Jatt don’t ignore!
Pollywood rose, reached its heights…till it all became so familiar, similar, predictable and clichéd. So is the Punjabi film industry reaching a stage where ‘too much’ can lead to a literal collapse?
Jasmine Singh

It’s a regular affair now, so regular that almost every week a bunch of ‘sometimes known’ and ‘sometimes unknown’ faces gather at swanky place to announce the launch of a Punjabi film. Every Friday sees the multiplexes put up hoardings of a Punjabi film release. If only you were to travel back in time, you would have to scout hard for hit Punjabi films made almost ten years ago!

Are we conveniently choosing to ignore the real picture? By the end of 2013 we will have almost 100 releases, out of which only some can be counted as hits, including Jatt & Juliet 2, Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22, Naughty Jatts, Singh Vs Kaur, which could manage to win audiences as well as money. The rest just came and went by without waking up anyone. The trend of comedy and romcom exploited to the hilt, anyone with a few extra bucks turning a producer; only a handful of hero, heroines and character artists…has Pollywood reached the red mark?

Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22
Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22

The overkill

Overkill of comedy, repetitiveness is the key defaulter. Shares Punjabi film director Manmohan Singh, “After three-four films became a hit, everyone started making stuff on the same lines; it’s like a business venture now.” Every week sees a release, which, according to Manmohan Singh, is not a healthy scenario. “There are so many releases every month and all movies look the same; same scripts and same artists. Seeing one Punjabi film is like seeing half-a-dozen like them,” he adds.

Copy that

Jatt Airways, Best Of luck, Dil Tainu Karda Hai Pyar, Oye Hoye Pyar Ho Gaya, Young Malang, Jatts in Golmaal, Vyah 70 km, Fer Maamla Gadbad Gadbad, Rangeelay, Saadi Love Story…and others like the much-talked about Sikander failed at the box-office. Big stars, exotic locales, foot-tapping music, generous use of Bollywood actors as well as actresses, spiced up item songs and lots of comedy; despite the enticing package Punjabi films are no longer succeeding at the box-office. Director Amit Parsher feels the need for producers who are willing to spend money on different kind of movies and fresh actors as well. Nevertheless, he also strongly supports that audiences will not accept any film that is just made different for the heck of it. “Of course, we need new subjects but we also need people who can invest in these new people,” he adds. Amit also makes comedies but as he shares, “I make comedy because I like the genre; my films have situational comedy and not something that has just been thrown in. Making comedy is a serious business. ”

Give me more

Director Navniat Singh, who gave the hit film Mel Kara De Rabba, clears his stance. “We need more of Gippy Grewals and Jimmy Sheirgills, which means Punjabi films need new and different leading star cast. I still have to find a producer who can come with a new point and look at something new,” he says without mincing words.

The list of flops and the similarity in Punjabi films is definitely going to take it into turbulent waters, very soon. If producers are being blamed for coming in the industry with certain preconceived notions, the script-writers are being whipped for sameness of ideas and so are the actors. Director Anurag Singh, who has given Punjabi cinema the brand Jatt & Juliet, sees the signs of fatigue already setting in. “It is the creative lethargy with directors and producers who are supposedly taking the safe route in comedy. ”

Before we take the good Punjabi cinema to the danger zone, it is time to sit up and act! Experimentation is a solution. As Anurag, Amit and Manmohan Singh believe, the audience should also support films that are different in terms of substance. Do you want to take the ‘just-started-to-grow’ Punjabi cinema back to the Dark Ages?

Sculptures that speak out
The Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi pays a rich tribute to Indian sculptors through its film Contemporary Indian Sculpture
Amarjot Kaur

As part of their film screening programme, the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi showcased the film Contemporary Indian Sculpture, directed by Buddhadeb Dasgupta, at the Government Museum of Arts, Sector 10, on Sunday. The contents spoke volumes about the prolific works of several Indian sculptors.

