BEHIND THE LENS: Amrit Sagar Chopra

A big Punjabi wedding in winter of Delhi makes the backdrop for the upcoming romantic comedy Rabba Main Kya Karun. Seven days of fun, frolic and more is what the movie offers!

Coming from Moti Sagar Productions, this film has Amrit Sagar Chopra (grandson of Ramanand Sagar) for director and his younger brother Akash Sagar Chopra as the lead. The family connections did not help Akash much though! Says Amrit, “Akash has been active in theatre for four years. Yet, I did not okay him for this role based on his theatre experience. I watched Akash in Sapne Chuttan Dube Ke, a solo play in which he enacts many roles, which really impressed me. Akash asked, ‘Was it a good enough audition’ and I said the final yes!”

The movie has a huge cast, including Arshad Warsi, Paresh Rawal, Raj Babbar, Shakti Kapoor, Riya Sen, Himani Shivpuri and Tinu Anand. “As it is a wedding story, we have more than twenty characters that are part of the film. Bringing each character alive was the biggest challenge,” says Amrit, who shot the film in Delhi.

Moti Sagar Chopra is the producer of the film and he was mulling over the story idea for a long time, which was taken ahead and written by son Amrit and co-writer Aakash Kaushik. As the protagonist (played by Akash Sagar) gets ready to marry his childhood sweetheart, his cousin played by Arshad Warsi plants the idea in his head that for a happy married life one must cheat on the wife.

Everything goes wrong as the devil’s advocate Arshad takes charge; expect it to be a laughter riot. “I would call it a comedy romantic,” says Amrit whose last directorial venture 1971 fetched him a national award.

He practically grew up on his grandfather’s movie sets and started his innings in filmdom when he was just sixteen. What followed was a course in filmmaking from California College of Arts. How did the two divergent experiences shape him? “You learn to make a film on the sets, however, academic training prepares you in a different manner; it makes you approach the film in a different manner altogether,” says Amrit.

Direction is what he loves, be it movies or soaps (read Hatim, Hotel Kingston, Prithviraj Chauhan, Jai Shri Krishna, Meera, Rakhi Ka Insaaf). Totally occupied giving final touches to Rabba Main Kya Karun, which releases on August 2, Amrit is looking forward to a break. Soon after the release, he is heading to Hardwar for a few weeks to give his bit to the calamity-stricken Uttarakhand!

Great inspiration

Amrit Sagar Chopra found inspiration at home to begin with. Ramanand Sagar earned name, honour and awards as writer, director, producer for his films as did his son Moti Sagar. Charas, Aankhen, Arzoo and Barsaat are a few films, but the iconic series Ramayan received a phenomenal response. Ask Amrit on what he found most inspiring about his grandfather and he says, “It was my dad and grandfather’s courage. They experimented in all genres, different mediums and had it in them to keep going from one milestone to another.” Outside the family, Amrit looks up to David Lean, Akira Kurosawa, Christopher Nolan, Steven Allan Spielberg, “In fact, the list of filmmakers I am inspired by is almost endless.”

Waist wonder
The short ruffle around the waist-line is making a wave on the ramp as also the red carpet events. Peplum dresses sure rock…

Ever since Scarlett Johansson embraced the waist clinching ruffles at the European Premiere of Marvel Avengers, there was no stopping the trend. The red and blue costume by Prada put the spotlight firmly on peplum dresses. A year before, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan may not have got many things right at the Cannes red carpet, but she certainly didn't get it wrong in Elie Saab gown with peplum detailing. Earlier this year, Karisma Kapoor had the fashion circles nodding on her scarlet peplum dress by Gauri and Nainika at the opening of a toy store in the capital.

Undeniably, the short ruffle attached at the waist line has got its fair share of limelight; right from the runways to the red carpet. "Peplum dresses are really a fashion statement of the season. That's because of the fact that they lend a certain grace to the wearer and are very lady-like. They look classy too," says Sonal Manik, from the label Sanskriti and Lady Couture.

