Mirroring reality
Bani…Ishq Da Kalma is a new soap on telly, yet it has gone up the popularity charts with rapid speed. We catch up with the ladies at the helm of things, Shefali Sharma and Neha Bagga...
Amarjot Kaur

Television, which was once nicknamed as the 'idiot box', has vanquished all stereotypical notions that defined it. In its journey of evolution, television seems to have embraced the idea of realism as it shoulders social concerns, which have been lurking only in bundles of old newspapers.

sister act: (L-R) Shefali Sharma and Neha BaggaIt has only been ninety days of its launch and the show Bani… Ishq Da Kalma on Colors TV has already stamped its realistic presence, even as it vividly portrays the NRI fascination that is predominant among most of Punjabis. Based on true stories of young Punjabi girls lured by the idea of marrying NRIs, the show revolves around the lives of two sisters, Bani and Rajji. In Chandigarh to promote their show, Shefali Sharma, who essays the role of Bani and Neha Bagga, who plays the role of her sister, Rajji, engage in a candid conversation.

Theatrical interlude

"Bani, my character, will be entering a different phase of her life as she is getting married to an NRI, Parmeet. She gives up on her dreams and adheres to the wishes of her parents, which is the current plot of the show," says Shefali Sharma, who hails from Amritsar.

"I have pursued theatre for over thirteen years and was also among the top five finalists of Miss PTC Punjabi, 2010," she shares while adding, "In the show, my character Bani is that of a conventional Punjabi girl who is well-rooted to her soil. For Bani, her parents' happiness is a prime concern and she can forsake her dreams at the altar of their wishes, happily and willingly."

Considering that this is Shefali's first television show, the 21-year-old looks confident in the bridal avatar as she shares, "This is my first show and though I was apprehensive about it at first, I believe that the concept of this show speaks volumes about it. Playing the role of Bani came naturally to me for that is how I am in real life too; theatre also helps."

Though the show courted many controversies about its name, which was initially Gurbani, Shefali justifies while saying, "This show was about a girl whose intentions are pure and her character is spotless, thus the name Gurbani. However, we did not want to hurt anyone's sentiments, so we changed the name to Bani…Ishq da Kalma. What's in the name after all? It's the concept and the story that matters."

Plot & passion

Neha Bagga, the Chandigarh girl who is pursuing her MBA in the UBS department of Panjab University, says, "I essay the role of Rajji, who is a very outspoken and a loud Punjabi girl. She follows her heart and is pretty bindaas." While talking about the show, she explains, "The show does not only depict the negative side of the NRIs, it stresses on the importance of verifying and cross-checking while making any decision that is related to marriage. That is the message of the show."

So how does she manage to juggle between studies and the show? She replies, "Well, I am pursuing a correspondence degree and my exams are due in December, which gives me ample time to focus on the show. Moreover, the degree is just a back-up option because I am very passionate about acting and I do want to carve a career out of it," she says.

Par Excellence
Stop the slice
Jesse Grewal

The ball slices due to the club face being open to the path of the club at impact. There could be many reasons for this - some being the fault of the club face and the other being due to an out to in path. The club face could be open due to three main reasons. The first being a weak grip which means that either less knuckles of the lead hand are visible at address (left hand for right handed golfers as in picture 1).

It also could be a right hand position where the 'v' formed by the thumb pointing to the left side (picture 2). Ideally 2-3 knuckles of the left hand should be visible which also sets the 'v' of the left hand anywhere between the right collar bone and the right shoulder. A weak grip with either hand leads to a club being open at impact.

The second reason for an open club face is the left hand being overly cupped at the top of the backswing (picture 3). The correct position at the top would be a relatively flat left wrist at the top of the back swing. This actually relates to the amount of cupping of the left wrist at address. If the left wrist is relatively flat at address it should be flat on top and if cupped at address, it should maintain the same cupped position at the top. This would keep the club face square. If the wrist cups more than at address it will open the club face.

The third reason for an open club face is a lack or late release. The turning action of the body combined with the slowing of the left side helps the right hand roll over the left and release the club. This shutting action of the club squares the face and also releases the power and speed to the ball. In an incorrect release the right hand stays under the left hand leading to an open club face at impact (picture 4). To stop a slice, assess the reason and in extreme cases of 'slicing' it could be all three.

