They thanked residents and the polling staff for cooperating with the administration in conducting panchayat elections in free and fair manner. As many as 1,459 wards were set up at 376 villages in Fatehgarh Sahib. There were 911 candidates for the posts of sarpanch, 2,947 candidates for the post of panchs and 419 polling booths were set up in these wards. As many as 63 sarpanchs and 1,022 panchs have already been elected unanimously in the district. Meanwhile, Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra, in charge of the Fatehgarh Sahib Constituency for SAD (B), claimed that SAD (B) has swept the panchayat elections and the Congress has been totally wiped out from the rural area. He said in majority of the villages, the contest was between warring groups of SAD (B) as the Congress had failed to field its candidates. He said the development projects will be initiated on war footing in Fatehgarh Sahib Constituency. However, Kuljit Singh Nagra, MLA, Fatehgarh Sahib, alleged that SAD (B) wokrkers have captured the polling booths in certain villages and at Rajinder Nagar village, one of the sensitive booths, the SAD workers thrashed the Congress workers who were admitted to Rajindera Hospital, Patiala. He alleged that at certain polling booths, Returning Officers were not issuing the Form Number-9 to the winning candidates, which has been made mandatory by the State Election Commission, so that result could be tampered. When contacted Deputy Commissioner, he refuted the allegation and said that all the winning candidates are being given form number-9 on the spot. When the SSP was asked about the beating incident, he said no such incident was reported to the police and an action will be taken only after receiving a complaint. — OC