When the likes of Dakota Fanning and Blake Lively sport a trend, there's an endorsement to things being super-trendy, posh and put-together. Closer home, actress Parineeta Chopra, Malaika Arora Khan and Preity Zinta have been spotted wearing one, and designer Falguni and Shane Peacock's spring summer 2013 collection was all about digital prints, metallic fabrics and modern peplum silhouettes. Shares Daphy Brar, faculty, University Institute of Fashion Technology, Panjab University, "One of the biggest advantages of wearing a peplum dress is that it highlights the waist." The fact that it puts the spotlight firmly on the waist is also a reason for several shying away from the silhouette.

"If you are shy of wearing a peplum dress then one should start by wearing it in monochromatic colours. Ideally, a black peplum dress fabulously flatters the curves without drawing too much attention," opines Garima Chawla, fashion design student, Chandigarh. She adds, "But peplum dresses are strictly a formal and evening wear. And the sturdier the fabric in which they are made, the better the fall of the ruffles."

From selecting the right shade to getting the desired shape, several things need to fall in place before you are ready to put the best foot forward. Nods Daphy, "Peplum is very tricky in certain ways. You have to get the pattern, the stitching and the entire structure of the garment right." This is one of the instances where the wrong fit can be fatal to the garment. That's not where the dos and don'ts end. "Not everyone can carry off a peplum dress. You have to be super-confident of your look and what you are wearing."

Warns Sonal, "Peplum dresses generally look good only on slim people. Since they highlight the waist, people with heavy curves should avoid wearing them." She adds, "Peplums are not understated garments so they go very well in pastels or evergreen colours like blacks and red." Nevertheless, the hard and fast rules never apply. Earlier this year, Kim Kardashian proudly showed off her baby bump in a tight black peplum dress during a glam photo-shoot.

Soul connection
For singer-actor Roshan Prince, singing comes before anything
Jasmine Singh

A smile that will put you at ease, a voice that will soothe you from within, an attitude that reads simplicity, singer-actor Roshan Prince has been blessed with not only a melodious and ‘rocking’ voice, but also charm and good looks. As an actor he will soon be seen in his upcoming projects Naughty Jatts, Fer Maamla Gadbad Gadbad and Ishq Brandy.

As a singer he never fails to sway you along. He takes a while to warm up to people but once he does, this trained singer opens his heart and soul. Roshan gained popularity after winning the first season of Punjabi music reality show, Awaaz Punjab Di.

Singing above all

Singing is my first love and I will always remain a singer. Music is my soul food. Acting is something that I am trying my hand on and I hope the audience will accept me.

Training is important

One is always born with an art, and training refines that. I am a trained singer. I did my MA in music (vocal) from Delhi. I stayed with my guru for almost eight years and learnt the nuances of singing. These days singers don’t believe in training, they don’t give it that much importance. However, I think without training, an artiste is incomplete.

Rooted to riyaaz

I come from a family of creative people. If I don’t do riyaaz, my father will pull my ears. I am attached to music and I can’t go far from it.

Style file

Earlier, we would listen to the voice of the singer, now he or she is expected to be seen. This is why they are expected to be well turned out with the right kind of clothes and hair style. After all, everyone is looking up the singers on youtube and following them on Facebook.

Work is worship

Nothing succeeds like hard work. My family has taught me the value of hard work. This holds true for singing and acting both. It was my hard work that paid in Sirphire and it is with this hard work that I plan to win the audiences in my upcoming movie Fir Maamla Gadbad Gadbad.

I look up to

My guru Prof Shamshad Ali who taught me everything. When I was young, I would listen to Hans Raj Hans, in fact after a while people could see a reflection of his style in my work. Later, my guru helped me form my own style of singing, which is going on till date.

Digitally yours

Technology has changed the way music is created. It is difficult to distinguish a singer’s voice quality. But this is only a short cut. Only those who have worked on their voice, trained with a teacher, will survive in the long run.