While the film borders on the categorical frames of every sculptor’s style, language and media, corresponding to the eras that they belonged to, it also highlighted the influence of the European neo-classical naturalist mode, which most of the artists delved into for inspiration during the 19th century. For instance, Devi Prasad’s figurative sculptures are based on India’s struggle for Independence and bring to light sufferings of the common folk. The late 1930s sought much influence from the Western artists, including Brancusi, Kenneth Ford and Jean Antoine, which were also highlighted.

Prodosh Das Gupta’s modernist art was contradictory and different, as was Dhanraj Bhagat’s experimentation.

The film elaborated vividly on the thematic works of life and movement by Ram Kinkar Baij; it drew a detailed description of the works by Shiv Singh of Chandigarh, as also Balbir Katt, Latika Katt, Ramesh Pateria and Robin David’s sculptures that looked like essays on semi-geometric rhythm.

On the other hand, KG Subramaniam’s sad figurative and narrative sculptures made him the first one of his era to have renewed terracotta as a media for sculptures.

There was also a distinct mention of Mrinalini, Dhruva Mistry, Kirpan Singh Ladi and Pushpa Mala.

India inspired

Trained as an architect at École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Vincent Barre, French sculptor and film-maker, highlights the economic and technical pressures that came along with being an architect. India influences his works and he has already visited the country several times. “I constructed objects from wood and metal initially. Over the last twelve years, I have experimented with cast iron, aluminium and bronze. I even created several objects out of clay, some of which are there at the Jaipur Museum,” he says. Vincent is also a film-maker and has created several art films, including Sensibility of Sculptures, Amir—The Mountain of Buddhas and L’arc d’ Iris, which was shot along with his friend and director, Pierre Creton, at the Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh.

A liberating tune
Chandigarh girl Jasleen Aulakh has come out with her debut album Polly's Diary
Mona

It's a mother-daughter collaboration of a different kind! When young people today shun the old on account of 'generation gap', Jasleen Aulakh has come out with an album that she totally credits to her mother Polly Saghera, who has penned the lyrics!

Jasleen dreamt of being a singer but couldn't bring herself to say it. Doing bachelors in Hindustani classical music, training under Pt Yashpal for a year, Jasleen ended up in Pondicherry to learn French. It was there she came across musicians from different cultures and gathered courage to come on stage in her hometown Chandigarh.

"Playing at Purple Rice got me appreciation and courage to continue singing," says Jasleen with her mother in tow on Monday noon at Purple Rice-35.

Few gigs here and there, Jasleen stumbled upon her mother's diary and impressed by her lyrics thought of turning them into songs. On her journey she met Gaurish Sood and Rohit Joshi and together under the banner, Just Ittefaq, they have come out with the album Polly's Diary. This multilingual album has eight songs in Punjabi, Hindi, English and bit of French. "To reach out to as many people as possible is our aim," says Jasleen, who prefers folk to present her compositions.

Supna is first track dedicated to make the world a better place for women. "When one hears of female infanticide, dowry deaths and rapes, one can't help but feel sad for a girl's pride," says Jasleen who weaves social issues in her songs. The tastefully done album looks like a diary.

"I really want people to buy independent music. We are going to sell the album through oklisten.com," she says.

This young musician has also composed a song, again penned by her mum, for a Bollywood movie under the working title of Project 36. "It's on the state Kashmir is in." Happy making music, doing gigs, Jasleen likes to visit Pondicherry for inspiration. "I take immense motivation form Auroville, called the universal city in the making, where people come together from different parts of the world to live a life of unity."

Of everything that has come in life, Jasleen gives credit to her mum who has been all support for her choice of an unconventional career. "I couldn't have done it had I not found my mum's diary," says Jasleen. Her mother is equally proud of daughter's achievement. "I am happy the way Jasleen and her team have put together a beautiful album. Interestingly, fond of singing, Polly dreamt of being a radio singer, she is living her dream through her girl!

