Sewer cleaners to have upgraded status
New Delhi, August 5 Dikshit said that the Cabinet has decided to upgrade the status of workers engaged in desilting and cleaning of sewer lines, under the Minimum Wages Act, 1948 on the request of the Delhi Commission for Safai Karamchari. The worker engaged in manually cleaning of sewer lines would now be termed semi-skilled workers instead of unskilled workers. They would be getting the minimum wages of Rs 8,528 per month in place of the present Rs 7,722 per month. “Similarly, the workers engaged in mechanical cleaning of sewer lines would be called skilled workers instead of unskilled workers. They would get Rs 9,386 per month in place of Rs 7,722 per month,” said Dikshit. The Cabinet also approved the strengthening of family courts in Delhi by upgrading the existing posts of judges to principal judges. At present, one post of principal judge (family court) and ten posts of judges have been functional. In order to make available one post of principal judge in each family court, the Cabinet has decided to upgrade the existing ten posts of judges to principal judges. Nine family courts are functional in Delhi at present. The first family court in Delhi was set up at Dwarka District Court Complex on May 15, 2009. The aim was conciliation between the estranged family members and not confrontation and to take away family and marital disputes from the overcrowded traditional courts of Delhi. “It was felt necessary to deploy one principal judge each in 11 family courts for the distribution of the business of the court among the various judges,” Dikshit said. She further stated that with the installation of large number of lifts, escalators and walkways, there is a need for better periodical inspection, testing and certification of lifts and escalators. The Cabinet approved the draft of the Delhi Lifts and Escalators Bill, 2013 which would be sent to the Union government prior to its presentation in the Assembly of Delhi, the Chief Minister added. |

DUTA protests point system for promotion
New Delhi, August 5 Terming it “arbitrary and anti-academic”, they said the point system, which seeks to mechanically quantify teachers’ contribution to the academic and corporate affairs of their respective institution, is based on an arbitrary academic performance indicator (API) system. And this appraisal system in its present form, they say, is designed to deny promotions and career advancement to most teachers. It will also encourage an unhealthy ‘rat-race’ for the accumulation of points, leading to undermining of the teaching learning process in the colleges and the university departments. Besides, DUTA president Prof Amar Deo Sharma said, “The DUTA also expressed its opposition to the MHRD’s intent in granting autonomy to the reputed institutions of higher learning, namely colleges like St. Stephen’s, Shri Ram College of Commerce, Lady Shri Ram College for Women and Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology. We resolve to fight any attempt to dismember and fragment the university and transfer its prestigious institutions to corporate interest.” |