The therapeutic code
Healing Code Therapy uses sounds to heal and the twelve frequencies of the voice act as the indicators of behaviourial issues...
Mona

Healing is the new buzzword today. In a life laden with stress, therapies helping you cure emotional tangles and eventually health problems are becoming increasingly popular. Dr Mahesh Hukmani brings yet another at your doorstep. Healing Code Therapy works on your voice and uses sound only to heal you. "Voice has twelve frequencies. And each missing frequency refers to some behavioural issue," says Dr Mahesh.

An ophthalmologist, Dr Mahesh left his practice in 2008 to pursue Scalar Energy Pyramid, which is a patent with him now. He moved on to Computerised Voice Scan next and is practicing for two years now. "The missing voice frequency tells a lot about emotional state and physical deficiencies like the lack of a particular vitamin or amino acid. Sound frequencies can be used to bring them in a state of harmony and health," mention Dr Mahesh.

Once the voice is analysed, Healing Code Therapy comes into play as he gives customised CDs with specific sound frequencies to cure the trouble the patient is facing, which one can listen to a few times a day. "The response is tremendous. People have not only benefited from stress and anxiety, but also from diabetes."

This affordable therapy costs Rs 800 a session and requires about three sessions a month. And the long list that it claims to cure includes stress, addictions, joint pain, chakra balancing and severe allergies. For more details check planethealers.in.

Actors Diljit Dosanjh and Neeru Bajwa inaugurate PVR Cinemas at Elante Mall
Tanya Malhotra

PVR Cinemas have a history of wooing audiences at Centra Mall and a huge fan following thereby. After that good response the brand has now opened another multiplex at Elante Mall, Industrial Area, Phase 1. And who else can you think of to inaugurate a multiplex but Punjab's own actors Diljit Dosanjh and Neeru Bajwa?

In Chandigarh to promote their movie, Jatt and Juliet 2, the team evokes laughter even in the most ordinary situation.

About the movie Diljit says, "This is not a sequel to Jatt and Juliet, it is a new story. What remains the same is the name of the movie and the characters. Even if you haven't watched Jatt and Juliet Part 1, you will be able to enjoy the movie."

Neeru says, "We hope to break records with our upcoming movie." The movie will release on June 28 at 500 multiplexes across the world, including France, Malaysia, Kenya and Austria. PVR too, will premiere the movie at the multiplex.

Coming back to the brand, with so many malls and even more multiplexes opening in the city, PVR hopes to outshine them all. What's special about this multiplex is the luxury it offers. Starting with 8 screens, the multiplex has 3D enabled silver screens, luxurious seats, led lighting and upgraded sound quality system. The subtle use of red and purple in the walls and seating makes it even more welcoming. Tired of the popcorn and coke? PVR brings a special food court for the customer to choose from an assortment of food, including a Café Coffee Day lounge, gelato ice-cream, pizza and sandwich kiosk and the good old menu of popcorn, coke and nachos.

"A complete ambience of luxury reflects from the moment you enter the multiplex till the time you exit," says Shalu Sabharwal, senior vice-president, PVR. With only gold and business class seating available, the price too has been pushed up for the tickets as Rs 200 and Rs 600, respectively. Shalu says, "Once you come and enjoy a movie at this multiplex, you would want to keep coming here for the royal experience. The price for the tickets is worth it." She adds, "We will soon bring the gold class.”

Doc Talk
For a rainy day
Dr Vikas Sharma

With the changing weather, one also has to change the skin care routine. The damp and humid weather of rainy season takes a heavy toll on the skin - no matter what the skin type is. Pollution, dirt, and overgrowth of micro-flora are the main reasons why skin is prone to damage during the rainy season.

One should also be aware of the high acid content of the first few showers of rain, because it can cause maximum damage to skin and hair. The rain showers also bring with it a lot of pollutants. When on contact with the skin it can cause and aggravate a lot of skin problems.

The prolonged hours of staying in wet clothes, immersion of feet in contaminated water and constant high environmental humidity all these can cause physical discomfort and aggravation of skin problems.

Greasy skin, flaky itching skin and severe acne are common at this time. Don't forget, skin infections are very common during the monsoon. Fungal and bacterial infections can be dangerous and leave behind scars and pigmentation.

Facial skin tends to become oily due to the humid weather. Those with oily skin should be extremely careful during the monsoon. The skin tends to get oilier and eventually lead to severe breakouts in form of nodulo-cystic lesions.