GET PHYSICAL
Balancing act
How to balance strength and cardiovascular training
Vishal Thukral

Strength and cardiovascular training methods are often at odds. Most people simply don't know how to incorporate both strength and cardiovascular training into their schedule and favour the one they enjoy the most. Cardio and strength training have to be balanced properly. Some people who hope to slim down avoid lifting weights, because they are afraid it will make them too bulky. On the other hand, weightlifters who are looking for bulk, tend to fear that cardio burns muscles.

The right path

First, it has to be decided whether the focus is to lose weight or gain muscle. Trying to do both at the same time will slow the progress. At the same time, it may even lead to training injuries. Again, this does not mean that you are choosing one training method over the other. The key here is to make them work together. The other important factor here is you need to consider your body type. Is it easy for you to lose weight or does it feel like a constant struggle?

Your body's natural tendencies will have a strong bearing on the selection of the workout plan. For example, an endomorph, someone who is natural heavy set, will need to schedule more cardio days to lose weight, but will find it easy to gain muscle. Balance is the key to mixing both cardio and strength training. When scheduled properly, they help tremendously to reach the fitness goals.

Five-day plan

A good balance between cardio and strength training only requires five days of exercises in a week. If you plan the workouts as described below, then the weekend is yours to have fun.

Day 1: Choose from the following exercises that will provide high intensity lower body cardio--running, bicycling or step aerobics. Do it for 25-30 minutes. Remember to stretch and warm up before and after your main workout.

Day 2: The first strength training workout of the week may focus on the upper body— arms, shoulders, chest and back. In the gym, simply visit each of the machines that are designed to target these areas. Choose a weight setting that is comfortable for you - too low settings will result in cardio like workout and too high settings will make your arms sore for a longer period of time. Perform 8-12 repetitions on each machine. Focus on only the four areas of the upper body and leave the abs and legs for the end of the week strength training session.

Day 3: Engage in a low cardio session which is just as beneficial as high cardio. It means the session have to be performed for longer period of time. Extended long walk mixed with light jog may be the good option on day three.

Day 4: The second strength training workout of the week may be focused on the lower body: glutes and legs. Choose a weight setting that is comfortable for you. Remember to begin the workout session with a warm up and stretching period. Stretching and cool down activities should also be performed at the of the strength training. Perform 8-12 repetitions on each of the machines designed for the lower body strength training.

Day 5: At the end of the week, focus on the cardio which may include abs workout. Choose from the following exercises that will provide high intensity workout— rowing or sprinting. Engage in your choice of exercise for minimum 35-40 minutes.

The above workouts can also be performed in a number of different sequences. Simply listen to your body and determine what combination works best for you.

Diet tip

Daily intake of beetroot can provide health benefits. It contains a host of nutritional compounds. It can be consumed easily either cooked or, raw in salad or in the form of juice. It is an antioxidant.

TROUBLE SHOOTER
Talk it out
Simmi Waraich

I am a 24 year old girl. I was adopted by my parents but they give me a lot of love and affection. My brother is 8 yrs younger than me. I get easily dependent on people and I got married to a man who is from a much lower social status. He has not been working and my parents were supporting us. He also gets angry and abusive with me and tells me now that he does not want to be with me. I get very upset and feel that I can't live without him. My parents have told me to decide but I feel very helpless and get thoughts of dying. I was told by a doctor that I have borderline personality and that I will have problems till I am 40.

Shilpa, chandigarh

As long as you are aware of your problems, you can work on them. You said you feel strongly about things and get dependent on people. Some people have a fear of abandonment and so even when they know that a relationship is not working out, they still do not move on. Basically you need to see what you want from your relationship. What is he giving you? Is he someone you can depend on? Get help by talking to someone regularly till you are able to put things behind you. Borderline personality is just a name given to a set of symptoms like feelings of emptiness, fear of abandonment, mood swings and at times attempts to hurt oneself. However, the severity varies and many people can learn to manage their feelings by understanding that the feelings are temporary. Learning yogic breathing or meditation helps too but see a regular therapist. Understanding your problem is the first step to conquering this problem. It is not necessary that you will start living only after 40 yrs of age. It depends on you.

