Woman dies in hit-and-run
: A woman identified as Baljinder Kaur of Rajender Nagar died on the spot after being hit by an unidentified car near Jaswali bus stand here on Monday night. Station House Officer (SHO) Ajaib Singh Baath said a speeding car hit the victim when she was crossing the road near the bus stand. The driver is still to be nabbed. The body of the victim has been sent to the local civil hospital for a postmortem. A case has been registered.

Nawanshahr
Ropar-Phagwara road to be widened: An 82 km stretch of Ropar-Nawanshahr-Banga-Phagwara road will be widened at a cost of Rs 1,482 crore. After the project is completed, the road will have four lanes. Tenders are to be invited for the project by December 10. Deputy Commissioner Anindita Mitra said this while presiding over a meeting held to fix the prices of land to be acquired.

Teachers won’t be paid for October
: Over 20,500 teachers and 1,100 non-teaching staff working under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Rashtriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhiyan (RMSA) in the state won’t get salaries for the month of October due to the pen-down strike of the non-teaching staff. They have been on an indefinite strike since October 21 and demand regular pay scales similar to those of SSA and RMSA teachers. Sher Singh, District Education Officer (DEO), Elementary, Sangrur, who also deals with the SSA in the district, admitted that the pen-down strike had adversely affected the functioning of SSA. He confirmed the teachers wouldn't be paid for October.

CTU staff defer rally: Following officials' assurance, the CTU workers Union postponed its October 31 rally. The officials of the Chandigarh Administration assured the workers of addressing their problems. The officials said new buses would be purchased soon. In a meeting between UT Adviser KK Sharma and the CTU, issues pertaining to the purchase of new buses, fresh recruitments and implementation of 1992 notification were discussed. — TNS