Jasleen will formally launch her album at Purple Rice-35 on Tuesday evening. You can also see her band Just Ittefaq play at Tagore Theatre on coming Friday, September 27 at 7pm. Organised by Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi, this event is open to all.

Vampire inspired!

Kangana Ranaut
Dressing down: Kangana Ranaut

When fashion's step child Vidya Balan gets it wrong, it's forgivable. You don't expect her to follow Anna Wintour's fashion directives but when someone known as fashion's own prodigy fails at the cause, it's unpardonable. Especially when the celebrity in question is Kangana Ranaut, who was a head turner in her Audrey Hepburn look last year and partied with Tod to send signals that fashion is high on her radar. Seems like she took her character in Krrish 3 a tad too seriously! At Rakesh Roshan's birthday bash earlier this month, she looked straight-from the sets of Krrish 3. Here are the details…

Hair to stay: Sporting a small puff is doing her more harm than good by shifting the entire focus on her face, which unfortunately is a bit scary to look at. But even if she had done something else with her hair, it wouldn't have made it any better.

Dress material: This is how you make a Gucci creation look bad. We mean by wearing it with frightful make-up! But if you judge the creation independently, Kangana sure understands fashion. The blue mesh-check dress takes the shape of her body and her slender figure is accentuated by the dress.

Make-up fact: It's difficult to understand why Kangana chose make-up that made her look like a vampire. Her smoky eyes are overdone so much so that they are spooky eyes; her lips are too nude, making her eyes grab all the attention. But the worst part of her get-up is her eyebrows. Looks like while using a concealer on her face, she forgot she has a pair of eyebrows too! Getting into the skin of the character is one thing, but wearing that look to scare people is something else. Also one can see the caked-up foundation on her face, hope she left a few bottles for others also in the market. This is definitely experimental fashion gone detrimental.

Accessories point: Her shoes don't go well with the dress. The colour is boring and so is the shape of the peep-toes. The clutch she is carrying doesn't make a statement either. Oh we long to see Kangana, the fashion icon, not fashion item.

Wedding made easy
Jasmine Singh

He believes that marriages are made in heaven. "Mine surely was," he laughs looking at his wife. Puneet Gaur, a young entrepreneur from Chandigarh who is a co-partner with Delicious Dine Catering Solutions, wanted to make this 'heavenly arrangement' a bit easy for everyone. He came out with The Wedding Magazine, a magazine which is an answer to all wedding problems!

Well, marriages are only made in heaven, but they have to be solemnised on earth. "I was already dealing with organising, planning and providing wedding solutions, but then I would still find many people engage in an endless search to find the best flowers, best desserts for the weddings," shares Puneet who decided to compile all the answers in a wedding magazine.

The Wedding Magazine is a bi-monthly which has articles about everything that you need to know. "The magazine has been divided into various sections to provide solutions to all kinds of questions like which are the best places to organise a wedding, to what songs to be played, what food to serve to guests, best gifts to be given ….just about everything," shares Puneet.

He will be adding new ideas each time and wouldn't restrict it to just the tricity. "Organising a marriage ceremony is sure a difficult thing. Imagine, if someone who has no idea about Himachal Pradesh or Haryana has to get organise a wedding there," he points towards the magazine which he assures will make organizing it an easy task. "I believe marriage is an event in life that should be enjoyed, The Wedding Magazine will help in that."

Adrenaline junkies
Season 2 of Discovery channel’s series Car vs Wild promises some action-packed sequences in the toughest of terrains…
Manpriya Singh

When a race rally addict meets a real-life bond, every step becomes an adventure. And every adventure a sheer example in survival! Hosts Bill Wu and Gary Humphrey welcome the extremities and wild side of nature to emerge victorious with the smug feeling of having conquered the wild. Or at least having challenged nature!