If you have dry skin, during the monsoon, your skin tends to get drier and dehydrated, you need to be cautious at this time. The skin tends to get flaky and itchy.

Take care

Monsoon is the time where your skin behaves a bit strange and is usually unstable; suddenly it gets oily or become dry and dehydrated. Hence it is necessary that you take care of your skin during this season in order to look fresh. Rain is the time when we mistake the high humidity around for excessive moisture in the skin, which is not true. The truth is that the moisture in the air does not transform into the moisture into the skin and hence skin commonly suffers from dehydration.

Cleansing: Rain water contains lots of chemicals and pollutants. So proper cleansing is very important in the monsoon. The high humidity can cause sweat to run in rivulets over your face. This creates a build-up of dirt, dust and grime along with other toxins on the surface of your skin. Washing the impurities away from the skin allows it to breathe. For the facial skin liquid cleansers and foams should be preferred over the soaps.

Toning: During the monsoon a lot of airborne and waterborne microbes are let loose. Very dry skins should stay away from toners or use very mild toners.

Avoid wearing heavy make-up. Opt for the sweat-proof or water-proof products.

Moisturiser: Moisturising in the rains is as important as it is in the summer or winter. Monsoon can mean a demoisturising effect on dry skin and an over-hydrating effect on oily skin. During rains despite the humidity in the air, our skin can be completely dehydrated in this season. The result is a dull lifeless skin which has no sheen. Moisturising the skin daily is a must for all types of skin. People who spend a lot of their time in an air-conditioned environment need to moisturise more frequently or else it makes the skin feel itchy. Use a non-water based moisturiser, if you happen to get wet often.

Excited about the partnership says John Abraham, “David Haye is an awesome guy …I’ve trained with him and realised that we share the same passion for fitness and the sport of boxing…I’ve always endorsed fitness and a healthy lifestyle and look to pioneer a new trend in India in association with David, a former world champion”.

No shortcuts for this Romeo!

Neil Nitin Mukesh may not have been a totally successful star but he is a good actor. He stars in lastweek's release Shortcut Romeo. He talks about his movie choices, expectations, and more.

Sense & sensibility

I do not understand why movies have to be nonsensical to be entertaining. Today's audiences are quite stressed out and want to be entertained at the movies. If you look at Batman or Superman, they are entertaining but also witty and clever. You have to use your brains to understand what is happening in the movie completely.

Romantic dream

My father Nitin Mukesh expected me to become a romantic hero. Due to my grandfather Mukesh's name and our politeness and humility in general, my father was surprised about my debut choice. He said that in my first film I was killing five people and having an extra-marital affair and he was not happy with it. He wanted me to do a romantic debut film. Thankfully, the gamble worked. They love all my avatars now.

Marketing strategy

Promotions and marketing are very important to reach out to the audience. People have to know you have a film coming up. Salman Khan is a superstar, so he does not need to market his movies but he still does that. So people like me need to promote the movie to make people aware about it. It is like delivery time and it is fun to interact with your fans and audiences and speak to the media.

Wacky side

Shortcut Romeo is the first movie in which I get to play a wacky Hindi film hero. I am doing songs and dances and lip-syncing to wacky lyrics. I am getting a chance to show my funny side and break out of my serious on-screen image. In real life, I have a good sense of humour and a mad side. I hope this role changes people's perception of me.

Hard work

I worked really hard to look like a street-smart kameena in the movie. Just because I am fair and look polished, that does not mean I cannot play an ambitious, lower-middle-class street-smart character who manipulates people. For the first time, my character was not pensive and I got to have a lot of fun and surprise my director each time. I know the audience was not convinced after Lafangey Parindey, so I worked harder this time.

YRF's new muse

Vaani Kapoor Vaani Kapoor is the new face that Yash Raj Films (YRF) is going to launch in their upcoming movie Shuddh Desi Romance. Vaani will share screen space with Parineeti Chopra and Sushant Singh Rajput.  “Parineeti and Vaani have equally important roles. They both have a romantic track in the plot with Sushant, though separately. In fact, they don’t meet at all in the film. They are linked only by their love for Sushant’s character” said a source.

This Delhi-based model turned actress has talent as well as looks. She has bagged a three-movie contract with YRF. She will also be cast against actor Nani for the Telugu and Tamil remake of Band Baaja Baaraat.

