Rampura, July 22 Seven of them were taken to the Rampura Government Hospital in ambulances and private vehicles. While three of the injured students were discharged another three are being treated for multiple injuries. One of the injured was shifted to a hospital in Bathinda and was undergoing various tests. It is learnt that the students of a government school in Mehraj had gone to attend a sports tournament in the nearby Dhipali village and the accident took place at around 4 pm while they were on their way back. The injured students have been identified as Onkar Singh, Sandeep Singh, Harpreet Singh, Lakhwinder Singh, Palwinder Singh, Sukhpreet Singh and Pardeep Singh. Area residents accused the school authorities of not bothering about the safety of the students as they allowed them to attend the tournament without any teacher or an adult accompanying them. School principal Karnail Kaur said she was at the hospital to enquire about the injured students. "While one student has received an injury in his ear, one injured his leg while another had an injured thigh," she said. She claimed that the teachers were following the students on bikes. Since there was no direct bus to Dhipali village from Mehraj it was decided to take students in a tractor-trolley, which was comparatively safer than changing two buses. Dr Amrit Sethi added that such a judgment had cast doubts especially when seen in the light of Supreme Court’s directive in 2010 by the bench of Justices Raveendran and Patnaik that a single entrance test would save poor and meritorious students from physical and financial stress of travelling from one city to another to appear in multiple entrance tests in the hope of bagging an MBBS, BDS or MD seat in a college. “The present judgment had shattered common man’s faith in higher judiciary,”he said. |
