Stars on board
Strangely passionate, strangely wonderful, strangely nasty, strangely happy, strangely schizophrenic….he uses a 'strange' adjective to scrape his attributes. Do not take any one of them seriously, for the minute you do, he will surprise you with something absolutely contrary. This is an art that King of hearts, Shah Rukh Khan carries on his sleeves, along with of course a seductive dimpled smile, some extra long tresses tied in an 'unpretentious' pony tail, an unbeatable wit, energy and humongous honesty. The last attribute SRK displays as per choice. He halts at Lovely Professional University, Jalandhar with his Chennai Express and with the beautiful Deepika Padukone in tow. He likes Punjab, Punjabi food; the loudness of the people around, the place reminds him of Yash Chopra, he can sing and dance at the drop of the hat, and he does all this without being a part of it… And how?
I am there, but not there.. I am like anyone else, I love my fans, I like to spend time with my family and my kids, have breakfast with them if I am up on time, I go to work and I come back from work. Just that I work in movies makes all the difference. I like to create, I am aware of everything but not there. People think I am rude as I don't carry a telephone, but this is how I am. I lead a simple life like anyone else. I like pushing myself My shoulder was bad while I was shooting for Chennai Express. I push myself to the edge because this is how I like it. I have shot in 43 degree, I have shot in minus 10 degree temperature … this is my work. Talks about the kids' sex determination were disturbing… The kid is doing fine. He should be better soon. I was definitely disturbed when they made a hue and cry about the kids' (AbRam) sex determination. After all these years, with a volley of work behind me, I expect people to understand things. I can't go out explaining it to each one of them, and if they don't understand what can I say. It disturbs me. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was the last genuine love story I did Audiences come to the theatres expecting a particular kind of romance from me, but as far as I know, KKHH was the last romantic movie I have done. I wasn't romancing in Chak De, I played an older guy in Veer Zara, I have done different kinds of roles. Now it is action and comedy with Chennai Express. In fact, Rohit Shetty told he had written the movie for some other hero eight years ago. He told me about it and I was on. I am a director's actor I work according to them. I happen to see Jatt & Juliet, it's quiet nice My mother-in-law visiting us was seeing the movie with the kids and Gauri. I happen to catch glimpses of it then. The actor and actress of Jatt & Juliet I believe were pretty good in it. I have heard they have made a part 2 as well. Yash Chopra ji had a strong element of Punjab in his movies; given a good chance I wouldn't mind doing a Punjabi film.
Beauty with brain Stardom was never taken seriously in her family. It was and is earned through hard work without talking nineteen to dozen about it. Deepika Padukone is 15 films old, but when she comes to dealing with success, the beautiful actress takes it her stride. "It was to do with my upbringing. I had to go through my share of flops; I think I have grown as an actor with time. I have never taken success for granted but," says Deepika who has learnt the art of taking everything that comes along in being a celebrity in her stride. "It doesn't come easy, but I think the appreciation that I get from my fans and my work is far greater than all the things or me to be bogged down by them." For Chennai Express, Deepika had a special tutor on the sets to get her accent right. "The tough part was to speak Tamil with English," smiles this self confessed foodie. "Last time I visited Amritsar I had some amazing Amritsari Machi. I think I know my body, I eat everything in moderation and no starving myself," she adds.

Of colours, clothes and craft
Just back from the Rajasthan Couture Week, fashion designer Mandira Wirk is all set to head for a couple of impending celebrity styling assignments in Mumbai. She also has to come up with a collection for a couture week that is scheduled to take place in Mumbai and one for India Fashion Week's spring summer edition in Delhi. On her way, she drops by in Chandigarh on Sunday to launch Adaah Couture, the first designer couture store in the city. But you don't see Mandira hassled, in fact she is at ease with her hectic life and loves the running around part. "All because I love my work, love to create clothes that make occasions special," says the designer, who strikes a perfect contrast in an all black outfit against the bling and deluge of colours she has used for her collection.
