A ray of hope for players
Chandigarh, October 29 The players were earlier selected, but were dropped as they were allegedly declared overage after the ossification test conducted by a panel of doctors at Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16. Following the non-selection of their wards, their parents filed a petition against the UT sports department alleging favouritism. After the head of the medical board admitted that the ossification test, conducted to ascertain the age of players, might not be completely authenticated, the case was registered. “We have produced age proofs attested by the Government of India. The head of the medical board has himself accepted in writing that the test conducted to determine the age of a player may or may not yield accurate results. Furthermore, the court has also directed the administration to probe into the matter and ensure the admission of the players, as per law, within a period of a month. We are geared up with all the evidences,” said AS Jattana, an advocate. According to sources, the department has been unsuccessful in filling up the vacant seats of both the academies for the past two years. Another blast from the past If all the controversies were not enough to expose the lethargic approach of the UT Sports department, another incident has also come to light which has raised a question on the selection procedure of the department. In 2011, a hockey player, Jaswinder, from Punjab was selected, but was later dropped as during a medical check up, doctors found a small stone in his pancreas. As per the ossification test, he was 11-years-old then. The same player was selected in 2012, but was declared overage by the officials of the UT Sports department and not by doctors. The department did not allegedly consider the previous year’s medical reports for the selection of the player. Not giving up to the odds, Jaswinder, is currently enrolled in the Surjit Hockey Academy. He took a medical certificate from Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, on August 8, 2012 and is continuing with his passion. |
