Calling the shots
Women are no longer content dancing in the sarson ke khet. They want to invest, direct and even control the production. Here comes the new-age women brigade of Punjabi cinema…
Jasmine Singh

She would cry whenever and wherever it was required. In fact, she still does. She would sing and dance in the sarson ke khet, around the tube well, and off late in malls and foreign locales. She would gladly slip into a designer wear, let her hair down and perk up the glamour quotient. Other than that… well, she has always been a reason behind all the major fights, and she single handedly changes the climax of any movie. The honourable actresses in Punjabi cinema have always done their required bit of song, dance and drama.

The scenario in Punjabi cinema hasn't changed a bit, but what has changed and refreshingly too is the participation of women behind the camera. Women director, producer, line producer, casting director, writer….. did we hear that before? The still bulging Punjabi cinema is now being joined by the women brigade, taking up the tasks, which she never did. Some of these women share their stories…

Show me the money
Poonam Pawar: Producer

She came to India after spending a good number of years abroad. She loves Punjabi films, and this is what prompted her to produce one. "After some research I came across the script of Sikander, which I decided to produce," shares Poonam, who had to go through her share of ups and downs. "Punjabi film industry is turely male dominated, a woman is meant only for acting. No one took me seriously when I decided to turn a producer. They couldn't imagine a woman handling money and calling the shots."

For this pretty girl, being a producer wasn't that easy. She had to face a tough time from the team. "I had to involve myself in the process of movie making, which meant I had to understand many things, which also meant that I was interfering in many departments," says Poonam.

She had to make her way, assert herself and face opposition. "All I wanted was to be a part of an interesting concept-driven movie. All the experience was worth it," she heaves a sigh of relief.

Director's cape
Anuja Sachdeva: Director producer

Anuja loves everything about cinema, she has acted in a couple of films before she went behind the camera, saying aloud the first word--cut. Anuja makes her directorial venture in Punjabi film industry with the movie Aashiq Patthey starring Sarrtaj Gill, Soni Barring, Keeya Khanna, Yuvraj Goel, Deedar Gill,Om Puri and Mukul Dev.

Anuja Sachdeva

What prompted her to take up Punjabi movie? "Punjabi films now have an international reach," says Anuja, last seen in Teen Patti as an actress. Based out in Mumbai, Anuja chose Punjabi films to start her career as a director. "I had a nice script, a good team to begin with," she smiles hinting on the challenges that came along with the decision. "I am directing and producing a Punjabi film, so you know it means a lot. Of course, the industry needs more professionalism, at the same time I know how to get work from my actors." Language could be a slight barrier, the lady however, believes, "If I know my job, nobody can point finger on me."

Casting scope
Jyotika Badyal: Casting director
Jyotika Badyal
Jyotika Badyal

Till now in Punjabi film industry a woman casting director was unheard of. Jyotika Badyal, a freelance casting director from Chandigarh, has recently picked up almost 35 films for a Punjabi production house Batra Showbiz. The words not-that-easy is something she has learnt to take in stride. "I am from Jammu, married in Chandigarh. I don't know of many women doing it for Punjabi films," she shares. Jyotika has done casting for Hindi projects, when it comes to Punjabi films she can draw a list of challenges. "People don't take a woman seriously. In fact, some do not even want me on the sets," she says.

Scissors sharp
Avtar Kaur: Hair stylist

She has been working in Punjabi films for almost eight years now, styling hair for lead Punjabi actresses, and models for Punjabi videos. Jatt & Juliet and Sirphire are her prestigious projects. "I have enjoyed working with all the actresses. The industry has always been welcoming and a nice place to work." Avtar Kaur, based in Mohali, styles hair for the lead actresses and dancers in films. "I give cuts according to the shape of the face. I liked styling for Tulip Joshi," she adds.

Control freak
Nisha sharma: Production controller
Nisha Sharma
Nisha Sharma

A theatre artiste, Nisha handles production and casting. "For the late night shoots of Heer & Hero, I had to stay back the entire night. Other than the actress I was the only woman on the set. I would run around, handle production and money," Nisha shares how her work gives her the thrill.

