His name is Bond, Jatt James Bond…
As director Rohit Jugraj shouts light, camera, action…actor Gippy Grewal gets into a fight sequence, revealing that every Jatt has a Bond within…And pretty lass Zarine Khan fills up the gaps
He runs along with camera trolley, calling shots,
sending a war cry one time too many….Cut, he shouts. Director Rohit Jugraj is
a transformed person on the sets. Standing behind the camera or appearing before
it to explain the scenes is not his style. He runs with his lead actor Gippy
Grewal in all the fight sequences, he jumps around like one of the men in this
sequence. He does everything his artistes do, only he wouldn't be captured in
camera. The shooting for Jatt James Bond is underway in a village in
Punjab with a 'must look out for' star cast, Gippy Grewal and Zarine Khan, the
actress who danced to Character Dhila song, the one who shares an uncanny
resemblance with Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif. Jatt James Bond will
be shot in the villages of Punjab and the film is written by Jas Grewal and
Jatinder Lall. In the middle of the shoot, the cast halts to chat up. Director's
cut
Rohit was skeptical when he took up the project; it was the script,
however, that got him on board. "The story is pretty interesting. JJB is a
like a commercial entertainer. It is a story of three boys from a village and
how they bond with one another while fighting the hurdles in life," says
Jugraj. Not going by the let-it-be attitude on his sets, Rohit makes sure the
entire cast is on the sets on time. He laughs, "I have the entire unit
lined up at the given time. I make sure that I push my limits. That way the
actors also enjoy working." Rohit likes to read, and not for the sake of
reading, he understands and decodes every word of it. Wonder what makes him
retain the over-hyped word 'Jatt'. "I found it pretty noble when I heard it
for the first time. I had only known of Jatt & Juliet, later I came
to know there are so many movies that used Jatt. However, when you see the film,
you will understand the relevance of the title," shares the director. So,
this one isn't a comedy, we hope. Jugraj tries to do his bit of explanation.
"Comedy for the sake of comedy is passé. The audiences and filmmakers are
smarter now. Jatt James Bond doesn't have out of the place punches. It
has situations. In fact, the tragic ones, and how the characters solve it in as
light hearted manner. I am not making any James Bond Daniel Craig movie; it is a
Punjabi film with full entertainment." From the title to the cast, the
one name that raises curiosity—Bollywood actress Zarine Khan. Jugraj is not
politically correct, he takes no time to prepare this answer. "I wanted a
face that hasn't been used in Punjabi films before. She looks like a pretty
Punjaban in suit and parandi." Bhajji to Bond
The
Bhajji is out of problem, and now this Jatt has assumed the role of James Bond.
Singer-actor Gippy Grewal in his white tracks jumps the wall, runs through the
lanes for the action sequence. "This is going to be a totally different
film, even when it carries the name Jatt, it has loads of material never watched
before," shares Gippy. Writers' note
Jas
Grewal and Jatinder Lall have written the story, screenplay and dialogues of the
film. Jas, who has already written dialogues for Ishq Garaari, finds
every film can be made differently if it is written and unexecuted similarly. Jatt
James Bond is not a comedy film, which clearly means it has other elements
of entertainment." Pretty much Punjaban
All
it took was a narration and a deep thought and of course the up and rising
scenario of Punjabi film industry for actress Zarine Khan to say yes to Jatt
James Bond. From romancing Salman Khan on screen to playing a school teacher
in the Punjabi film, there seems to be a long story in this path. "Not
really," she laughs beautifully. "I have been getting a lot of offers
to work in a Punjabi film, and then heard about this film, it had a great story
and I was working opposite Gippy Grewal, what better way to debut in Punjabi
films," says Zarine. She slips into a Punjabi suit and the accent for her
role. "It is pretty interesting, I am doing this for the first time and I
hope this will turn out to be great. Most of my friends are Punjabi so I
understand the language." She is excited about shooting in Punjab and with
a Punjabi crew. "I have heard that Punjbai films are doing great. The
entire look of the film is so Bollywood like," she adds puckishly! Zarine
wants to do films down south and as many languages as she can. "People
generally say that actors and actresses who don't get work in Bollywood, move to
south or go elsewhere. As an I actor I feel it's okay to explore all languages
and genres." jasmine@tribunemail.com |

