Sewage pollutes rivulet in Kharar
Kharar, July 18 As the sewer chokes, sewage gets accumulated on roads , thus making the residents' lives miserable. The worst affected area is Guru Angad Dev Colony. “The sewage has polluted the seasonal rivulet, Jayanti Ki Rao," said a government official. The pipelines were laid by the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board. SDO Deepak Kumar claimed that they had raised objections to the council's officials' decision to give sewerage connections to the residents, but to no avail. The pipelines were laid for managing sewage, but rainwater storm lines were also connected to it, which aggravated the problem, said Deepak Kumar. Work on the project of laying the sewerage lines in the town was started in 2010 and completed in 2012. The amount earmarked for the project was Rs 16 crore. “The process of setting up a sewage treatment plant is under way," said Deepak Kumar. Sources said the board was yet to get funds for the sewage disposal plant. However, the work on the sewage treatment plant had started. “The amount allocated for the project is Rs 13 crore, but so far only Rs 8 crore has been sanctioned," said an official, adding that about 60 per cent of the work had been completed. The residents of Guru Angad Dev Colony lamented that after every rain, sewage got accumulated on the roads, making it difficult for them to commute even. “One can imagine the plight of the residents who are surrounded with sewage. The problem needs to be addressed at the earliest," said Jagjit Singh, a resident of the colony. |