For the same love, she has often declined Bollywood offers. Though she is a stylist to many actors, she is happy to be on the other side of camera. "Designing clothes is my forte and I am content with that. People have suggested that I should try my luck in films but I don't see myself changing tracks." She has worked the maximum with Saif Ali Khan in Bollywood, a few ads being Lays, Taj Mahal tea and Asian Paints. The collection, which she has brought to the city, is inspired from the artwork and architecture of Rajasthan. On can spot a lot of parrot motifs. Zardosi work dots the creations and crystals are inlaid, adding a subtle effect to the couture pieces. She has used a lot of navrattan colours that she says are signature of art and architecture of the state. "More than work, it is the colours that reflect the royalty of the state." She has given equal importance to silhouettes of couture pieces, which aren't limited to the traditional lehanga and choli. "Most of the creations have layers. I have also worked a lot on the draping part." There are drape sarees, (the ready made stitched sarees) and even palazzos in the collection. I prefer to make timeless pieces, something that a bride can wear at other occasions also and not just on her wedding day." She asserts that brides are ready to experiment with the bridal wear now and even cites example of a bride she recently styled. "I gave her an Anarkali lehanga with a choli and dupatta that had cut work. But actual out-of-the-box element was the colour, sea green." From Chandigarh also, she is expecting clients who will not tread the beaten path. "People here are well-travelled; I hope girls would want to try out silhouettes that don't conform to the usual ones."

Learn to relax
Renee singh Stress is a universal reaction experienced by both humans and animals. It occurs when events challenge people's abilities to respond to them. Austrian researcher Dr Hans Selye who has been called "father of stress" for his pioneering work describes stress as the body's "non specific response to any demand pleasant or not". Stress often invokes anxiety and provokes both physical and psychological reactions. Everyone reacts differently to stress. Some people are able to handle it more easily than others. It is important that we learn to recognise the symptoms of stress whether emotional or physical so that we can assess how effectively we need to manage our stress. You must be aware of how your emotions are affecting not only you but also the people who are around you - family, friends and workmates. Reading emotional signs The emotional symptoms of extreme stress include panic or anxiety attacks, various kinds of phobias, depression, anger, eating disorders, low self esteem, erratic behaviour, mood swings, loss of sense of humour and an inability to make decisions. If one loses interest in personal appearance, meeting people or is no longer interested in enjoying activities that he or she did previously, these are tell tale symptoms too. See also if there is change in relationships with friends and family. To resort these, get more sleep, read and relax, alter your lifestyle to become more stress resistant. Spotting physical symptoms Certain physical symptoms like high BP and heart disease can be life threatening. Lesser serious ones are insomnia, ulcers, headaches and digestive problems, sleep disturbances, constant fatigue, skin problems, acne are symptoms of stress. Of course they could also be caused by factors other than stress and should be checked by a doctor. Keep in mind: nTension can lead to a headache when it has been there for a long time. nNagging aches and pains in the body take over when a long and stressful event has occurred. Muscular tension is also a part of this stress game. Short term relief A lot of times people turn towards what we may call "false friends". That could even mean a dependency on cigarettes. This is only a momentary distraction and could actually have many long term effects like heart disease and other respiratory illnesses. Alcohol may make you feel relaxed for a short time but in the long term it reduces the body's ability to withstand stress. Caffeine is also another stimulant that activates the adrenalin glands and reduces the body's immunity to stress. Lead a balanced life In order to resist stress and handle pressure well, it is imperative that we maintain a balance in life. No matter how many important things are there, just learn to relax. This is vital for you. A healthy diet and moderate exercise are vital too. Stand up for your own needs, specially when you feel you are being ignored. Do not allow others to push you around. Getting the right balance in life improves well being and increases your capacity for handling pressure. Stress can be avoided by focusing on the present. If you are happy in the present it helps to be clear about your purpose in life. Have a sense of direction Once you have a sense of direction you are less likely to view minor pressures as a source of stress. When you are clear about your priorities and sense of purpose and firm in your beliefs, you can see the larger picture and not get irked by irritants. If your priorities are having fun with the family then a minor irritant like being stuck in a traffic jam will not bother you. It could be the reason for creating a stress condition for someone. Think about what is important to you and develop your religious, spiritual beliefs to help you maintain a perspective in difficult times. (Singh is Chandigarh based psychotherapist) |

Do you know Italy is called 'India' of Europe for we share not only love for food with this country but also love for music and strong family ties!
