Panchkula will get its first Mayor tomorrow. The elections for the post of Mayor of the Panchkula Municipal Corporation will be held at the conference hall of the Mini-Secretariat in Sector 1 here. The newly elected 20 councillors of the corporation will also take oath tomorrow.

HC refuses to stay poll

Learning no lesson from three incidents of fire in low-floor buses reported in the last six months, the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) is still in a deep slumber. It has failed to propose any action plan for passengers' safety.

Chandigarh, July 3
Two illegal factories, which had come up on government land in the Industrial Area, Phase II, were demolished today during a joint drive of the UT Estate Office and the Municipal Corporation. The Estate Office officials said a furniture showroom was running on the government land and power generator sets were dumped on a vacant plot, which were removed during the drive.

Enthusiasm marked the panchayat poll in the district today. Rural folk were so enthusiastic that several started coming to polling booths early in the morning.

Taking up issue of encroachments on government land with the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority, members of the Mohali Citizen Welfare and Development Forum, a body consisting 34 resident welfare associations of the town, demand immediate survey to detect such encroachments and action against the hazard.

Inquiry hits roadblock as student fails to appear before panel

The inquiry by the committee formed into the case of two girls who appeared for the Combined Entrance Test for MCA held at Panjab University on June 16 with the same particulars on their roll number cards, except for their names, has hit a roadblock. The candidate, who had the details of the other candidate on her admit card, has twice failed to turn up before the committee.

Counselling schedules
Panjab University has declared the interview and counselling schedule for admission to first-year of Master in Public Health (MPH) course. The interviews and counselling for this course will be held on July 12 from 10 AM onwards in the Centre for Public Health, Aruna Ranjit Chandra Hall, PU. The candidates will have to bring their original documents at the time of the counselling.

Fatehgarh Sahib district sees over 90% turnout
Fatehgarh Sahib, July 3
There seemed to be much enthusiasm among the rural voters during the panchayat elections. They were seen standing in queues during the polling time to cast their votes. Women voters had also turned up in a large number. Over 90 per cent polling was reported in district Fatehgarh Sahib.

The police has booked Jagdeep Singh and his mother, Manjeet Kaur, both residents of Mani Majra, near Chandigarh, for harassing his wife, Hemanpreet Kaur, for dowry.

Bail granted, blast accused still in jail
Chandigarh, July 3
Even as a local court has granted bail to 70-year-old Santokh Singh for his alleged involvement in terror activities and a bomb blast case of 1985, no one from his family has come forward to offer a surety for him in court, as a result of which he is still in the prison. The UT police filed a chargesheet against him last month.

ASI gets bail in graft case
Chandigarh, July 3
The CBI Court today granted bail to an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the UT police who was arrested in May while taking a bribe of Rs 3,500 in the Sector 19 police station, where he was posted. The CBI Court granted bail to ASI Devinder Kumar Sharma against the bail bonds of Rs 30,000.

The CBI today filed a chargesheet in the Special CBI Court against Jagjit Kumar, a work inspector with the Estate Office, who was arrested in a bribe case in March this year.
