Residents of 28 villages face inconvenience
Parmod Mehta

Banur, July 28
The residents of over 28 villages in Banur have been facing inconvenience due to their link with other two districts, Patiala and Mohali. The residents have been demanding that they should be attached with their old district, Patiala, as they are already linked with the Rajpura assembly constituency that falls in Patiala district and are bound to visit the region for all kinds of works relating to the police department or the panchayat department.

Residents alleged that they have to visit Mohali for revenue related work. Due to this reason Banur police station was dismantled a few months back and the villages were attached with Lalru, Sohana and Zirakpur police stations. Government officials said that this action was initiated as a result of ill functioning of the administration as it was linked with two districts already.

Following a protest by the residents of the area against the dismantling of the police station, government has started an inquiry of the issue.

Soccer tourney stopped midway
Remaining matches to be held later as St John’s team wants to participate in another tourney
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 28
Providing VIP treatment to a local private school, the UT Education Department has postponed the ongoing Inter-School Football Championship for boys (U-17). Reason-the team of St John’s School, Sector 26, one of the semifinalists, wants to participate in a private tournament.

The tourney was ceased at the semifinal stage after the respective school wanted to participate in some other tournament, held annually, for all the convent schools. The step of the UT Education Department has left the other semifinalists red-faced. St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, DAV Public School, Sector 8, and Delhi Public School, Sector 40, are the other semifinalists of the soccer cup.

Fearing interference of the top officials, one of the chair-bearers of District Education Office, said, “The school has informed the UT Education Department about their participation in the private tournament. The request was forwarded to the District Education Officer (DEO) a month ago and the permission letter was forwarded to the respective department in no time,” said the official, seeking anonymity. But when questioned about the fact that if the respective team was well-aware that they will reach the semifinals (a month prior to the tournament) and about the standard of the private tournament (in comparison to inter-school tournament), the official maintained, “You (the reporter) can contact the DEO, he is the best person to comment.”

However, the concerned official was not available for comments despite repeated attempts. Education Secretary and the DPI of the schools were also not available for their comments.

Interestingly, the decision was taken at the eleventh hour and the other participating schools were given no written intimation about the postponed dates. The coaches of the respective teams only received a phone call, on the night prior to match, by the tournament in-charge. Not only the tournament but also the trials to select probable team for the upcoming national championship for boys (U-17), scheduled to be held on last day of the tournament, were also postponed till the further orders.

A coach of a school, added, “We have not received any intimation in a written communication by the education department. If the department was too sure about their participation, they must have conducted the tournament according to the dates that suit the school. There is no disclosure of any new dates and why the school is being benefitted with all this?” asked a coach. Another coach of a convent school, added, “Why should other teams suffer, if one team is not willing to participate in the state championship conducted by the education branch of the UT Administration? The team is not representing the city, neither the nation in the respective tourney so why they are exempted for m this tourney. Will any principal allow his or her students to leave the examination in-between in order to attempt other examination and then return back after a week?” questioned a coach of a semifinalist convent school.

When contacted the school authorities, the respective coordinator said, "Yes, the team is away to play in the tournament. But not sure about the inter-school tournament is being postponed due to that. Principal is the ultimate authority to comment on this, but she is out of the city for attending a conference," said coordinator Likhari.