From Naples comes the concept of Sole Mio. Now open at Food Quest, Elante, you can dig in delectable Italian flavours here. "Food from Naples is spicy as compared to its northern counterparts and mainly vegetarian," Giuseppe Mozzillo, managing director, Sole Mio, opens the conversation at the formal launch recently. Along with his partner, Puneet Gupta, the duo has already established Exito Gourmet, a cheese unit that has pan India presence. For their first venture in dining, they aimed at serving the authentic food palatable to Indian tastebuds. "So, we culled dishes that were closer to Indian palate, broadened the menu and Sole Mio was born," says Giuseppe whose family has done food business for years back in Naples. "We wanted a quirky name for Indian outlet, Sole Mio (My son) just felt right." Now this place is at the food court but serves the fine dining quality food at competitive pricing. For Rs 300 you can have a working meal here. Look for bruschettas, chicken and pesto sticks, sandwiches. Their sandwiches, called panino in Italy, let you savour the flavour of fresh veggies or chicken. Their pizzas are super thin and pastas spicy. And, you can ask the willing chef to prepare the dish according to your taste. Their healthy combos give a generous serving of yummy salads . And, they do serve vegan!
On side lanes Ni Hao serves authentic Chinese on the same principle as Sole Mio, again a venture by Giuseppe Mozzillo and Puneet Gupta. Changing for the better…
Fashion changes the minute you turn your back after buying the dress in vogue, relationships change with situations, loyalties also change (we can debate on this one)…..if everything can change, and is changing, how can 'food', the ingredient for survival, be left behind?
So, drop by at the refurbished, the all-new Pewter Room, now called TPR, and witness the change in food and its interiors. A smart, chic look tastefully put together brings subtleness and adds class to the place. You can slide on a comfortable chair and take your time reading the interestingly executed menu. It might take you a while to register the good mix of dishes, European cuisines with global influences and Indian insights. Says Sonia Mohindra, hospitality consultant with TPR, "TPR was previously an upscale fine dining restaurant. With the new season and with the opening of new eating joints, we decided to take it two steps ahead, something that Ganeev Bains, owner of TPR, also wanted. We didn't lose out on the sophistication of the place, we just made the atmosphere more relaxed. From lunch to dinner, we have moved to an all-day affair." The concept of small plates and all-day breakfast are the part of the change. "With small plates we wanted to provide best dishes in small portions so that people could experiment more with food. Another thing is the all-day breakfast which again gives you options without burdening the customer with ala carte," adds Sonia. Now that you have sifted through the new leaves of the menu, it's time to place your order. Starting with the most important meal of the day, breakfast and at TPR you can have it as early as at 10 am. Bowl of fresh fruits served fresh or with maple syrup, the six-stack which includes six fresh cinnamon pancakes with choice of maple syrup/ honey or whipped cream for Rs 125 or TPR parantha, the fully loaded quiche for Rs 195 make for some interestingly healthy options. Sounds heavy on stomach? An interesting thing about the new TPR menu is the division of the dishes as per portions and make. The Small Plates section offers pan grilled Maldivian crab meat cakes for Rs 195, fresh lobsters and skewers for Rs 195 besides tandoori jhinga bachao, stewed fish with sweet mango and herbs, otak otak (Malaysian preparation of steamed fish cake wrapped in banana leaf and served with sweet chilli sauce), dhaniya aur gol mirch ki murg seekh to name a few. The main menu again sees a division--The Sea has some mouth-watering sea food dishes like grilled prawns with citrus som tam for Rs 950 and steamed basa with lemongrass, chilli and coconut broth. Ending everything on a sweet note are the Small Plate Desserts comprising crème brulee, tiramisu or the flam add sweetness and newness to your taste buds. Something for a change!

