Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 22
In a high-speed car chase across Outer Delhi, an alleged carjacker was shot dead in an encounter with two police constables in broad daylight today.

Sources said the deceased has been identified as Amit Dahiya (27), who is allegedly involved in a murder in Sonipat, Haryana and a robbery in Narela.

"A massive manhunt has been launched to find the other culprits," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Outer District) Sanjay Kumar. The police estimate that there were a total of three to four carjackers.

According to the police, at about 2.15 pm, a Ford Endeavour car bearing a Haryana numberplate was robbed at gunpoint near the Sachdeva School in Sector-13, Rohini. The police immediately launched a search for the vehicle as well as the carjackers across Outer Delhi.

In the area falling under the Narela police station, Constables Baljit Singh Chahal and A S Bohara spotted a white Ford Endeavour car without numberplates. The car was heading towards Sannoth village.

"Suspecting that the numberplate might have been removed, they started chasing the culprits in a passerby's vehicle. The Endeavour car hit a sidewall on a narrow road in Sannoth village. The constables surrounded the Endeavour and challenged the culprits. A scuffle ensued between them in which a culprit opened fire. Baljit sustained a bullet injury in his right thigh. He fired back with his service pistol and one of the culprits got injured," said Kumar.

The officer added that the other accused escaped taking advantage of the commotion. The injured accused was taken to the Maharishi Valmiki Hospital in Puth Khurd, where doctors declared him dead.

Transport Minister Ramakant Goswami today chaired a high-level meeting in this regard which was attended by officials from the department, Indraprastha Gas Limited and Union of Transporters of Delhi.

Goswami said that Indraprastha Gas Limited will steer the implementation of the scheme for the drivers. "The drivers are the backbone of public transport in the unorganized sector operating in Delhi. He said that all drivers driving public transport vehicles having endorsement of CNG mode of registration certificate are in policy coverage meeting. The vehicles should be registered in RTO of Delhi and the drivers must have a valid licence to drive such vehicles.

This scheme is expected to benefit the families of approximately 2.50 lakh drivers of CNG-run public transport vehicles. A total Rs 1.5 lakh would be given to the nominees in case of death of a driver while driving a public transport vehicle besides an additional amount of Rs 25,000 towards Children's Education Allowance per child subject to a maximum of Rs 50,000 (two children). East Delhi may face power cuts
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 22
Power supply will be affected on July 23 and 24, as the power distribution company, BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL), will remove the electricity towers installed on the Akshardham-Noida road to pave way for the construction of 'East Delhi-Haat'.

The supply will be interrupted in areas such as housing societies and commercial complexes along the Akshardham-Noida road, particularly in Mayur Vihar Phase 1.

These towers will be dismantled and removed between 10 am and 5 pm. For undertaking the task, BYPL will have to take a planned shutdown in the area.

"Though BYPL has back-fed the area, there is still a possibility that the power supply may affect some areas," said a senior BYPL official.

"The company has already started the process of dismantling and removing the towers in the area. In place of these towers, BYPL has started installing underground electricity cables. Earlier, the towers installed on the connecting NH 24 via 'Hasanpur-Max Hospital' have already been removed and cables shifted underground," he said.

There is a proposal to setup 'East Delhi-Haat' near the Akshardham-Noida road.

Like other Delhi-Haats, this haat, when completed, will be a major tourist attraction, both for Delhiites and foreigners.

The haat will be supplied with electricity from BYPL Vasundhara Enclave Grid.

LG urged to probe schemes meant for poor
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 22
A BJP delegation today met the Lieutenant Governor, Najeeb Jung, pleading with him to make an inquiry into the schemes launched by the Delhi Government for the poor.

The delegation was led by the Delhi BJP president, Vijay Goel, who said that all the schemes launched for the poor by the city government was just on paper. None of them has been implemented yet.

Goel expressed concern over the way the poor and the residents of JJ clusters have been treated over the last 15 years of the Congress rule. To highlight the issues concerning jhuggi jhompri dwellers, the BJP will organise a massive rally on August 4.

Addressing a press conference after meeting the LG, Goel said, "The issue which we have taken up with the LG is the state of urban poor in the city, especially the JJ clusters. None of the schemes meant for them has delivered any benefit on the ground, so we have demanded a high-level probe into these schemes where money is meant for the poor is being siphoned off."

He said, "From Rajiv Ratan Awas Yojana to the PDS schemes, the resources allocated for the poor are being wasted. The result is visible on the ground with drastic deterioration in the living conditions of the poor."

During the preparations for the Commonwealth Games, thousands of jhuggi dwellers were uprooted without being provided alternative plots. The government had promised to allot a single-room set to each jhuggi dweller, but not a single person has been allotted any flat so far, Goel said.

Man held for killing friend
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 22
A 27-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his friend and then throwing his body in the Yamuna close to two months ago. His accomplices are at large, police said today.

Ripan, alias Dada, a resident of Madanpur Khadar, was arrested yesterday for the murder.

According to the police, Ripan is a bad character of the Jaitpur police station. He was arrested for the first time in a case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act at the Daryaganj police station. His accomplices, Qutub, also a bad character of the Jaitpur police station and Roni are absconding.

On May 31, Lateef Miyan (30) had gone to Madanpur Khadar to meet someone, but never returned. A missing persons report was lodged at the Jamia Nagar police station on the complaint of Miyan's wife. Later, an abduction case was registered at the same police station.

The police started working on the leads. They questioned a few witnesses and their informers were deployed to gather information. Investigators learnt that Ripan was allegedly involved in the murder.

"Ripan has disclosed that he was Lateef Miyan's friend. He said that he fell out with Miyan as he was not returning his Rs 1 lakh taken as a loan. On May 31, Miyan had come to his house and said that he wanted to solve the issue. Ripan then called Qutub and Roni to his house," said Additional Commissioner of Police (South East District) Ajay Chaudhry.

From Ripan's house, they went to the Kalindi Kunj autorickshaw stand on their motorcycles, according to Chaudhry. They purchased 12 bottles of beer from a wine shop, located near the autorickshaw stand, and consumed the liquor on the banks of the river Yamuna. Ripan called Miyan a ‘mukhbir’ and told him that based on his information, the police have learnt about his illegal acts.

" Ripan then smashed empty beer bottles on Miyan's head and strangulated him,” said the officer.
