Estate Office, MC put on notice
Chandigarh, July 18
The Central Excise and Service Tax Department has slapped a notice on the UT Estate Office and the municipal corporation (MC) for non-payment of service tax. The Estate Office has pending dues of Rs 34.31 crore, while the MC is yet to pay Rs 7.53 crore to the department.

Kings XI Punjab, too, under the scanner
Chandigarh, July 18
IPL franchisee KPH Dream, which owns Kings XI Punjab, has come under the scanner of the Central Excise and Service Tax Department for alleged non-payment of service tax. The department has issued a notice to Kings XI Punjab for the "trade" of wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik with Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL season five.

The crime branch of the UT police has arrested a 27-year-old Australia-returned student in a case of theft of luxury cars. The accused belongs to a well-off family settled in the US and had stolen two Fortuner SUVs, both of which have been recovered from his possession.

Mystery shrouds PGI doctor’s death
Chandigarh, July 18
A PGI resident doctor died under mysterious circumstances today. While sources said she died after injecting a dose of a medicine over two weeks ago allegedly in an attempt to commit suicide, that landed her in the ICU, the police said investigations were on to ascertain the exact cause of her death.

Leaving course midway to cost PGI junior docs dear

Resigning from the PGI in the middle of a course is going to cost doctors dear. The institute will increase the penalty on junior residents leaving the course midway.

Around 500 passengers from the region on board the Bharat Darshan train of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) had a harrowing time during the six-day journey to Shirdi from July 13 to 18, as they had to travel in unhygienic conditions and erratic electricity on the coaches.

Simarjit Singh and Raghbir Singh, who allegedly murdered a taxi driver, said a television show gave them the idea to commit the crime. The two allegedly murdered Ram Shromanipal, aka Guddu. The duo was arrested by the Mohali police today.

Wildlife board gives nod to 250-bedded hospital at PGI
Chandigarh, July 18
The State Board for Wildlife (SBWL) in meeting chaired by UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil today in principal approved the wildlife clearance to projects like 250-bedded hospital at PGI, multi-level parking in Sector 17, slum rehabilitation housing scheme in Maloya and CHB housing scheme in Sector 52 and 56.

Hindi poet and lyricist Padma Bhushan Gopal Das Neeraj left the audience spellbound on the opening day of the HIFA's four day cultural bonanza at Punjab Kala Bhawan, Sector 6. Neeraj (88) recited poems, including 'karvaan guzar gaya', 'gubaar dekhte rahe'. Known for his evergreen songs like 'dil aaj shaayar hai' and 'phoolon ke rang se', the poet has maintained a literary touch in his compositions.

Welfare body rues lack of basic amenities
Chandigarh, July 18
The Federation of Sector Welfare Associations Chandigarh (FOSWAC) has shot off a letter to Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde pointing out the failure of the UT Administration in addressing problems faced by residents. FOSWAC chairman PC Sanghi said they had urged the home department to restore the position of Chief Commissioner in Chandigarh in place of Governor-cum-Administrator.

Two snatching incidents were reported in the city today. Sunena Sharma, a resident of Sector 41, said two motorcycle-borne youths snatched her purse near sabzi mandi in Sector 40.

Boys keen on taking up women studies at PU
Chandigarh, July 18
In a reverse trend this year, boys have outnumbered girls in seeking admission in Panjab University's (PU) Department of Women's Studies. For a total of 17 seats in the MA course — conceptualised with the idea of empowering women — 87 boys have applied this year. The number of girls is 83. “The trend indicates the rising interest of boys in feminist studies to diversify their knowledge. Increased job opportunities in national and international NGOs can be the other reason,” said a faculty member.

Mixed response came fromlocal students and PMT teachers over the SC verdict on quashing National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) for the admission in medical colleges across the country.

Traffic awareness campaign
Chandigarh: A traffic awareness campaign was launched in Government Model Senior Secondary School, Karsan, Chandigarh, by the Traffic Police, on Thursday in cooperation with school management committee. In the programme students were informed about the traffic rules and the importance of it in daily life. Useful guidance was provided to the students about pros and cons of traffic rules.

6 of looters’ gang held
Fatehgarh Sahib, July 18
With the arrest of six persons, the district police has claimed to have busted a gang of looters. The police recovered .12 bore pistol, cartridges, iron rods, hammer, knives, duplicate keys, kits to open transformers and other industrial equipments from them. The accused has been identified as Vikas Kumar, Suraj, Pintoo, Manoj Kumar, Rakesh Sharma and Ramesh Kumar, all residents of Bihar.

Drug de-addiction centre sealed
Fatehgarh Sahib, July 18
On the directions of Deputy Commissioner Arun Sekhri, a team of district officials, led by Harjot Kaur, Assistant Commissioner (Grievances), raided on the Anmol Foundation Drug De-addiction Centre at Gunia Majri village on Thursday and sealed the centre. All the inmates were released from the centre and were handed over to the parents.

Two killed, 3 hurt in mishap
Kalka, July 18
Two persons, including a woman, were killed in a head-on collision between a tipper and a truck carrying cement here yesterday. The accident took place near Karanpur village, Pinjore, at around 7.30 pm. The tipper and the truck were badly damaged.

A 19-year-old youngster has been sent to jail for four years for causing death to his father but without any intention to kill, by a local court here today.

The local court has awarded seven-year sentence to Ranjit Singh, alias Topi, the kingpin of the Topi gang, and his accomplice Ramandeep Singh here today.

Couple held in Rs 130 cr fraud case
Chandigarh, July 18
A year after registering a case of fraud amounting to Rs 130 crore, the Economic Offences Wing of the UT police arrested the accused couple, Sukhbir Shergill and his wife Gurbir Shergill, after laying a trap in Bathinda late last night. The two were produced before a court today and remanded in two days' police custody.

2 labourers run over by truck, hurt
Chandigarh, July 18
Two labourers were critically injured after a rashly driven mini-truck ran them over on the road separating Sectors 24 and 15. The injured have been identified as 26-year-old Vinod Kumar and 45-year-old Navi Rassol. They have been admitted to the PGI.

Hard work pays off for Parul

For Parul Gupta, a hearing-impaired tennis player, the world ended on June 30 when officials of the SAI (Sports Authority of India), Delhi, dropped her from the 22nd Deaflympics squad. But her year-long dedication and hard work forced the officials to select her for the 22nd Summer Deaf Olympics games to be held in Sofia (Bulgaria).

Local lads among probables for Indian junior cricket team

Parvesh Sharma and Ramandeep Singh, two local cricketers of Saupin's School, Sector 32, along with three others, have been selected to attend the probable's camp for the Indian junior cricket team for boys (U-16). The camp will be held under the aegis the School National Federation of India (SGFI).

Local wrestler Praveen Dagar made the city proud after securing a place in the junior Indian wrestling team today. The team will participate in the World Junior Wrestling Championship, which will be held in Sofia, Bulgaria, from August 13 to 18.

Swimmer Khushnoor Kaur bagged three medals during the concluding day of the UT State Swimming Championship, organised by the UT Sports Department at the all-weather swimming pool of Sector 23, today. She won the girls' (U-14) 50-mt breast stroke, 50-mt back stroke and 50-mt freestyle events. In the boys' (U-14) event, Roshan Chirag bagged two gold medals in 50-mt back stroke and 50-mt freestyle events.
