Girl dies in freak accident
Ludhiana, July 11
The death of a 17-year-old medical student, who died in a freak accident last morning, has left her family and friends shocked. The victim, Mansimran Kaur, a resident of Model Town, was electrocuted after she fell off her scooter and came in contact with the power cables laid outside a house.

Students’ hard work in vain

Corporation, too, gets tough on unauthorised colonies
Ludhiana, July 11
After the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority had put on notice some 1,750 developers of unauthorised colonies asking them to get their colonies compounded and regularised under the new policy formulated by the Government of Punjab, the Municipal Corporation today initiated a similar exercise for unlicensed colonies located within the city limits.

Notorious criminal, accomplice arrested
Ludhiana, July 11
The city has nabbed Tajinder Singh Teja, a notorious criminal, and his accomplice, Mandeep Singh Deepi of Morinda, who had snatched a pistol by throwing red chilli powder in a policemman’s eyes at Aaarti Chowk on June 22.

Tomato prices leave people red-faced
Ludhiana, July 11
Owing to snapped road links due incessant rains, tomatoes are reaching here in less supplies. Their prices have increased up to Rs 90 or Rs 100 per kg, which generally hover around Rs 20 or Rs 25 per kg. However, the demand for tomato purees has risen in the market. "It has become impossible to buy tomatoes these days as these are an essential ingredient in the Indian food.

Railway station hospital sans ambulance
Ludhiana, July 11
The hospital at the railway station does not have an ambulance. The hospital also lacks basic facilities. Earlier, the hospital had three ambulances, but a few years ago the authorities started hiring vehicles.

Residents come out in support of sarpanch, constable
Ludhiana, July 11
A day after the police booked five persons for raping a 13-year-old Dalit girl from Heeran village near Chandigarh Road, residents of Ahluwalia Colony near Jamalpur gathered outside the division number 7 police station in support of a sarpanch and a police constable whose names have also cropped up in the case.

Parking shortage at hospitals leads to chaos

Inadequate parking space on the premises of private hospitals has become a bane of the city. In the absence of space, those visiting the hospitals park vehicles outside houses. Heated arguments between the visitors and house owners have become a routine affair.

PSPCL employees vent ire
Ludhiana, July 11

DTO releases 12 school buses
Ludhiana, July 11
Providing relief to operators, who refused to ply school buses yesterday, District Transport Officer Anil Garg today released 12 buses. The DTO said the remaining buses could not be released until the school authorities took the responsibility and procured the permit in their name.

Differences among members hit tool industry hard

Failure to resolve personal differences among the members of machine tool cluster has had a negative effect on the overall development and progress of the industry. 5 firms to manage e-waste
Ludhiana, July 11
The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has authorised five firms in the state for the collection and disposal of hazardous electronic waste. The Punjab Government has launched a special scheme.

Pool party
Ludhiana: Green Land Senior Secondary Public School, Jalandhar bypass, organised a ‘Pool Party’ for the tiny-tots to beat the heat. The students partied throughout the day. The children enjoyed splashing water in the pool. The pool was decorated with colourful balls, toys and umbrellas.

Cong condemns govt policy
Ludhiana: District Congress Committee (Urban) president Pawan Dewan has strongly condemned the new policy of the state government for colonisers and property developers. Addressing a meeting of the party’s block presidents at the Congress Bhawan on Thursday, he said a new policy framed by the state government encourages bureaucracy and corruption.

Councillors Gora, Bhola released
Ludhiana, July 11
Two independent councillors of Ward Number 7 and 8, Gurpreet Singh alias Gora and Daljit Singh Grewal alias Bhola, were released from the Central Jail today. Both the councillors and their aides were booked by the police following a clash with the supporters of SAD and MLA Ranjit Singh Dhillon.

Sarpanch booked for molesting minor girl
Jagraon, July 11
A day after the residents of Kothe Fatehdeen village located on the outskirts of Jagraon staged a dharna outside the office of the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Jagraon, seeking action against a newly elected sarpanch for allegedly molesting a minor girl, the local police finally booked the sarpanch on charge of molesting a minor girl today.

Woman beaten up for ‘dowry’
Amloh, July 11
A resident of Ward No 8, Sandeep Kaur, has been admitted to the Civil Hospital after her husband and in-laws beat her up for not bringing enough dowry. Victim’s father, Amarjit Singh, in his complaint to the police said her daughter got married to Sarwan Singh alias Soni seven years ago and had given birth to a baby boy four years ago.

2 robbers nabbed
Mandi Ahmedgarh, July 11
The Dehlon police has nabbed two members of a gang who had been robbing occupants of trucks and tempos after waylaying them. A motorcycle and crude weapons were recovered from their possession. The accused were identified as Mohammad Rafi of Naushera and Shehbaz Khatika of Malerkotla.

City boy makes it to Asian School Cricket Meet
Ludhiana, July 11
Nipun Dogra, a budding cricketer, has made it to the Asian School Cricket Tournament in the U-16 category. The camp for the tournament will be held in Jaipur from July 26. A student of Government Senior Secondary Modal School, Punjab Agricultural University, Nipun is popular as 'Run Machine'.
