MC gets tough on violators

The Mohali Municipal Corporation has decided to act tough against encroachers. The civic body will levy a fine of Rs 500 per day on a person for encroaching upon the government land.

Tableau of Rock Garden on Rajpath
Chandigarh, December 12
Tableau of City Beautiful will be rolling out on the Rajpath in New Delhi during the Republic Day parade. The theme for the tableau will be Rock Garden. This was confirmed by the Ministry of Defence today. It would be for the first time that the tableau of Rock Garden will be displayed during the Republic Day parade.

The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) today announced that 15 days' time would be given to residents to file their suggestions and objections to multi-year tariff (MYT) and demand side management (DSM).

Local issues take backseat

Where there's politics, there's mudslinging. Issues related to lal dora and building bylaws have taken a backseat, with candidates bringing up corruption, inflation and railgate as their poll plank. Former railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal has been in news, but for bad reasons. The elections are scheduled for December 15. The elections are not contested on party symbols, but the presence of the parties is quite evident.

24-hr water supply for 3 colonies

Three city colonies will get a 24-hour water supply. The Municipal Corporation will construct water tanks in the colonies.The civic body has earmarked a site at Mauli Jagran where a water tank will be constructed.The project will benefit over 25,000 residents.

Date for availing rebate extended
Mohali, December 12
The date for availing a 10 per cent discount on property tax has been extended to December 31. No fine would be imposed on payments received till January 31, next year. This was stated by the Commissioner of the corporation, Uma Shankar Gupta, here today.

Councillor demands vigilance inquiry

Upset over the use of substandard construction material, an MC councillor today demanded a vigilance inquiry and submitted a letter to the UT Adviser, who is also holding the charge of the Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO). It is for the first time that a Congress councillor, Mukesh Bassi, demanded a vigilance inquiry into the functioning of the civic body.

Speaking out
A day after the Supreme Court restored the Constitutional validity of Section 377 of the IPC, under which homosexual act is a criminal offence punishable with life term, Chandigarh Tribune spoke to a cross-section of people on the issue. Respondents gave a mixed response when asked whether the Parliament should push for an amendment in Section 377 of the IPC and legitimise gay sex or gay marriages. However, there were many youths who refrained from talking about the issue.

Chandigarh: The annual sports fest of Manav Mangal High School, Sector 21, was organised with full verve and enthusiasm. The racing events for pre-primary classes was the highlight of the event as tiny tots of nursery to Class II performed with full energy. Students of Classes III to VI were in their best of sporting spirits, be it lemon and spoon race for Class III, hurdle race for Class V and basket ball dribble race for Class VI.

The Panchkula police have arrested a fraudster and a fake doctor, Sandeep Sharma. Sharma was allegedly involved in a multi-crore scam and also ran a hospital in Panchkula without holdding a professional degree.

5 booked for harassing woman colleague
Mohali, December 12
On the complaint of a woman colleague, the local police have registered a case against five employees of a company. The five accused have been booked on the charges of outraging modesty, teasing and criminal intimidation.

Youths snatch purse
Chandigarh, December 12
Two women were targeted by snatchers in different parts of of the city on Wednesday evening. Suparna Goyal, a resident of Sector 38, reported to the police that motorcycle-borne youths sped away after snatching her purse containing Rs 1,500 and two mobile phones near Sector 38.
