Rs 15 lakh looted from ATM

An unidentified face-covered person looted Rs 15 lakh by breaking open the ATM of Punjab National Bank, branch of Naushehra Pannuan village, 16 km from here, during the early hours today.

Prisoner escapes from Civil Hospital, cops suspended
Gurdaspur, September 24
Kamaljit Singh, who had been convicted in two criminal cases and was an under trail in another 10 cases, escaped after pulling wool over the eyes of as many as four police personal guarding him in the Civil Hospital here today.

Heavy rain causes inconvenience
Phagwara, September 24
Phagwara town and its surroundings experienced heavy rain followed by hail storms this afternoon. The rain which continued for more than one hour lowered down the weather temperature, providing relief from the humidity.

Rs 15 lakh looted from ATM

Tarn Taran, September 24
An unidentified face-covered person looted Rs 15 lakh by breaking open the ATM of Punjab National Bank, branch of Naushehra Pannuan village, 16 km from here, during the early hours today.

The Sarhali police has registered a case under Section 380 of the IPC in this regard.

Keeping in view the seriousness of the incident, SSP Rajjit Singh Hundal, along with his other official visited the spot to collect the information.

According to the information, the CCTV camera installed at the ATM showed that the accused was wearing gloves and his face was covered.

The accused broke in the ATM by gas-welding operates and managed to take away the whole amount of Rs 15 lakh.

The bank branch was just 100 yards from the police post and moreover the branch was situated on the main National Highway number 15 in the township.

ASI Naresh Kumar, In charge of the police post told that the incident occurred at about 4.40 am when the policemen on night duty had finished their duty.

Prisoner escapes from Civil Hospital, cops suspended

Gurdaspur, September 24
Kamaljit Singh, who had been convicted in two criminal cases and was an under trail in another 10 cases, escaped after pulling wool over the eyes of as many as four police personal guarding him in the Civil Hospital here today.

Sources disclosed that the prisoner had developed an acute cut on his hand following which he was shifted to the Civil Hospital and had been recuperating in the hospital for the past 12 days.

The Gurdaspur SSP, Sukhwant Singh Gill, said a manhunt had been launched to nab the prisoner and various leads were being probed. A senior police officer disclosed that four cops who were on duty when the prisoner escaped have been suspended due to dereliction of duty.

Heavy rain causes inconvenience

Phagwara, September 24
Phagwara town and its surroundings experienced heavy rain followed by hail storms this afternoon. The rain which continued for more than one hour lowered down the weather temperature, providing relief from the humidity.

Meanwhile, several low lying areas, including Rattanpura, Palahai Gate, Hargobind Nagar, Onkar Nagar, Khaira Road and Subhash Nagar were seen submersed till knee-deep level due to lack of disposal of the rainy water and blocked sewerages of the town.

People had to face much inconvenience even to walk to their destination as rain water remained stagnated for several hours. No official of Phagwara Municipal Corporation could be contacted despite repeated attempts.

Christians protest massacre

Phagwara, September 24
Activists of Christian Samaj Manch, Punjab, today held a noisy demonstration and blocked vehicular road traffic on the national highways in protest against the massacre of Christians in Peshawar.

The protesters led by Bishop Gulzar, PJ Suleman, BSP state general secretary Jarnail Nangal and Gurmukh Singh Chana burnt Pakistani flag to register their protest against Pakistan. They urged the Union Government to break up all types of ties with Pakistan and immediately stop the bus and rail service between both the countries.

5-day photo exhibition organised by DAVP

Nawanshahr, September 24
As part of Media Out Reach programme, the Directorate of Advertisement and Visual Publicity ( DAVP), Chandigarh, has begun a 5-day Photo Exhibition on ‘Bharat Nirman and Direct Benefit Transfer’ at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Rahon, here on Tuesday.

District Education Officer, Kulwant Singh, inaugurated the exhibition. With a view to promoting the Direct Benefit Transfer (BDT) scheme, the Chandigarh Regional Office of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has also organised an enrollment camp for providing aadhaar cards. A quiz competition was also organised. The DEO gave away the prizes to the winners of the quiz.

Kulwant Singh said the exhibition would make the people especially students aware about the various welfare schemes.
