Ambala, July 11 The jail authorities had received information that some mobile phones were hidden on the jail premises. Following a search drive, the phones were found hidden underground. In the past two months, over 10 mobile phones have been recovered from the jail premises, and three cases have been registered. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had directed the State Government to install a jammer and CCTV cameras in the jail. According to sources, the jail authorities had written a number of letters to senior officers, but all requests fell on deaf ears. One of the retired jail officers said Ambala Central Jail said the use of cell phones could not be stopped till a jammer was installed there. |

Sanitation workers end strike in Ropar
Ropar, July 11 These workers had declared an indefinite strike on July 5, demanding regular services for 112 sweepers employed on contractual basis. In a meeting held between protesting leaders, municipal councillors and municipal council executive officer Ashok Kumar in the evening, it was decided that the civic body would make efforts to give regular jobs to 22 sanitation workers. Councillor Paramjit Singh Makkar said the state government had formulated a policy in 2011 under which it was decided to regularise jobs of such sanitation workers who had been working with mohalla sanitation committees up to April 2008, and had continued working till the formulation of the policy. In Ropar, these committees were dissolved in the end of February 2008, but 22 workers were re-employed in April 2008. The municipal council has agreed to take up the issue of these 22 workers and get their services regularised by August 5, said EO Ashok Kumar. |

Two drug peddlers arrested in Fatehgarh Sahib
Fatehgarh Sahib, July 11 The police said one of the accused was nabbed at a checkpoint set up at Manheri Jattan T-point. He was identified as Paramjit Singh, alias Bittoo, a resident of Hamayunpur, Sirhind. As many as 4,000 tablets were recovered from his possession. Another accused, Kulbir Singh, a resident of Kotla Bajwara village, was arrested with 1,000 tablets and capsules. Both the accused have been booked under the NDPS Act. |
Chargesheet filed in SBI manager’s suicide case
Chandigarh, July 11 Sanjeev Singla, a resident of Phase 1, Mohali, had allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan of a bathroom at his SCF17-18 in Sector 22 on March 20 this year. The police recovered a six-page suicide note from the spot, which stated that his family members had forced him to take the extreme step. The police has filed a chargesheet against his brother, Rajiv Singla, his brother's wife, Anita Singla, their son, Chirag Singla, and mother Indira Rani. The victim had stated in the suicide note that he was being harassed by his family members in the civil cases pending in the court against him. As per the chargesheet, there was a property dispute within the family and the victim was also named in a case of cheating registered by his family members against him. The chargesheet has been filed under Sections of abetment to suicide under Section 306 of the IPC. |

Mohali, July 11 The local SGPC member Bhai Hardeep Singh had approached the High Court to quash the notification, dated December 22, 2010, and August 25, 2011, of land acquisition of the gurdwara land (around 23 acres), which was donated by some devotee for religious purposes. “The High Court today admitted the writ petition in this regard and directed the authorities concerned to file their reply on August 19,” said Bhai Hardeep Singh. “As the land was donated for religious purposes, it can only be used for construction of some hospital or medical college or other such institution,” said the petitioner. Bhai Hardeep Singh alleged that the land in question now belongs to SGPC but the committee’s role was also objectionable in the case as it had not filed any objection to the notices issued by GMADA. |

Labour Dept employee caught taking bribe
Chandigarh, July 11 The bribe was being demanded in order to cancel the transfer of complainant Rajbir Singh. Rajbir Singh stated to the police that his brother died a martyr’s death in the Kargil War. He was appointed as a clerk in the office of Labour Department on compassionate ground and got promotion as an Assistant in the Labour Department (Haryana), Chandigarh. The complainant added that Sapra was demanding Rs 5,000 to cancel his transfer from Rewari to Chandigarh. The bribe money was recovered from the possession of the accused and seized by the Vigilance team on the spot in the office of Labour Department Haryana at Sector 17, Chandigarh. Sapra, a resident of Naya Gaon, Mohali, Punjab, has been arrested in the case. — TNS |

Woman ends life
Mohali, July 11 The police said the deceased, Rajdeep Kaur, was suffering from depression. Rajdeep’s grandfather, Chanchal Mohan Singh, said that she got married to a UK citizen around 15 years ago. “After her divorce, she was again married in January this year to a person living in the USA. Her parents too have been living in the USA for the past 22 years,” he said. Rajdeep was living alone here. No suicide note was found. Three booked for thrashing woman
Chandigarh: The police has registered a case
of causing hurt and criminal intimidation against three persons. A Sector 15 resident had alleged that the trio had thrashed and threatened her on July 10. The complainant, Savita Ahluwalia, told the police that Rohanjit Singh, alias Amit, along with his friends forcibly entered her house and misbehaved with her. She alleged that the three also hit her. The police said Savita and Rohanjit were related to each other and a

21 special children leave for national camp in Chennai
Chandigarh, July 11 A 21-member contingent of these special children left for Chennai to attend a preparatory coaching camp, here today. The contingent will nurture their skills ahead of their Asia Pacific Regional International Meet, schedule to be held in Australia from first week of December. These players were selected under the aegis of the Bharat Special Olympics Association (Chandigarh Chapter). A total of 21-players in various events, including athletics, cricket, table tennis, were selected to nurture their skills in this preparatory camp. “We are very happy that our children are getting the same exposure like other players. All they need is motivation,” said Paramjeet, mother of a player. Another parent, added, “My son has been playing table tennis for the past three years. He has done well throughout the year. The participation in Australia will be his maiden international tourney and I want him to bag some titles. These kinds of preparatory camps will surely help them in winning confidence,” said Dilpreet Kaur. “For these special children to behave and win laurels like other normal players is not an easy task. It takes a long effort and the Chennai camp is a part of this long journey,” said Neelu Sareen, Area Director, Bharat Special Olympics Association. |

Chandigarh, July 11 In the semifinals of boys (U-14) event, the team of DAV School, Sector 8, defeated Government Model High School, Sector 26, (Police Lines) via tie-breaker at 4-3. The match was sealed at 1-1 in the stipulated time. Rehman put the DAV team ahead with a brace in the 8th minute but Abhijeet levelled the score in the 34th minute. In the tie-breaker play, Rahul Chetri, Rehmaan and Rohit scored for the winning side whereas Abhijeet and Nadeen were the only goal scorers for losing side. In the second match, the team of Government Model high School, Sector 36, drubbed Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, by 3-0.