"I work with Theatre Army Productions, which is a close-knit group. This takes care of the security angle," she says.

The stage is set…
A four-day theatre festival will showcase some of the finest works of Munshi Prem Chand
Amarjot Kaur

The true essence of theatre lies in the relationship between human and society, and one cannot thrive in the absence of the other. While reflecting upon this understanding, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Tagore Theatre Society have come up with a venture that aims to showcase the finest literary works of Munshi Prem Chand, one of the foremost Hindustani writers of the early 20th century.

The festival will begin on August 3 and will continue till August 6 at Tagore Theatre at 7 pm daily.

Of women and their kind

Directed by Vandana Vashist, the play, Nirmla will be enacted by the Rang Virasat Theatre group on August 3. "The female characters in Prem chand's stories are very intense. Nirmla is a story about a 16-year-old woman who gets married to a man of her father's age. What amuses me is that though Prem Chand belonged to the 12th century, a part of his India continues to breathe even today," opines Vandana.

Money matters

"It seems like money and values will continue to remain at the daggers drawn till eternity. As Prem Chand story, Namak Ka Daroga, laments the corruption during the British rule, the battle seems to continue even today," shares P Chandershekar, the director of the play which will be staged on August 4.

A serious shift

Rajiv Mehta will direct Riyasat Ka Deewan, a serious play, which depicts the desire of every human to be successful. The play will be staged on August 5.

Class apart

"The play, Mandir, is about the story of a woman from a low class. It traces the events of her life only to decipher that money is the new religion and now the distinction of classes is marked by the amount of money they have," says Chakresh Kumar, the director of the play that will be enacted by Alankar Theatre Group on August 6.

Star power

Deepika Singh is basking under the success of her hit show Diya Aur Baati Hum. Being part of such a popular show also has its own perks- meeting the superstars of Bollywood is one of them.
Deepika Singh
riding high: Deepika Singh

You will be shooting with Shah Rukh Khan soon.

Yes, he will appear on our show and it is a huge honour for all of us. I admire him and the way he has become so successful without any connections in the industry. I loved him in all his film Chakh De, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, DDLJ, Swades as in each film he gave a different flavour.

Aamir and Salman Khan too have come on your show?

It has been a great experience. They are all so down to earth and wonderful people.

What do you think of the ongoing competition in your show? Do you find it a bit unreal?

No it is about how many things you can do in the given time limit. It requires you to use your intellect and show decision making skills.

You recently celebrated your birthday on the sets. Was it tough?

Diya Aur Baati Hum gave me name and success. Everyone wants to do well in life so it is a good thing that I was working on my birthday. I wanted to spend time with my family but work comes first and as I spend 20-25 days with this unit, they are a family now. On my birthday, we packed up late so I couldn’t go anywhere with friends or family but on the previous night my family was with me till midnight.

You got your sister married recently, what are your thoughts on marriage?

Marriage happens when two minds meet and when God wants it. My sister is younger to me and when she found someone, I didn’t want her to wait. As for my marriage it will happen when it is destined.

Deepika on right track

Deepika Padukone had a series of flops and now she has hits and blockbusters, one bigger than the other. Post Cocktail, she is an actress to reckon with. She talks about her upcoming movie, her DDLJ moment and more.

On board
Deepika Padukone
Deepika Padukone

I was offered Chennai Express and I agreed to do it immediately. There was no conversation whatsoever. When Rohit Shetty narrated the script to me, I was in splits. I find it silly to justify that why I am doing the movie. In it, the girl's character is integral to the plot and quite strong. Also, Rohit's previous movies have been ensemble affairs and I feel Kareena had a strong role in Golmaal 3.

                                     DDLJ moment

I saw DDLJ as a 10-year-old so I loved having my own moment with my own Rahul in Chennai Express. It was a reliving experience for Shah Rukh also, except that to make it new and different, I offer him my hand instead.

