainer has grown manifold with a 'good body' on the wish-list of almost everybody. No more are they gym trainers, whose role is limited to one hour that a person spends inside. And it's just not celebs who swear by their trainers! When most in other professions take it easy on the Day 1 of the year, the story is altogether different for this tribe of professionals. With one large chunk of the population taking a vow to be 'fitter' in the beginning of the year, trainers are a busy lot. For Shriya, a corporate professional, a day begins and ends with her trainer. Right from what to eat, variable workout routine to confessing her slip from the totally charted out routine - her trainer is a significant part of each day. Now that makes a trainer's life pretty engaging. Aerobics and fitness trainer Vishal Thukral is happy to shoulder the growing responsibility and work that will come his way in 2014. "The youngsters today are an aware lot with the best of resources at hand. They are earning well and happy to spend a major chunk on getting as well as maintaining a good body," says Vishal, admitting that the role of a fitness trainer has today moved much beyond the gym. Lifestyle and weight management consultant Sachin Kalra adds the responsibility of being a motivator to a trainer's profile. "Keeping fit has become a fashion statement today but most people know little on the subject; that's when people like me walk in," says Sachin. With the growing stress of modern living, trainers today take into account mental fitness as well. "A healthy state of mind is as much desired today as a healthy body," adds Sachin. So if you were dilly-dallying, let Personal Trainer Awareness Day be the time to make the most of resources available to keep fit. Let's go by the motto of the day, 'Let the healthier you shine through!' mona@tribunemail.com
Fitness first * Fitness starts from the kitchen, eat right. * Keep your dinner light and early, at least two hours before you hit the bed. *
Make meditation a part of daily routine * Keep the three Ws in mind - when to eat, what to eat and why to eat. —Sachin Kalra & Vishal Thukral

CELEB POINT Divya Dutta Tum chale jaoge to sochenge...humne kya khoya humne kya paya....that's what I would say for 2013. Yes, those lines remind me of Farooq Sheikh. The nicest person and the most sensitive actor. Adieu Farooq saab. The goodwill he had was to be seen with the number of people at his ceremonies. We will remember you for your awesome work and your smiling face. And that's how I'd like to look back at 2013. Smiling, yet with a pinch of salt. Professionally it was a great year for me. Two biggest hits and nominations for Special 26, Gippy and of course Bhaag Milkha Bhaag! Truly special and the love that I received from you all is unparalleled. Personally lots of lessons learnt. I realised being sensitive is great for me as an actor but otherwise I end up hurting myself expecting from people I love and think that they love me too. Especially at work, I realised long-term working relationships do not necessarily amount to strong bonds. Most of them care for you because you work for them and then that care passes on to the next person they work with. They will be cordial but they will give you the warmth and excessive love when they need you. It hurts, yes. I learnt it the hard way that you are sometimes treated for what you have to offer, rather than who you are. I closed those emotional chapters. Yes, I learnt to accept that everyone is not your friend, but the ones who are, never let them go. I am lucky to have some very good friends. But that doesn't mean I change my inherent nature. I love to love. But now who it shall go to, I'll be clear about. Thank you 2013 for teaching me that, for valuing myself, for keeping that being inside me happy first. It's liberating yet hurting to close chapters. I closed a few books this year to pick up new ones from the shelf...to unfold newness. New beginnings, new attitude. Of course, I will make mistakes but the wisdom would be not to repeat them. So adieu 2013. I look forward to you dear 2014. Hope you are good to all of us. Hope is what we start with. As far as resolutions are concerned, if we could be alert and self disciplined citizens, I think that would be a great step. Personally, let's just get those cheers and smiles back. As Farhan Akhtar once told me, "Life is simple, remove the complications." So true, let's try doing that. As for me, I heard a beautiful thing. Do what you fear. Face it. Confront it. Overcome it. Make it unimportant and non- existent. And let's discover goodness in everyone. As one of Jagjitji's song says..."OK brahmin ne kaha hai ye saal acha hai..." Happy 2014. (Dutta is a Bollywood actor) |

