Man strangles wife to death
Ludhiana, October 30
The Sadar police has arrested a 25-year-old man for allegedly strangling his wife and spreading the word that she committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan. The incident came to light when the sarpanch of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar near the Dhandra road informed the police that a woman, Sarabjit, had committed suicide at her in- laws' house.

GLADA sells 5 commercial sites for Rs 4.22 crore
Ludhiana, October 30
The Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) today sold five commercial sites in the Dugri Urban Estate, Phase III, netting Rs 4,22,53,000 in the process against the reserve price of Rs 4.12 crore for the sites.

Ludhiana, October 30
The district Transport Department today netted Rs 24.17 lakh through an auction of vanity numbers at Bachat Bhawan here. A large number of bidders turned up for the auction of the series PB 10 DS along with their supporters.

7 samples of eatables fail purity test
Ludhiana, October 30
Seven samples of eatables, which were collected this month by a team of the Health Department, have failed the purity test. The District Health Officer, Dr Abnash Kumar, said, "A sample of chamcham collected from Nath Di Hatti, Chandigarh Road, Samrala, was found containing non-permitted synthetic colour.

16 more test positive for dengue
Ludhiana, October 30
Sixteen more patients tested positive for dengue here today. The patients are under treatment at various hospitals in the city. Patients from Ludhiana city who tested positive for dengue belong to Janak Puri, Rahon Road, Giaspura, Islam Gunj, Heera Nagar, Kalai Sarak, Focal Point, Sherpur, Daba, Dhandari and Jodhewal.

Shirmonai Akali Dal (Badal) legislator from Sahnewal and Cabinet Minister (PWD) Sharanjit Singh Dhillon is under fire from a panchayat union which has charged him with patronising corrupt and anti-social elements, murdering democratic values and intimidating panches and sarpanches of his own party for personal and political reasons.

YAD activists gift onions to Tewari

Showing the concern over sky-rocketing prices of onions, activists of Youth Akali Dal (YAD) threw onions at Manish Tiwari's house here today. Akali workers, led by Meetpal Singh Dugri, National vice-president of YAD and Senior Akali leader, Ravinderpal Singh Mikku, visited the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Manish Tiwari's residence to present him onions as a Diwali gift.

Gold coins will not be available in plenty this Dhanteras and Diwali as a ban has been imposed on the import of gold coins and medallions and the government has asked the banks to strictly follow the guidelines restricting the inward shipments of the yellow metal.

The activists of the local unit of the Youth Congress today held a protest against the alleged exploitation of people by private laboratory operators. The protesting activists alleged that the private laboratory operators had been exploiting patients by charging exorbitent fees for tests conducted by them.

Admissions to associate schools barred

The admissions to the associate schools, which are being run on an area of 200 sq yards or less in Punjab, will not be allowed from the next academic session starting from March, 2014. Around 233 schools have not fulfiled the norms of Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) and the latter have served these schools 15 days notice to put objections, if any.

Resentment prevailed among devotees after miscreants vandalised the streetlights installed outside Saint Lappeshah Dargah located in the old city area of Jagraon last night. The incident came to light this morning when some nearby residents saw broken streetlights outside the shrine. As soon as the news broke out, a large number of people assembled outside the shrine.

Festivities turn sour for Kalakh family

Festivities turned sour for a local peasant family when their only son, who was expected to come home over a week ago, died a day before his scheduled arrival here. His body was brought home and cremated today. The deceased, Narinder Singh Cheema, was the only son of Jagjit Singh and Kuldeep Kaur and was settled in Dubai.

Rs 30-cr grant cleared for city sewerage, says Tewari

The Union Urban Development Ministry has released Rs 30.17 crore of the Additional Central Assistance for providing sewerage and a sewage treatment plant in Ludhiana under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

The ministerial staff today staged a protest and burnt an effigy of the state government at the Mini-Secretariat here today. The agitated staff said the government was imposing all cost-cutting measures on the employees of the state government while those in power were enjoying all perks.

AAP opposes newly imposed taxes

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today staged a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner's office against newly imposed taxes by the state government. Volunteers of the AAP gathered to protest against property tax, fee for regularisation of colonies, enhanced transport fees and taxes, increased electricity rates or taking up advance securities, VAT refund, e-trip and other new taxes.

120 sacks of poppy husk seized

The city police seized around 120 sacks of poppy husk from an abandoned truck near the Army Cantonment at Dholewal here this evening. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP- II) Bhupinder Singh Sidhu confirmed the development. He said the contraband was hidden under the heaps of red chillies.

Two motorcycle-borne persons robbed a youth of his mobile phone near Aarti Chowk. The local police has initiated probe into a murder of a woman of Lohara village, whose blood-stained body was found buried under wheat chaff in her niece's house at Bhutta village near here where she had been staying for over a fortnight.
