Food for soul
There's a meaning behind lyrics, which emerge from the many ironical experiences that the life has to offer. Gurdas Maan, once again, didn't have to refer to commercial dictates before naming his latest album, Roti. Like always, it is served with love and all the right intentions.
"It started from an eating experience itself. One should be grateful to God, if it's in your hands and one should be all the more grateful if it's served to you by your loved ones," he shares, while in Chandigarh, during the launch of his album. The inspiration for the title song comes from the life's most humble and universal ritual and the rest is history. Each of the eight songs in the album, carry his signature touch, either in the form of the content or the presentation. "I'm like a mother so all the songs are dear to me. Just like a mother loves her children no matter how clumsy they are." There's yet another, his ladla bacha, titled Pind Di Hawa, the next song to be picturised after Roti. "Roti was initially supposed to be 'cooked' at Fatehpur Sikri but things didn't materialise and then we went to Hyderabad, where it was raining as if God had personally decided to bestow all His blessings." Finally, the shoot happened at a 1960's set that has been preserved till date. Someone quipped as to his personal interest in making rotis or cooking for that matter. "When I was a student, three of us shared a room and I was in charge of making rotis. Somebody else cooked dal." Like always, he didn't feel the need to dilute his content, no matter what the markets say. "How can I complain about some of the songs and the popular artistes? A lot of things have changed but if God has decided to bestow fame on them, so be it. Some are famous for their evil deeds, some for their good work." There's Binnu Dhillon, joining on the stage and counting himself among the many fans present. Daler Mehendi, also staying at the hotel, drops in to say a few words and congratulate the artiste and the fans. Just as he's done addressing the initial queries, more and more emerge. Someone wants to know the secret behind his eventful six decades and still going strong. Perhaps, he should bare it all in a biopic. Like the one on Milkha Singh and proposed one on Dara Singh. "When I studied physical education, we all read about these people. Their lives are very inspiring. But nothing extremely interesting in my life has happened." Coming up is yet another film, to be directed by his wife. Shares Manjeet Maan, "We have submitted the title of the film and if it gets approved, we'll go ahead with the movie." Till then, he waves a short goodbye with a parting gift in the form of an album. manpriya@tribunemail.com

Drape it like a dream
Sheer pleasure: Sabyasachi
A look at the collection that Sabyasachi presented on the opening day of the PCJ Delhi Couture Week and we are floored! We are mesmerized by his muted colours that are rendered a shine by the judicious use of sequins. We crave to feel the delicate crewel work that dominates most of his collection. We want more of Sabyasachi. His collection is that addictive. The celebrated Indian designer might have his reasons to title the collection, Opium, but this is what we deduce from it. It's the sheer beauty of the clothes he constructs that makes him a favourite in the celebrity circle. That makes his label the most worn at Cannes. And that makes Shefalee Vasudev, a fashion critic, call him the Yuvraaj of Indian Fashion Industry in her book, Powder Room. Opium comprises bandhgalas, short tops, garaaras, flapper jackets, flapper coats, duster coats, Mughal coats to kurtas, lehengas and sarees. His sarees are a treat to the eyes. One can easily make out the floral patterns on the petticoats underneath the sheer sarees which are laden with sequins towards the hemline and on the pallu. Inspired from the 1920's era, his collection boasts of handicrafts popular then. There is appliqué, zardosi and tilla work apart from the crewel work that the designer has focused on. Even the prints in his ensemble are in pastel tones. The sherwani that has blue floral print has golden buttons for embellishment.
Bright side: Anju Modi
While Sabyasachi limits his colour palette to pastels, Anju Modi presents colours that have always been a bride's
favourite.
Titled Draupadi, the collection is designer's imagination of Draupadi's appearance during her wedding to the Pandavas, her state of mind during the game of dice and her devotion to Lord Krishna.
The designer has accordingly used crimson, indigo and fawn, suiting different moods. The collection comprises lehanga, sarees and gowns.

Parineeti Chopra talks about her life before she joined movies... Degrees galore
I was brilliant in studies. I topped in Economics in my twelfth
grade. When I passed out of the Manchester Business School, recession had struck and people were getting laid off more than being recruited. I don't regret not being an investment banker because I've already done a brief stint at companies like HSBC and JP Morgan. Besides, being on the film sets is much more enjoyable than pursuing finance. Arts and culture
Academics apart, I could never pull off any kind of sport. But I always represented my school in cultural activities, be it musicals the choir or debate competitions. I was also the head girl in school and would never bunk classes. I learnt music for six years and can play the harmonium and the tanpura. Manchester days
I moonlighted as a team leader for the catering department of the football club, Manchester United. I had absolutely no interest in football and many a time, David Beckham would pass by and I wouldn't recognise him at all. It was only after my British friends pointed out that I learnt about him. All of them were jealous as I had exclusive access to the stadiums where matches were played but never made any use of it. On pick-up lines
Honestly, nobody has ever used any kind of pick-up line on me, cheesy or smart. In college, I was quite plump and nobody ever asked me out. Now that I've entered films, it is all the more difficult as people are conscious before asking an actress out for a date. I will be attracted to a guy who smells good but then he has to be funny also. Gymming and all that
It's the worst thing in the world to do. I'm a shameless foodie and cannot resist pizzas to save my life. No wonder, I used to be really fat. But because of the profession I'm in, I've been asked to avoid such indulgences. I don't work out because I'm running all the time on the sets and that keeps my weight in check.