Alter-native ways
From being a teacher to the multi-faceted artiste, Tom Alter's life makes for an inspiring story
Years ago Tom Alter was busy teaching children in
Jagadhri when he saw superstar Rajesh Khanna on screen. That altered the course
of his life. He got himself a degree from Film and Television Institute of
India, Pune, entered the world of cinema and been there close to four decades
hence! The quintessential gora aadmi on Indian screen, the multifaceted
man — an actor, theatre person and writer — on Wednesday comes to Chandigarh
to interact with the students of Chitkara International School. Alter shares his
take on his monumental journey that earned him honours and awards, including the
prestigious Padma Shri. Starting with his journey in cinema, Alter has some
roles close to his heart from some 300 plus movies he has worked in. His role in
Chameli Memsaab, an Assamese film, tops his favourite list. Playing Lord
Mountbatten in Sardar comes a close second. Playing a teacher in Ocean
of an Old Man closes the top three list. But this not where Alter is going
to stop.
Game plan
Tom Alter was at Chitkara International School for Change the Game session. A learning initiative where the school invites prominent educationists, leaders, entrepreneurs, actors and professionals who have made a mark in their respective fields, this session allows students to interact with these prominent personalities and know how they have dared to fulfil their dreams. If Tom Alter's talk left students motivated, he was impressed by students too. "It was something that I haven't come across so far. Some 20 students played different roles the likes of Kiran Bedi leaving me impressed. From different states of the region, these students have tremendous potential," says Alter who feels acting makes a rewarding career today.
He has taken the changes in the film industry in his stride and
continues to work, "Cinema is a part of the larger world. The world is
changing, cinema is also changing along with everything else. Just like the
world, some changes are good, others are bad. What works for an artiste is to go
along with flow." He has inspired many and among his current favourites
Irrfan Khan tops the chart. "I quite like Aamir Khan and Ranbir Kapoor
too," says the actor. Priyanka Chopra takes the laurels of being one good
female actor among the new in Alter’s eyes. Ask him what does it take to be
a good actor and he says, "You have to be talented and lucky. While the
first can be refined, the makings of an ctor has to be in you to begin
with." India remains to be home for Alter, born to American parents,
"Home is India, I was born here," says the actor who is busy pursuing
theatres, film, serials and writing! mona@tribunemail.com |
Short & sweet
Sitting through a documentary is not everyone's cup of tea, which goes without saying that making one isn't so either. Jung Bahadur Atwal, who is working as a producer at the Centre for Advanced Media Studies at Punjabi University and also the editor and technical advisor on the series of documentaries being made by the University on various poets, the first one being on Mohan Bhandari, would want to ideally create an atmosphere congenial for watching documentaries. He laughs, "How many people do ideally watch a documentary, either we have to keep a screening for special audience or show it to the university students, willingly not many would see it." Jung Bahadur, who has been associated with documentary making for a pretty long time, wants people to know that there are works which can entertain as well. "It is purely up to the maker to select a topic for documentary. I like to make on social issues like female feticide and child labour. And there are others that are entertaining like Malegaon Ka Superhero. Documentary can be infotatining as well," shares Jung Bahadur. Here it is not the finance, which is a hurdle. "Unlike what we see in foreign countries, the documentaries are not released likewise in India. We do not have a huge audience for them, but the scenario is changing, it might take a longer time than expected." This young lad from Jalandhar is always looking for subjects that can be captured in a short film. Recently, he has a short film on Guru Tegh Bahadur. "Life in general and so many aspects related to it can be an ideal subject for a short movie. It is about how one says everything in few words." |

Chatter box
Buzz is that Sargun Mehta who recently came on board as Ganga in Balika Vadhu might not be seen on the show for long. She is getting married to her beau Ravi Dubey on December 7 and that might put a full stop to her
role. On cloud nine
Sharad Kelkar is enjoying compliments for his role in Ram Leela these days. But that's not the only reason behind his happiness. His wife is six months pregnant and the couple is awaiting their bundle of joy. He is also looking forward to his Marathi movie releasing in January with Ritesh
Deshmukh. This time, it’s silver screen
Smriti Irani might not be acting in serials but will soon be seen in a Bollywood film called Mere Apne. For her film debut, she will be cast opposite Rishi Kapoor and play Abhishek Bachchan's mother. She has shot the first schedule. A new chapter begins
Ekta Kapoor is back on television with a brand new show Ye Hai Mohobbatein on Star Plus. The show has been adapted from Manju Kapur's book Custody. She talks to us explaining why she chose to adapt a book, the delay in the project and more. Why did you choose to adapt a book into a TV show? When I read Custody, I knew I wanted to make a show based on the story of the book. But it would have been unethical to use the plot without buying it. So I met Manju and told her there were constraints of TV and there will be some changes in the story. Every character she etched out was beautiful, which is why I decided to make this story very TV friendly. She only requested that we don't make Raman's first wife Shagun look negative, who leaves her husband and has an affair with his boss. I have left the interpretation to the audiences. What will be the USP of the show? We have a South Indian family living in Delhi and for the first time on Indian TV, we will explore neighbours who are today extended families for many. Cezzane Khan was supposed to star in the show but he opted out. Why? I don't want to go into the details. The dates didn't work out and the show also kept getting pushed and he got some other projects. During winter, TV viewing in the north drastically reduces. How confident are you about the late night 11 pm slot for this show? I was told that viewers in North India might not watch TV due to weather constraints. But I thought that if the show is different and interesting, it will do well. Calling it quits
Buzz is that Rithvik Dhanjani and Asha Negi might be quitting Pavitra Rishta soon. Before the show took a leap, there were many stories doping the rounds but Ekta Kapoor convinced them to stay on. Now that the leap has occurred, the story is still focused on Ankita Lokhande and Naren, so other characters don't have much to do. Taking the lead
Mohit Malik aka Rehan of Channel V's show Suvreen Guggal - Topper of the Year, will be seen as Samrat in Spellbound's new show Doli Armaano Ki on Zee. Mohit is glad to get a variety in his roles as after playing a charming guy, he will now essay the role of a workaholic. Lost in love & dance
Model Bruna Abdullah, who was recently seen in Grand Masti is thrilled about being a part of the dance reality show, Nach Baliye 6. She is glad that people like her chemistry with her boyfriend Omar Farooque.

