‘Sufism is fading’
Tribune News Service

Patiala, June 20
Spirit and essence of Sufism is wearing off and fainting with each passing day with not many supporters making any meaningful and consequential efforts to further its cause and strengthen its base. This was stated by Prof SM Azizuddin Husain, Director, Raza Library, Government of India, and a former Dean at Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi, in his special lecture on Sufism and Oneness of God.

The lecture was organised by the university’s Baba Farid Centre for Sufi Studies at the Punjabi University’s Senate Hall here today. While basing his thesis on historical descriptions to zero in on the concept of oneness of humanity vis-à-vis sufism, Prof Husain urged Punjabi University’s Vice-Chancellor to continue his efforts to promote and propagate the cause of Sufism in its real sense.

In his presidential address, Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh, while talking about the multidimensional perspective of the spirit of sufism drew parallel between the bani of Guru Granth Sahib and the concept of sufism. He emphasised upon the practicality and application aspects of the life-force of sufism. The personalised and philosophical meanings drawn by the forces that be, were causing the avoidable chaotic situations in the society,
he added.
