Raheel Sharif is new Pak army chief
Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani will succeed Iftikhar Chaudhry as Chief Justice
Islamabad, November 27
In emerging signs of civilian authority taking roots in a largely military-dominated power structure in Pakistan since democratic elections six months back, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today appointed Lieutenant General Raheel Sharif (57) as the country's new army chief. The appointment of Lt General Sharif (no relation with the PM's family) came as a surprise as he was perceived third in seniority.