Stroke of genius
Amarjot Kaur For those who aim for the stars, sky is the limit. Chahat Arora, a student of Vivek High School, who is currently in grade XI and is pursuing commerce, is a powerhouse of talent. She is confident and positive, the qualities that make her stand out from the rest. On November 8, Chahat participated in the All-India National Swimming competition held at Sonipat, where she made a new national record as she completed 50 meters breast stroke in 36.83 seconds and bagged a gold medal. "I aspire to become an Olympian and be an inspiration for others," she says. Chahat is being trained at the Panjab University under the aegis of Gurcharan Singh, who she credits her accomplishment to. Motivational factor
"My parents, especially my mother, support me and she has made me who I am today. She is an immense source of motivation for me because she keeps telling me about my weaknesses and how can I possibly overcome them," says
Chahat. "Also, I am impressed by all the good swimmers and this makes me work harder," she adds. Feathers in the cap
Like every sports player, Chahat too has to do the balancing act when it comes to managing sports and studies, but she gives due credit to her family and teachers for bringing out the best in her. "I started swimming when I was four and at the age of six, I started participating in various swimming competitions. I was always the best swimmer in my age group, which helped me perform better each time. I got my first medal at the nationals when I was in Grade VI and won many medals in nationals thereafter. However, I think that the biggest accomplishment so far, was this year when I broke the national games swimming record," she shares. "Also, I secured silver medals in 100 meters breast stroke and 50 meters free style and a bronze medal in 200 meters breast stroke. Now, I am looking forward to participating in my school national games," says she. Flipside of being an achiever
The biggest problem that Chahat faces is to juggle with her studies and sports. "I am mostly out of station for swimming competitions, because of which I lose out on my studies. However, my friends, parents and teachers support me a lot," explains Chahat while adding, "Even my best friend is a football player and we both keep motivating each other. Being an achiever is not easy as it takes a lot effort and hard work." Words of
wisdom
Chahat feels that her life is nothing without sports. "I am so hyperactive that sitting at home and doing what most of the teens do everyday is not my cup of tea. I cannot just sit idle and that irritates me," she says. "I feel that being down to earth with a positive attitude and a desire to perform can help you achieve anything you want. So don't wait for the right moment, make the moment right!" she
smiles. amarjot@tribunemail.com

A new beginning
Divya Dutta This is a very significant week. Something new is happening in our lives. My brother is getting married. My little kid bro. For me, he always will be. From the time I held him in my arms, not letting anyone touch him....he was mine....just mine. My mom's precious gift to me. Time's just flown by. He took the place of an elder brother, caring, pampering, doing things his own silent way. He accompanied me to Goa for the film festival. We both went out together after a long time. I soaked in each moment, hand in hand singing and walking on the sand, doing masti and during the event, he stood with me like a shield, taking care of anything I need. The beautiful thing about him is that I've never had to ask for anything. He just knew. Those beautiful surprises, those warm moments make this sibling bonding a special one. Sometimes he's my little bro but most times, he's my security comfort zone. It's busy preparation days. Shaadiwala ghar. Rahul and I rarely get to sit together except talking about things to be done. But there's this beautiful feeling. However busy he is, his reassuring presence is always around. I am so happy, my leading hypnotherapist bro is starting a new chapter in his life. Yes, my little bro will be now someone else's too. But this time I am ready to extend this beautiful bond with another sweet extension in his life...welcoming the lovely addition in our cozy house....New beginnings, new arrivals, new happenings, new excitements. Some nervousness, some anxiety too. But all under the secure shadows of the love and bonding we share...where words are not important to express. Where needs are fulfilled before you ask. I celebrate that beautiful bond and dear Rahul, a very happy married life... (Dutta is a Bollywood actress) |