                                    Hit streak

Of course, I want the movie to make Rs 100 crore or more. But the final figures are something that Shah Rukh Khan, UTV and Rohit Shetty need to worry about. I would love my hit streak to continue, of course. It feels great.

Working hard

I know I had back-to-back flops a few years ago and my career was in a low phase. But I have worked hard to enter the hundred crore club with back-to-back films grossing hundred crore or more, so I deserve this. I am not holding onto it but I value it a lot and I will move on to even bigger achievements.

No luck by chance

I am proud of my achievements. I have built my career and identity on my own. I am financially secure and independent. I had a great debut but I did not piggyback on anyone's success. I run a household today quite independently. Nothing in my life has happened by chance. I feel luck and fortune favour the brave and hard-workers.

Wise talk
Soha Ali Khan learns to be positive

Soha Ali Khan has an affable charm. She is down-to-earth and easy to talk to. She talks about her friends in Bollywood and being an actor.

Roller-coaster ride
Soha Ali Khan
Lessons of life: Soha Ali Khan

The life of an actor is like a roller-coaster ride. I was frustrated and had unfulfilled dreams but I know you cannot change anything by worrying and staying up all night thinking about it. I have learned to become calm and composed and positive over the years. I know that I will get great work. I am comfortable in my own skin. My family has encouraged me to value myself a lot more. I am in a good space.

           Friends are forever

I have many friends in the industry and I am still friends with my childhood friends because they keep me real and grounded. Those relationships are precious. I get along well with my co-stars because I am easy-going. I am friends with Kangna Ranaut, Abhay Deol, Sharman Joshi and Neha Dhupia. Sharman and I are doing a film together and we are getting along like we did during Rang De Basanti.

Redefining roles

Earlier, it was taboo for women to act. Now, any female actor will lap up the role of a sex-worker and it is natural that she will win awards and accolades. I do not feel the need to play a sex-worker or a damsel in distress to prove my mettle. I would even advise the same to others. I am happy playing the modern woman who is quirky, witty, strong, confident, easy, independent and ambitious.

Al Pacino likes Once Upon A Time…

If the promos of Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara have heightened the anticipation for the film, here is the ultimate endorsement.

Akshay Kumar, the film's menacing Shoaib, essaying the finest grey character of his career, has found an admirer of epic proportions.

The romantic drama, directed by Milan Luthria, has caught the attention of the original Godfather, Al Pacino, who was blown away by the film's theatrical trailer and by Kumar's towering presence in the film.

During an informal discussion between Pacino and his business associate, Barry Navidi, the latter mentioned Once Upon A Time….., being touted as Bollywood's answer to edge-of-the-seat bad boy entertainers. Pacino, impressed with the trailer, saw himself reminiscing about his Godfather days. Pacino says, "My friend Barry Navidi showed me a promo for an Indian film with Akshay Kumar. It brought some fond memories back from my Godfather days."

Akshay remarks, "A touch of appreciation is always held dearly in an actor's arms, even if it's from the simplest of people like our beloved spot boys. But to have your work spoken of so kindly by the world's most admired gangster Al Pacino himself - I had goose-bumps thinking about him watching the promo! I was so humbled, not only as an actor but as a fan of his legendary work. I pray he enjoys the final piece as much as he enjoyed the promo!"

Director Luthria concludes, "I'm walking around with a silly grin and you know why! The only actor's portrait in my cabin is of this God of Gangsters! An all-time legend and personal favorite. Thank you!"

OUATIMD releases worldwide on August 15.

CELEB POINT
Facing life head on!
Divya Dutta

Far from the madding crowd, I decided to take a break with a few friends. We decided on my farmhouse in the outskirts of Mumbai. With ma's aloo ka paranthas packed for the road and a flask of garam chai to complement the rain, we left for our adventure journey. What could be better than Kishoreda's lovely voice to Panchamda's music playing in the background?