it’s rocking From being rated as number 49 on the Billboard Hot 100, Timber has now peaked its position to number two in only a couple of months. Sung by American rapper Pitbull, featuring recording artiste Kesha, the song was released as the lead single from Pitbull's EP, Meltdown. The song has been produced by Dr Luke, Cirkut, and Sermstyle, with additional production by Nick Seeley and it interpolates San Francisco Bay (1979) by Danish harmonica player, Lee Oskar. It also features harmonica player Paul Harrington of Rockwall, Texas, who plays through the entire song. He was told to emulate harmonica player, Lee Oskar of the band War. While the song already claimed its territory as one of the top three songs in almost all the music charts, let's see what Chandigarh folks have to say about it. Party feel It's a song that you want to play while the party is at its peak and everybody around is dancing. This song has a certain kind of energy to it and that is the most interesting part of the song. I like it! Rustam Singh, student, Amity University Pop & peppy The song is brilliant. I like the music and more than that, I like the video. Though the song has a typical Pitbull feel to it, it also has a very trippy mix of Kesha's musicality, which is in every way pop and peppy. Amarinder Singh Mann, freelance graphic designer Poor content I like the song, but it's more of the kind that will appeal to those who fancy clubbing. I, very honestly, like the vibe of the song which makes me dance, but the content of the song is not as good as it could have been. Abhinav Sharma, musician — As told to Amarjot Kaur |

Bigg confession!
Post his exit from the reality show Big Boss, Ajaz Khan says that his love for Gauahar Khan was mere acting! "I had a triangle love story (Gauahar-Kushal-Ajaz) right in front of me. Plus there were so many cameras. I would have looked bad alone. So, I made a film in the Bigg Boss house that turned out to be a hit," confesses the actor. Does this mean he never fell for Gauahar? "I wasn't in love; I just liked her. If you're locked in a house with a beautiful girl you will naturally be attracted to her," Ajaz quips. Does it mean he did everything for the camera? "Of course, I am an actor and whatever I do will be for the camera. I entered the house for the camera and my main aim was to show that I am an entertainer. I neither want to be a Gandhi nor Bhagat Singh. I just want to be an actor, a superstar in fact. I want to take our cinema to the next level," he observes. A rocking affair Producer Nikhil Sinha and Suhana Sinha played perfect hosts on the occasion of completion of two years of Devon Ke Dev Mahadev and the launch of the new show Hatim on Life OK. Riding high Gautam Rode is enjoying the success of his show Saraswatichandra. He feels good ratings boost the morale of the team on the show, as that is an indication of what the audience wants. The chemistry of Saras and Kumud is perhaps what the viewers love about the show. Blushing bride Aamna Sharif got married to her fiancé Amit Kapoor in a grand ceremony recently. She hosted a lavish sangeet, cocktail, mehandi, wedding and reception; many celebrities from Bollywood and television also attended the wedding. The bride looked ravishing and couldn't keep the smile off her face. That’s not done! Reality TV star Kris Jenner is reportedly furious with Khloe Kardashian for revealing that she wanted her to get nose surgery. The 29-year-old socialite had recently told a magazine that Jenner wanted her to get a nose job at the age of nine and "makeup artists" too had suggested her for the same. Following her daughter's remarks, Jenner is furious about the issue. "Jenner was absolutely blindsided by the nose job comments her daughter made in the interview. She wasn't given a heads up when it was even discussed! Kris has been getting heavily criticised on social media. —PTI Controversy calling Gauahar Khan might have won the Bigg Boss 7 trophy, but she is plagued by allegations that it was pre-determined. People are speculating that the show was rigged, but the makers deny the same. Moreover, her love for Kushal too is being questioned as people wonder if it is real. She's claims she loves him and now they will take each day at a time.
