Amritsar
BSF recovers  8 kg of heroin
: The BSF has seized 8 kg of heroin from near Wadhai Cheema border outpost falling in the Amritsar sector. The contraband was wrapped in a piece of cloth and was found lying 10 metres inside the barbed fence on the Indian side. With this seizure, the BSF has already recovered 157 kg of heroin this year. BSF Inspector-General Aditya Mishra said surveillance had been increased in the area in view of the regular attempts by Pakistan-based smugglers to push narcotics into the Indian territory.

2 PCR cops suspended:
Two cops deployed with the PCR No. 9 — Devraj and Amrinder Singh — were suspended for dereliction of duty. During a checking on Wednesday night, DSP (Rural) Desraj Singh caught one of them napping and the other playing a game on mobile phone while being on duty.

SP suspended for abetting suicide
: The state government on Thursday placed the services of Mohan Lal, Superintendent of Police, under suspension. The officer was arrested on the charge of abetment to suicide. An official spokesperson said the suspension order of the officer had been issued after his arrest in the case of abetment to suicide of Lovepreet Kaur, who had allegedly jumped off the SP’s rented apartment in Zirakpur.

Rs 3.83 cr spent under MNREGA
: The district administration has spent Rs 3.83 crore under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme (MGNREGA) and provided 32,479 days of employment to 2,033 families. Deputy Commissioner Arun Sekhri stated this at a meeting of the District Vigilance Monitoring Committee held here on Thursday. The meeting was called to review the progress of various central sponsored schemes in the district. MP Sukhdev Singh Libra presided over the meeting.

Student stabbed  by classmate
: A Class XII student of Government Senior Secondary School at Dhade Fateh Singh village was seriously injured after being allegedly stabbed by a classmate with a knife on Thursday. The victim, Kuldip Singh, has been admitted to Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana, where his condition was stated critical. An old enmity is stated to be the reason behind the crime.

Drug peddlers held
: The local police has arrested two drug peddlers and seized 1kg of opium from their possession in two separate incidents.
The accused have been identified as Rajvir Singh, alias Raju of Kalpura village, Rajasthan, and Sarabjit Singh of Barwat village, Rajasthan.

Moga
Moga man shot dead in Manila
: Jagroop Singh, 48, hailing from Daudhar village in Moga, was allegedly shot dead at Manila in the Philippines this morning. Jagroop was on his way to work when two motorcycle-borne men wearing helmets shot him from close range. A monetary row is believed be the reason behind the crime. The deceased is survived by his wife, son and daughter. He had visited India 18 months back to make arrangements for the marriage ceremony of his son. The victim’s family has sought Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s help for bringing the body to India.

DRME seeks report from hospital:
Dr Tejveer Singh, Director Research and Medical Education (DRME), Punjab, has sought an explanation from Rajindra Hospital authorities as to why expired and rotten medicines were recovered from the medical store of its ward no. 1 two days ago. The DRME has directed the authorities to submit a report on the matter at the earliest and maintain a proper record of medicines. Dr Singh also instructed the hospital authorities to ensure that no medicines expire in future.

Janak Raj, a resident of Pehowa, was killed on the spot when a truck hit him near DAV College, Pehowa, 20 km from here, yesterday. The police has registered a case.

Pharmacist booked for abusing woman:
Sweeper Kamla Devi at the Community Health Centre, Dehar, accused pharmacist Ramesh Gupta of thrashing her and abusing her. The police has registered a case under Sections 353, 332, 506, IPC and 3(1)(X) of the SC&ST Act at police station, Sundernagar, on her complaint.