The picturesque views on the outskirts were such a delight. It didn't seem that we just left the hustle bustle of Mumbai.

As we reached my outhouse, surrounded by beautiful hills, waterfalls and a river flowing by, I just felt like getting out and dancing in the rain. My friends felt that way too. We decided to trail up the hills and reach the waterfall. Dense plantation, slippery little road and rain to top it, hiking wasn't easy but our enthusiasm got the better of us. It was all going fine till we reached the top and I decided to slip. Thankfully, I didn't hurt myself badly. Trekking up the muddy path was such a beautiful experience. And then the waterfall, the closest you could be with nature. Serene green and beautiful, birds chirping but the sound of the waterfall dimming them out, we wished that time had stopped! The peace within was unparalleled. One of my friends came up with an adventure trail of walking down the hill with the waterfall. Risky, yes but do-able as it wasn't steep. Not knowing what lay ahead, we held each other and our sticks to find our path. Falling, tripping, laughing and fearing! Isn't life a mix of all emotions too and the fun is to feel them all together, not wait for one to pass by for the other to take over! It felt like taking life head on. Our raincoats now had been forgotten, our fear of getting wait or slipping had been overcome. Now, it was giving ourselves to the moment, uninhibited, unhesitant, just the pure fun of the moment and we all came out blissful. Having lived it to the fullest!

Cycling by the river, singing songs, followed. And playing in the mud, yes I did it all! As I was drenched in the rain cleaning the mud off me, a group of people also visiting there looked at me. I saw a look of disbelief. A bit hesitant, they asked, "Divya Dutta?"

I nodded. I could hear the little girls shriek, "O my god, so good to see you. You okay with being in the rain?" "Yes, I am", and thought to myself 'till you stay in the safe shelters, how will you ever know what fun it is to go out there and dance in the rain…'

Came back home to Mumbai, to the virtual jungle! Back to work. Scripts, different frame of mind, what remained was the thought, 'not to stay sheltered'. To go all out in the rain and experience life the way it should be experienced. Head on!

Beyond backwaters
From the first shower of monsoon to backwaters, from Jewish connection to handicrafts, Kerala has a lot to offer to tourists
Manpriya Singh

There's a Jewish connection in the form of a synagogue built in 1615, there's Jerusalem's legacy in the form of St Thomas Syrian Church. Thrown in is also some literature on the Portuguese connection. If history doesn't entice you, then handicrafts will. Wake up to the rhythm of looms, at the hub of Kerala's handloom industry in a sleepy village of Balaramapuram. Let the aroma of spices be a way of life while the stay lasts.

Gujarat Tourism might have needed Amitabh Bachchan to rope in crowds, but not the God's Own Country. Kerala Tourism entices you much beyond its backwaters. "It is a policy matter but even without an official face we are a booming tourism industry. We witnessed close to 8 lakh foreign tourists last year and over one crore domestic tourists," shares Thomas Antony, Tourist Information Officer, during a promotional glimpse into the state. He adds, "But some time back we had the late MF Husain and Shashi Tharoor promoting the place."

A couple performs the colourful art form kathakali, girls follow with Mohiniyattam. We might not associate martial arts with the state, nevertheless there's one on display.

"The best time to visit Kerala is from December to May." The Kerala shopping trail includes the handicrafts, souvenirs, spices, eco-friendly bamboo products or even gold.

"The Kerala's gold connection has its roots in the ancient spice route." The motifs like leafs, flowers, mangoes, parrots and peacocks are said to be common.

Just in case the influx of tourists and statistics makes you picture the overloaded infrastructure, they have things in place. "We practice responsible tourism in several states. We are especially developing the practice at major destinations."

The bio-diversity of the Western Ghats with its medicinal plant reserves beckons those on a rejuvenation trip. There's a policy to single out the quacks too. "Under the department's quality assurance policy, a visitor looking for therapeutic and rejuvenation programmes would be guided by grading systems of the state for ayurvedic institutions."
