School bus operators end strike
Ludhiana, July 18
The eight-day-long strike by school van operators came to an end today following an assurance by the Deputy Commissioner that their interests would be taken care of provided they completed their documents. Deputy Commissioner Rahul Tiwari said the school managements should support the van operators. The school bus operators were on strike since July 10 as the District Transport Office had impounded buses of a leading school that were running without valid documents.

3 held for series of snatchings
Ludhiana, July 18
The city police arrested three persons allegedly involved in a number of snatching incidents. ACP (North) J Elanchezhian said Mohit and Gaurav Taneja, who were arrested yesterday with a stolen motorcycle, turned out notorious criminals. SHO, Division No 4 police station, Vinod Kumar said the accused were involved in 90 snatching incidents that took place in different parts of the city, including the PAU, Civil Lines, Sarabha Nagar, BRS Nagar, Udham Singh Nagar, Moti Nagar and Upkar Nagar.

Khaki did the trick for Gur Arpan
Ludhiana, July 18
The fear of khaki did the trick for Gur Arpan and his accomplices, who kidnapped industrialist Manish Bharara and his driver Hem Raj on July 13. The kidnapping of Manish was no secret for the workers of his factory. They witnessed the entire episode like mute spectators.

Absconding robber shot dead
Ludhiana, July 18
A person who tried to rob a jeweller at gunpoint yesterday was found shot dead at Subhash Nagar in Basti Jodhewal today. Vinay Singh (22), a resident of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, was on the run after an alert goldsmith foiled a robbery bid on Rahon Road.

Foreign students get a taste of Punjabi hospitality

Industrial body demands setting up of auto park in city
Ludhiana, July 18
Automotive parts and auto companies have demanded a separate policy for proper growth and development of the sector. Avtar Singh, general secretary, Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertaking, in a statement issued today said that despite of the fact that there was good demand for trucks, cars and two-wheelers due to high per capita income, no original equipment manufacturing (OEM) plant had been set up in Punjab.

Miraculous escape for 25 students on Hambran Road

‘It’s tough to make out the real cops’
Ludhiana, July 18
Anyone wearing a khaki uniform is not a policeman. The July 13 kidnapping incident where six men posing as policemen kidnapped industrialist Manish Bharara proved that. "Who should we trust? when kidnappers wear khaki uniforms, the real policemen arrived at my eatery in plain cloths," said Hardeep Singh, a dhaba owner reflecting the sentiments of area residents following the kidnapping incident on National Highway I, near Doraha.

Calls were made from different locations to hoodwink police

"I am kidnapped," was the first message that accused Gur Arpan had sent from Morinda on Manish Bharara's mobile phone. Sources said that after kidnapping Manish Bharara and his driver Hem Raj, Gur Arpan switched off their mobile phones and took them to his (Gur Arpan’s )farmhouse in Khatra village near Khanna.

2 booked for kidnapping woman

The city police has booked two brothers for kidnapping a 22-year-old woman on the pretext of offering her a job. The accused have been identified as Santosh Kumar and Shiv Poojan, residents of New Partap Nagar, Haibowal Kalan.

After six years on the run, PO held

The Jagraon police has arrested a proclaimed offender on the run for the past six years. The accused, Rakesh Kumar, alias Meshi, of Raikot, was booked in an illegal liquor seizure case in May 2007.

I-T Dept employee charged with fraud

A computer operator at the Income Tax office was allegedly found issuing fake income tax refunds in her and her family's name. Sources in the department revealed that since she was aware of the passwords of the Income Tax officers, she accessed the logins and issued refunds worth Rs 89,000.