I have been diagnosed with depression after my children were born. I feel my mother always had depression and I was a quiet child. We were not allowed to do a lot of things that other kids were allowed to do. I feel guilty as I feel I was not such a good mother.

Navneet, Mohali

Depression is an illness which may occur because of genetic reasons or sometimes because of environmental factors. Just like asthma which may occur in anyone, depression may occur in anyone too. Just as one can avoid triggers of asthma, similarly one can avoid triggers of depression.

So avoid stress which means that understand what causes you stress. Just as in diabetes, one is supposed to avoid sweets, in depression, one is supposed to avoid stressors. If you feel you are a bad mother, you may be magnifying your weaknesses and expecting yourself to be like a friend or a sister etc. Avoid comparing yourself with others. Mothering is a process. Identify what you feel you could do more as a mother and what are the things you already do. In the past, mothers may not have spent so much time with children as mothers are doing now.

So, be kind to yourself first. In depression we tend to think negatively and jump to the worst conclusions, so your negative thoughts may be due to the depression. Get regular counselling and learn to change the thoughts to more realistic ones.

Shahid Kapoor hits the gym...
Shahid has been rigorously working on his body for the last six months and has also been following a strict diet regime.

Action replay: Shahid Kapoor The IIFA, this year, has been hosted by Bollywood’s most cherished heroes; Shahid Kapoor and Shah Rukh Khan. We tell you a little about how Shahid got ready. While this may sound amusing to many, Shahid, who is quite dedicated to his fitness routine, also requested his trainer, Abbas Ali to travel with him.

Our sources revealed that Shahid has been rigorously working on his body for the last 6 months and has also been following a strict diet regime. Although the young actor will be in Macau only for 5 days, he could not miss his workouts. This means his days at IIFA will be chaotic.

In fact, while he was in Mumbai, Shahid was juggling many things. He was shooting for Rambo Rajkumar, rehearsing for IIFA and even then made time to hit the gym. His trainer, Abbas Ali confirmed, "Shahid is dedicated and extremely focused.

Abbas posted a picture of Shahid sans a T-shirt, last month which received a lot of attention. His physique currently is chiseled and the result of an uncompromising workout routine. This year around, Shahid is going to be seen performing some hard-core action sequences in films like Phata Poster Nikhla Hero and Rambo Rajkumar.

Getting to know Rhea Kapoor

Talking point: Rhea Kapoor Rhea Kapoor is producing the remake of Khoobsoorat. She talks about the movie and her sister Sonam's new-found success.

Remakes galore

I am very confident about the remake of Khoobsoorat and I am aware that several remakes have not done well. I will not take away the soul of the movie. I know that a remake can be a tricky business. I have to adapt it to today's audience and yet not make something completely different because then I will fall flat on my face. Of course, destiny has a role to play too.

On Sonam Kapoor

Shashank Ghosh is the director of the remake. We were talking films and his eyes lit up when I mentioned the remake of Khoobsoorat. Sonam is our in-house Rekha and she was a natural choice because she is full of life, bubbly, yet strong, opinionated, and feisty. Her personality dictated our choice. She has even met Rekha and taken her blessings for the movie.

Success of Raanjhanna

Success is always sweet and Sonam is indeed very happy and content and smiling even more and widely. She did something different in Raanjhanna and it worked and we are so happy for her. She worked super hard and her efforts have paid off so she deserves her moment of glory. She is more confident about her future now.

The highs and lows

Sonam and I have seen the highs and lows of cinema and stardom. We are very grounded and confident and do not get carried away when we succeed or bogged down when things do not turn out well. We also have lives beyond movies.

