2 students among 3 killed in accident
Chandigarh, July 23
Three persons, including a driver and two college students from Vaishali in Ghaziabad, were killed while two others were injured in a freak accident involving a Tavera and an Audi Q7 car on the road separating Sectors 17 and 18 last night.

Leopard scare grips Morni village
Panchkula, July 23
Chief wildlife inspector Rakesh Sharma interacts with residents at Chamka village in Morni on Tuesday. A female leopard has been spotted with her two cubs at Chamka village in Morni, spreading a scare among residents. The residents are forced to stay indoors after the wild cat attacked pets of the villagers.

23 students taken ill after consuming iron tablets
Panchkula, July 23
Children of Government Senior Secondary School, Tikkar Taal, admitted to Government Hospital at Morni on Tuesday. Just a day after the much talked about 'Solid Bano India' campaign was launched by the health department, 23 students of two government schools were taken ill after popping iron pills. They were admitted to hospitals. A total of 17 students, including 15 girls, of Government Senior Secondary School, Tikar Taal in Morni, have been admitted to a hospital. Six cases have been reported from a government school at Basola.

Teachers’ protest enters Day 2 
Chandigarh, July 23
Members of the Joint Action Committee of UT Schoolteachers hold a protest at Sector 17 in Chandigarh on Tuesday. Protest launched by the Joint Action Committee of UT Schoolteachers entered its second day today. They are protesting against the “dictatorial” attitude of the Education Department for suspending four teachers and lodging FIR against them. They shouted slogans against the officers of the Education Department while staging a demonstration near hotel Shivalik View, Sector 17, Chandigarh.

Sahayta’s cure for cancer

Gene Xpert Machine at the PGI, Chandigarh. In a significant development, the PGIMER today inaugurated Gene Xpert Machine which will help experts find a permanent cure for cancer. One of the latest equipment for blood cancer patients, the machine was inaugurated in the department of haematology, PGIMER.

UT Admn told to form panel to implement RTE Act in city schools
Chandigarh, July 23
The Punjab and Haryana High Court today asked the Chandigarh Administration to form a committee to look into the implementation of the Right to Education Act in city schools. The committee will comprise experts from the Central Board of School Examination, UT Education Department and renowned educationists from the city.

36 vehicles on Panjab University authorities’ radar

Alarmed by the clash between supporters of different parties earlier this month at the help desks on the campus which left two injured, the Panjab University (PU) authorities have prepared a list of suspicious vehicles on the campus, which would be under scanner by the university security.

Eco Club Day celebrated
Chandigarh: Government Model High School, Sector 38 West, celebrated Eco Club Day with the inauguration of Eco Club Avni on Tuesday. It was inaugurated by Deputy Director (schools) Chanchal Singh. The Deputy Director along with school headmistress, teachers and students planted saplings to mark the occasion. A cultural program was also organised by the teachers of the school.

Entrance test for MPhil on August 6
Chandigarh: Panjab University (PU) has issued revised schedule for submitting applications for the MPhil (Sri Guru Granth Sahib Studies) course at the School of Punjabi Studies. Applications have been re-invited till August 2 in the office of Department of Punjabi on the prescribed proforma for the MPhil course.

Woman sets herself afire in Sirhind
Fatehgarh Sahib, July 23
Unable to bear the torture at the hands of her husband and in-laws, Sonia, a resident of Brahman Majra in Sirhind, set herself ablaze. Incharge of the Sirhind police post Harminder Singh said the victim in her statement to the magistrate said she married Praveen Kumar, an employee of the block development office, four years ago. It was her second marriage.

The Punjab State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has penalised two senior eye surgeons of Patiala for not carrying out tests, such as EKO, X-Ray and B-Scan on a patient, who had developed complications after a few days of his cataract surgery.

2 held with gold ornaments
Zirakpur, July 23
The police has arrested two persons and with a gold jewellery worth Rs 3 lakh and a box of costly medicines worth over Rs 1 lakh. The accused have been identified as Munish Kumar, a resident of Shiv colony, Fatehabad, Haryana, and Pardeep, alias Pintu, a resident of Ashiana village, Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Man held for supplying illegal weapons
Mohali, July 23
The police has arrested another member of a gang involved in supplying illegal firearms and fake arms licences. The accused has been identified as Arwinder Singh, alias Pappu (45), a resident of Prince Colony, Ludhiana. A .32 bore pistol and five live cartridges were recovered from his possession.

Peon held on extortion charge
Chandigarh, July 23
The Vigilance Cell of the UT police today allegedly caught Chandu Ram of Sector 55 for accepting extortion money of Rs 10,000. Chandu Ram was working as a peon with the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board and allegedly took money in order to return original National Saving Certificates worth Rs 12,000 to complainant Sadhu Singh.

Fake call sends UT police in a tizzy
Chandigarh, July 23
A fake call of kidnapping of a young girl at the Sector 31 and 32 light point sent the UT police in a tizzy today. A 40-year-old Mohali resident concocted the story of his daughter’s kidnapping and called the police control room. Later in the afternoon, the police came to know that the contractor had cooked up a story after he met with an accident in Panchkula last evening.

Man stabbed, robbed off cash
Chandigarh, July 23
A Sector-20 resident was robbed off his bag containing cash in Sector 48 here last night. Vikas Jain of Sector 20-A, alleged that three unidentified occupants of a red coloured motorcycle came near him while he was near a showroom in Sector 48-A. One of the three took out a knife and stabbed him and snatched Jain’s bag containing Rs 65,000 and four mobile phones.