An insider said, “Just like Anushka, Vaani too has been a model and has done many brand endorsements. She was spotted by YRF officials during an event in the Capital. She met Adi about a year back and the filmmaker was extremely impressed by her. He asked his casting team to immediately audition her and she was signed on for the film.”

During the shoot of the film, she was not called by her real name in order to prevent outsiders from recognising her. “She was addressed by her screen name on the sets. YRF is considering her for their big-ticket projects and who knows she might even do a film directed by Aditya Chopra himself.” said the source.

Vaani straightway went to Aditya Chopra in his office with her portfolio to ask for a role. As such Aditya was looking out for a fresh face, was immediately impressed by her direct approach and her confidence. He took her screen test after discussing with Maneesh Sharma, who is the director of Shuddh Desi Romance and offered her the role.

“When Maneesh screen-tested Vaani with Sushant, he saw the same chemistry between them that he had seen between Anushka and Ranveer Singh in Band Baaja Baraat. Although Vaani and Sushant had never met.” a source close to the project revealed.

Vaani has appeared in a few national and international endorsements.

Shuddh Desi Romance has a very unique title. A source close to the production said, ''The unusual title has created a lot of buzz.”

Poonam does a pole dance

Poonam Pandey Recently Poonam Pandey did a shoot for the promotional song of her upcoming movie Nasha. In the erotic item song, Poonam used pole as a prop. With bare minimum and seductive clothing, she looked completely sensuous and gorgeous. The leggy lass adorned a dark coloured bikini for this song. The shooting took place in a studio in Mumbai.

The actress performed in water and was quite comfortable. Her face oozed confidence as she elegantly moved her body to the dance number. Poonam is reported to have worked hard on her body and went for a diet for this promotional song and no doubt her effort did show off.

Poonam is a model-turned-actress. She was among the top eight contestants for the Gladrags 2010 and was featured in Gladrags calendar in 2011. She also appeared in Kingfisher calendar in 2012. The controversial actress posted her sensual and erotic photos on micro blogging sites. She is debuting with movie Nasha. She has done a number of bold scenes for this movie.

According to Poonam Nasha is an adult movie. She said, “Yes, it's an adult film, it's a bold film but the script is very strong. I know people love to watch bold films, but for me, the script matters. The story of this film is great. My family is very happy with my debut film. They are saying it's the right move”. She also said, “There are different types of addiction. This film is also about one type of addiction and is certainly a movie that one will remember in the years to come.”

Poonam reveals that she had many offers from Bollywood. But she chose this particular movie as the story revolved around her character and she wanted to do something different. “I had over a hundred offers till date to act in all kinds of movies. But I chose this film because I wanted to be the heart of the story and not just a part of the script. I did not merely want to be relegated to be a prop on the set and wanted to act properly in the film and this film that Aditya Bhatia is producing promised to be that movie.”

Get to know the villain

Mohit Suri likes grey and edgy love stories and his upcoming movie The Villain is no different. It stars Shraddha Kapoor and Siddharth Malhotra. Mohit and Siddharth talk about the movie.

Mohit on Siddharth

Mohit held a narration of the movie with Siddharth before he left for his honeymoon last week. The movie will release in summer 2014. It is the story of a villain who falls in love and finds the hero within. Siddharth was a great choice for the movie because he has an emotional depth and intensity which was needed for the character. You will see the student transform into a villain and a larger than life hero in the movie.

Siddharh on Mohit

Mohit is a director who comes across as a regular guy perhaps because of his age or the way he works. He does not do auditions and just trusts his vibes for casting actors. He is the best guy to bring out the baddie in me. I am going to work out for this movie too.

Music matters

Mohit says that he will not make a movie if he cannot listen to its music. This movie is no different. We both are out of our comfort zones for the movie. Siddharth is out of Karan Johar's periphery and I am out of the Bhatt camp (only for this movie). So. hope for the best!

Ranveer has no time for himself

Ranveer Singh Appreciating co-actor Sonakshi Sinha's managerial skills, Ranveer Singh says he hardly has time for himself. "It is very off balance right now. It is completely skewed one way. I don't have much of a personal life. You promote one day...you shoot all night. There really isn't any time right now for personal life," Ranveer said here while promoting his forthcoming movie Lootera.

"I think it's all right because we are in our late twenties...we need to consolidate a career that's just taken off," said Ranveer.