Discovery channel rolls out its Season 2 of action-packed adventure series Car vs Wild. Together they have always taken us through the savage landscapes and joining them this time is resilient Ruby—a car not especially equipped for the difficult terrains. “In this season we put to test the limits of both man and machine and venture to unforgiving locations where no car has gone before,” they give heads up over the phone. We’ve already seen them go to extraordinary places across the planet, the mountains, the deserts, rocky terrains et al

What differs this time is that it comes packed with a bit of travel experience thereby making it an adventure show meets travel diaries! Shares Bill, “This time we tour the terrains in Mexico; it’s a lot about anthropology too. We tour the country and travel a lot together.”

In each episode, Bill and Gary go head-to-head with extreme environment alongside Ruby. The duo, rather the trio, must work their way across the volcanic belt and craters in Veracruz to the suffocating dense bush of Orizaba till they reach their final destination. It goes without saying that the two cross paths with ferocious natural obstacles, which test their human boundaries. In the process, the two have to deal with snakes, bat-infested caves and deep lagoons or descend a 70-metre deep canyon.

Is there ever a limit in the wild? Speaking of which, recalls Bill, “There was a scene where we had to travel to a big cave…there were millions and millions of leeches. There were so many and so much of them that it was creepy.” Words seldom do justice to the recollection and at times, the experience is way scary than the conversation. Anything for passion! Shares Bill, an American car fanatic who owns five Hummers, a Lamborghini, a custom jeep and a Shelby Terlingua track car, “I’m an adrenaline junkie.” He practically lives cars and as for Gary, a former British Special Forces soldier, the fact that his CV comprises safety, expedition, military and off-road training, is enough to sum it up.

Floral & feminine
Celebs flaunt blue and pink palettes at Emmy red carpet

Floral-hued gowns dotted the red carpet at the Primetime Emmy awards on Sunday, mirroring the blue and pink palettes that graced runways this season. Deep blue tones stood out against the red carpet and actresses favoured feminine silhouettes at the Emmys, the first in Hollywood's six-month-long awards season.

30 Rock nominee Tina Fey led the pack of ladies opting for cobalt blue in a custom Narciso Rodriguez low v-neck gown. Girls star Allison Williams followed the trend with a flowing strapless Ralph Lauren, while Edie Falco opted for a high neckline in a cobalt Escada dress. Mad Men star Jessica Pare chose a strapless turquoise

Oscar de la Renta gown, while Nashville star Connie Britton picked a strapless turquoise velvet Naeem Khan gown with gold beading. "I love the texture and it felt like some really special," Britton said. New Girl star Zooey Deschanel strayed from her usual girly style of flirty dresses, donning an ice blue fitted J. Mendel gown. Top Chef host and nominee Padma Lakshmi chose a custom-made Kaufman Franco dress.

Breaking Bad actress Anna Gunn, who won an Emmy for best supporting actress in a drama, spun a twist on the trend with a Romona Keveza gown featuring a black beaded bodice over a pink full skirt.

"I'm seeing a lot of blues and pinks and a lot of fitted silhouettes. It's exciting and feminine," said Zac Posen, fashion designer and Project Runway judge.

Some stars favoured a bolder take on floral hues, picking deep reds, such as Modern Family nominee Sofia Vergara in a fishtail low-neck Vera Wang, Downton Abbey nominee Michelle Dockery in a two-tone Prada gown and Project Runway host Heidi Klum in a beaded Atelier Versace. Girls actresses Lena Dunham and Zosia Mamet split critics with their choices to embrace the floral print in their dresses, Dunham in a green and red Prada outfit and Mamet in a black and pink gown. Some stars went with the classic red carpet look of white and black.

The Good Wife actress Julianna Margulies wore a white column Reed Krakoff dress with a black floral print, while Top of the Lake and Mad Men actress and nominee Elisabeth Moss wore a black and white block print beaded strapless Andrew Gn. Rubenstein said his picks for best dressed of the night were Margulies, Danes, Clarke and Lakshmi. "It's about watching people take chances and not looking like everybody else on the red carpet," he said. — Reuters