Pet theory
Planet Pets, the one-stop-shop for pet animals, provides customised cuts for specific breeds
Dogs might not turn a house into home but they certainly make the idea of home sound sweet. For dog lovers, pets find a place in the hearts apart from home. For the unconditional love and loyalty, all that you need to give in return is proper training, grooming and maintenance. "Most of the pet outlets here are not one- stop-shops. Most of the times, they only stock pet products but not the proper knowledge," Sikander Singh, the proprietor at the launch of Planet Pets at Manimajra, rues and claims in the same sentence. "We will not just be selling pet products but providing all sorts of services. During my travels abroad, I witnessed the smooth functioning of one-stop-shops. So I wanted to replicate the concept here." The shop houses a clinic, a mini hospital and also a dog hostel. He adds, "We have a professional groomer and we will also be providing customised cuts for specific breeds. "For the uninitiated, there are pet cuts and show cuts. Pet cuts are popular these days, as they can give the looks of several cartoon characters. While the other popular styles are more on the professional front and are known as show cuts. "My motive is to spread awareness about the need for overall upkeep of pets and for the same, I'll also be conducting seminars and checkup camps for dogs and cats every month," shares the owner, who claims to have introduced Rottweilers in India. "I got this breed in '94 in India and keep travelling all across to be able to implement the new concepts and also introduce new breeds here." Love for dogs goes back to his childhood days and he is one of the few to have turned their passion into profession. He laughs, "My folks didn't encourage me with this but I still went ahead because this is a passion." manpriya@tribunemail.com

Round one for Kangana
Ashima Batish Not that it is a contest, but when you pit two of the best dressed actresses of Bollywood against each other, it's not easy to score them for their fashion quotient. Dressed to the nines at a recent awards function, Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut made style statements that would be the point of reference for fashion critics for times to come. Here we elaborate on who wore what, and how they outdid each other. Rest, it's for you to score them. Hair to stay: Kangana tied her hair in a nice bun, while Priyanka's side swept her curls. The former's bun did justice to her plain nude look, as the focus shifted to her face. Priyanka's hairstyle complemented her embellished dress but we wish she kept it a little less dramatic. Dress material: Kangana's salmon pink gown with a plunging neckline added to her international look. Fuss-free, with minimal flair towards the hemline and just the right bit of draping, her gown looked divine. On the other hand, Priyanka looked stunning in a Monisha Jaising's creation. The sheer neckline in sweetheart shape, stonework and sequins, a high thigh slit, just everything was in place. The two stood equal on the style-o-meter. Make-up: Kangana kept it so simple, so nude and yet so sexy. You just couldn't make out, except for the light pink blush on her cheeks, if she was wearing any make-up. Priyanka's mascara-laden lashes and smoky eyes completed the look for her. Just a tinge of red on her lips made her make-up look so perfect with the red gown. It's a deuce here as well. Accessory point: That was where Kangana took the lead. She was not wearing any accessories, not even earrings. Just a grey Louis Vuitton bag and she scored the match point. Priyanka's earrings were disappointing. You don't expect someone to sport chandeliers with a high-slit, western silhouettes! And she didn't need any in the first place, her gown had enough stones already. Her golden Jimmy Choo pumps, deserve a mention and they looked, as always, striking. Kangana wins! |

Dhoom once more
They rocked it again with Dhoom 3 title track and this time around, they are even sleeker, swankier, and fancier. It's the most anticipated film of the year and the song already establishes its territory. Sung by Aditi Singh Sharma, the music of the song has been given by Pritam and the song has been written by Sameer Anjaan. We ask the city folks about their opinion of the song… Groovy movesThe thing about the song is that both music and lyrics are somewhat repetitive and that perhaps is the only thing that goes against the song. However Katrina's looks and moves make up for all the flaws. Karthik Kaushal, student International feel
I like the song. It's energetic and I love the beats. Also, I like the way Katrina looks in the song and the way she dances. Though it's an Indian song, but I like the way the makers have given it an international look. Isha Verma, student Killer looks
It's a nice song, but I'd rather call it a theme because they keep giving
a new rendition to the original song and there's nothing much new to look forward to, except the dhoom girls. Katrina, like always, looks ravishing in the song! Shantnu Chaudhary, student — As told to Amarjot Kaur