The actor, who has been seen in films like Band Baaja Baaraat and Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl, next stars in Lootera directed by Vikramaditya Motwane opposite Sonakshi. The film is scheduled for release July 5.

The heart-throb praised Sonakshi for committing to multiple projects a year and said he learns the art of dealing with work pressure from her.

"We work double shifts, something I am very new to, which Sonakshi does all the time. She is such a busy actor. She has five releases a year...she makes so many movies a year. One of the busiest actors in the business. I learn from her how to tackle the load of your professional life," said the 27-year-old.

"I try and take out some time for friends and family to rejuvenate and recharge yourself so that you can tackle your work afresh but yes the sole priority in my life right now is my career," added Ranveer.

Hardwork all the way

Sanjeeda Shiekh Popular actor Sanjeeda Shiekh is sad that her show Dastaan is coming to an end. We talk to her about that and much more.

How are you feeling that your show is ending now?

All of us in the show are upset about it; no one thought that the show would end so soon and in this sudden manner. So much hardwork goes into a show and then to see that it is not hitting the right mark makes you feel sad.

Do you think a show going off-air affects your career?

Well, I have been working in this industry for years now and have done good shows, so people won't be holding this against me. It is an actor's talent that matters.

What's next for you?

I have been working too hard; right now I am looking at a break so I plan to take a vacation. When you work for TV, you hardly get a break so I want to enjoy myself. I had quit Piya Ka Ghar and immediately joined Dastaan.

You are also in demand for a lot of stage shows; right?

Yes, I enjoy dancing and I am glad people love me on stage. I would say I am a decent dancer.

Are you planning babies anytime soon?

No, not yet. Aamir and I are too young so there's still time. We are both focusing on our career. Everything should happen at the right time.

How has the experience of being a part of the show been?

I am getting an opportunity to work with talented actors like Aastha Chaudhary and Tabrez Khan. And all others in the Creative Eye's team are also fantastic to work with. I am basically having a good time.

What's the show about?

Creative Eye's Niyati has gone through many changes after completing more than 500 episodes. The makers of this daily social drama are leaving no stone unturned in giving this show a new look.

Has it been easy for you to do Parvati's character in Niyati?

Actors should be able to do any role. Nevertheless, it has helped me. The role I am playing is really different and I am enjoying it.

Are you in the race to stardom amongst many other actors?

I just believe in giving my 100 per cent as an actor and everything else is for the viewers to judge.

The turning point

The current track Parvarrish is dealing with children turning adults and the responsibilities that come with it. Rocky (Tapasvi Mehta) will soon step into adulthood with a grand celebration lined up for his birthday. Our source informs that the party won't end without some exciting drama and emotional twists.

A STILL FROM ParvarrishRocky will be asked by his friends to sneak out and enjoy with them. The young boys will be demanding more fun and taunt Rocky for his 'Plain Jane' style of party. "Rocky will be told of his simple ways of living and how his family restricts him to enjoy with his friends in a proper manner. They would also ask for alcohol to be served in the party, as now they are all adults," the source informs.

Tapasvi tells, "Rocky will be shunned by his friends because of his simple lifestyle as compared to that of his friends. He will be asked to enjoy on his 18th birthday and also consume alcohol."

So will Rocky give in to the pressure and opt to submit to his friends' demands thus breaking the trust his family has on him? The source further tells us, "Rocky will realise the importance of his family and the teachings they have asked him to imbibe. He will also have a showdown with his friends and tell them how correct his family has always been. After understanding his parents' advice on what is good and bad, Rocky acts in a responsible manner and chooses to enjoy with them rather than with his friends."

Rain dance magic

SAB TV's Jeannie Aur Juju recently captured the magic of Monsoon. Inspired by the classic monsoon romance, Jeannie adorns the look of the beautiful Zeenat Aman and Juju played Manoj Kumar while romancing Jeannie. While they danced to the timeless classic Hai hai yeh majburi, yeh mausam aur yeh duri, teri do takiya di naukri, mera lakho ka sawn jaayeh, the actors recreated the on-screen magic that was last seen between Zeenat Aman and Manoj Kumar.

The clothes and the props used for the sequence were lively with Ali's romantic expressions and Jia's bubbly face! The track unfolds with Jeannie having a busy day at work. When it starts raining, Jeannie gets extremely excited. In spite of a hectic work schedule, Jeannie managed to take out time to enjoy the rains.