The inside story
It’s old news that Tanuj Virwani and Isabelle Liette went on a so-called romantic date. However, the interesting fact is that there were not two but three people over there. The one who got missed by the paparazzi was Aditya Seal. The trio is the lead cast, for Eros International’s next youth flick Purani Jeans, to be directed by award-winning director Tanushri Chattrji Bassu. The trio, who had bonded well during the first schedule of the film in Manali, decided to catch up for coffee in Mumbai and that is when the shutterbugs got the better of them.
“We thought it was Aditya pulling off a prank as usual and we responded to the cameras and then we realised that he hadn’t even arrived yet.” Isabelle adds, “Tanuj and Aditya used to get great pleasure in teasing me and pulling pranks on me. And I thought it was another of their old tricks.” “The next morning when I saw the newspapers, I was very amused,” guffaws Aditya Seal, the Mountain Dew model who makes his debut with Purani Jeans. “I was the third angle of the story but since I was picking up the director for the outing, I missed the drama!” As for Tanushri, she simply says the camaraderie between this trio is what Purani Jeans is all about… “Friendship is like old jeans. The more you wear it, the more comfortable it feels; never mind the wagging tongues! More so, because I know that Aditya saw the cameras and decided to stand grinning at a corner and then come and enquire with an innocent face as to what was happening.” Teaming up: The cast of the film Purani Jeans |

Dia Mirza talks about her love life
Dia Mirza has been dating Sahil Sangha for nearly five years now. She talks about the dynamics of their relationship. She is in a great space.
What’s cooking We hang out a lot in the kitchen. We both love to cook. Sahil’s the expert with European, Italian, Thai cuisines and even continental grills. So I’m left with Indian food. I swap between Hyderabadi and Punjabi cooking. But predominantly Hyderabadi, so a lot of biryani, nihari, khatti daal, kheema… the works! Social circle We spend so much of the day around each other that we make it a point to not discuss work. We don’t take scripts home. Usually, we like spending time with friends over a good meal. We also like geting animated over games like Taboo, Pictionary or Articulate. We’re not night-club people. On love and lust There can only be lust at first sight. You’ll experience love at first sight only if there’s a baby or a pet. Love and lust are both important. You need to lust after your partner because love can only take you that far. Lust is important too. It keeps the relationship exciting. All’s well We don’t fight as such but we do argue because we’re both stimulated souls. More or less, we have a calm relationship. Despite being strong-headed, the reason we don’t clash is because our basic value system is identical. We want the same things out of life. Marriage material An ultimatum has been given to him. He’ll have to act fast. I’m pretty sure, if not at the beginning of 2014 then by the end of the year, we’ll be married. (Grins) I’m just being a soothsayer. We’ve been dating for four and a half years but it doesn’t feel that long. With Sahil, there’s always been this inherent comfort. He’s got stability in my life, which I wouldn’t have been able to achieve on my own.

Graduating to films is my dream too: Ridheema
Ridheema Tiwari, who was seen in many shows, including Rishto Se Badi Pratha, Sasural Genda Phool and Arranged Marriage Ya Love Marriage, is currently seen as Rasika in Do Dil Ek Jaan. She talks her role, working in the television industry and more…
How have people responded to your character, Rasika, in the show? My character is adding spice to the show and people like it because the role is very different. However, I will be happier if more people write to me on my twitter account. How has the experience of working in the television industry been so far? It has been a rollercoaster ride and initially had to struggle a lot. Neither had I been to an acting school, nor had I acted before. Also, everything about the camera was new to me. But, with time and constant efforts, I kept learning by observing people around me. I make it a point to learn something new every day. This industry has made me more confident, gifted me the art of loving myself and also taught me patience. Are you planning for Bollywood? Graduating to films is my dream too. I consider myself as a good-looking and confident person. Like other actors, I am also looking for the right project and the right opportunity to be seen in films. When not acting, what do you like to do? I love listening to music, right from the classics to gazals and filmy types. I love watching movies. Also, I like to read whenever I get time. Who are your favourite actors? I like Irrfan Khan and Kareena Kapoor. One TV actor you want to work with… I would like to work with the cast of Sasural Genda Phool. Do you have any phobia? I am scared of water. I don't know how to swim but I wish to learn it someday.