Twist in the tale

We have made a few changes in the remake. The point of conflict is not between the heroine and hero's mother but between the lead couple. Also, Sonam will not play a fresh graduate. She is playing a physiotherapist who works with IPL cricketers. We are looking for a fresh face for the hero and have short listed a few names and will make an official announcement soon.

Vir Das is ‘Stupid’!

What next: Vir Das Vir Das has been on a roll with his last two films, Delhi Belly (2011) and Go Goa Gone (2013) being successful. The actor has positioned himself as someone who plays wacky characters on-screen.

The talented actor is all set to turn a writer as well as a producer, for his next film, which would be a collaborative project with filmmaker Nikhil Advani. Their respective production companies, Weirdass Productions and Emmay Entertainment, have teamed up to produce, what Vir calls a "high concept comedy." Talking about the collaboration, Nikhil explained, "It all happened over breakfast. I wanted to rope in Vir to feature in the video of the song, Duma Dum (D-Day) because I loved the way he danced in Jaa Chudail (Delhi Belly). So he came in, heard the song, loved it but said that he didn't have dates." After that, the duo discussed three scripts in a span of one and a half hour. Recounting the meeting, Nikhil recalled, "He told me that while one is crazy, another is mad and the third one is stupid. I am amazed how he comes up with such crazy ideas." He further said, "As of now we are going ahead with the "stupid" story."

From the grapevine…

Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif might be paired together, once again after Ek Tha Tiger, in Sooraj Barjatya's upcoming film, which will go on the floors next year. It is always interesting to see ex-lovers working with each other. Officially, the heroine has not been finalised and the details are being worked out.

Meanwhile, Katrina Kaif has been working hard despite her ill health. She was resting at home but had to report on the sets of Dhoom 3 at YRF Studios because Aamir Khan had already given his dates and she did not want his dates to be wasted. She fell ill with viral fever due to hectic work schedules.

A nostalgic trip

Dancing pair: A still from Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa When Shah Rukh Khan made a promotional guest appearance on hit television show, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, the viewers got a rare glimpse of the Chennai Express actor's crackling chemistry with one of his former co-star.

Dancing pair: A still from Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa

Madhuri Dixit, one of the judges of the show, has starred opposite SRK in films like Anjaam, Dil Toh Pagal Hai and Devdas. So, when it was time to revisit some of their magical filmi moments together, the pair didn't disappoint their fans.

The former co-stars recreated one of the most memorable romantic sequences from Yash Chopra's 1997 musical blockbuster Dil Toh Pagal Hai on the show. And they seemed to be quite relaxed in each others company.

Both, Madhuri and Shah Rukh also danced on the Bollywood moves. While SRK looked dapper in his suit, Madhuri looked resplendent in her sky blue Shehlaa lehenga.

This episode will be telecast on Colors this weekend. Stay tuned!

Deepika too was the centre of attention of all the men in the audience, especially a six-month old, Maher, who made her grin from ear to ear!

Sure & secure: Hiten Tejwani Secure in his position and talent, Hiten Tejwani is not affected about having to play the role of a husband and a grandfather to his co-star, Ankita Lokhande. He feels that an actor should try his hand at all kinds of roles.

Sure & secure: Hiten Tejwani

What do you have to say about Ankita Lokhande’s double role (reportedly) in the show?

Even I have heard the same thing, but I do not have a clue about the double role. I have not had a meeting with creative team, so don’t know what’s happening.

Are you fine with Ankita essaying a double role?

Why should I have a problem with that? If the story is going in that direction, then I am totally fine with it.

While other actors refrain from taking up older roles, why did you opt for it?

People know me as Hiten and they know my age. So, doing an older role would not make me a different person. When actors play older roles in films, it does not hamper their career, so I don’t see any reason why one should dread playing older roles on TV.

Are you doing a film with Akshay Kumar?

Yes, I have finished my portion of shoot while the rest of the team is currently shooting in Bangkok. It was fun to be a part of the film.

What happened to the film Imandari Ki Ma Ki Aankh, in which you were playing the lead role?

Well, unfortunately, that film was stalled because of some reasons.
