Romantic roll-er coaster
Wedding photos are a cherished memory for life. And if you have a collection of pre-wedding shoots, the romance of it all grows manifold
Tanya Malhotra

There is no age bar for love and romance. And there's nothing better than living in the memory forever! They say the best time of the whole wedding affair is the courtship period with the longing, blushing, smiling; counting days and listening to songs being an integral part of it all. In short, the filmi ishq wala love period!

Apart from the photography at the wedding (which is a must), capturing these little moments is also a part of the wedding trend these days, especially with arranged marriage where it breaks the ice between the couple. So whether you flaunt these photos at the wedding itself or hang them on the walls, one thing is clear…Chandigarh has caught up with the trend of pre-wedding photoshoots.

The man behind most of these memories is Chandigarh-based photographer D Edi Edwin. "The trend of pre-wedding photography has caught up in the last couple of years. It's a great idea for the couple to bond, especially with the arranged marriage. With the pre-wedding photography, the couple can now ask for a more exotic location, video of pre-wedding photography and a more contemporary touch to it," he says.

Words ain’t enough
Raj Kakra, who has penned down lyrics of umpteen Punjabi songs, has now turned a singer too…
Tanya Malhotra

Raj Kakra The name Raj Kakra might not ring a bell immediately, but when we talk about Amrinder Gill's biggest hit Dildariyan or Supna e ho gaya it doesn't take much time to remember the man who wrote the lyrics. Raj, who has been writing since the tender age of fifteen, is the man behind it all.

Today, Raj has written over 600 songs for many renowned singers like Jazzy B, Sukshinder Shinda, Amrinder Gill, Pammi Bai, Gippy Grewal, Daljit Dosanjh and Miss Pooja, among others. In movies too, he has written songs for Jatt and Juliet, Jinhe mera dil luteya and the recent hit, Jatts in Golmaal. Raj has established himself in the Punjabi music industry as a versatile singer and is now moving on to singing with his new album Dilbariyan.

In the album, there are nine songs sung to different beats but there is a common undercurrent of Punjabi culture in all; whether you talk about the lead song Dilbariyan, which has a romantic theme, or the purely Punjabi with Khaala ji da vaada. Says Raj, "I am proud of Punjab and its culture; I like to bring it up in my songs. The irony of life too is reflected as an undercurrent." What inspired him truly are the works of Jaswant Singh Kanwal and Khushwnt Singh. He adds, "I also like to write according to the singer I am working with. My responsibility as a composer is to connect with the audience."

Pammi Bai, who was present on the occasion, says, "Music comes to us naturally, but those with the inclination towards literature and who have witnessed the ups and downs of life can write in a much better fashion."

His take on commercialisation is equally clear, "I prefer not to go about gaddiyan (car), naddiyan (girls) and the insults. What's the whole point? Music connects with people instantly and deeply, it's the best platform to send across your message if used wisely."

What are his future plans, we ask? "I am soon going to work with Sukhshinder Shinda and Amrinder Gill on a few songs and we will also bring a collaborated album to give a platform to the new singers of Punjab," says Raj. As far as Bollywood is concerned, he adds, "Maybe when the audience is ready for me."

Right in the act
Manreet Kaur entered the bylanes of Hollywood with West is West, today the Chandigarh girl has her eyes set on B-Town with the movie White Lies...
Manpriya Singh

She takes a slight detour from the intended plan of action and ends up at a place where she's getting used to all the limelight as well as the questions coming her way. Model-turned-actor Manreet Kaur already quotes half-a-dozen movies as part of her introduction!

"I had been doing theatre in Chandigarh for four to five years before I landed up a cameo in the Hollywood film West is West," she shares, during the launch of Tressed Up, a beauty salon and spa in Mohali. It started on a completely different tangent and then the straight leap from theatre to the Hollywood stint. "My parents are doctors and I wanted to be a journalist. Films were never really on the agenda," she gives the backgrounder starting from her hometown Hoshiarpur. "I came to Chandigarh to study and had been doing theatre for four to five years. My play Leather Coat brought a lot of recognition and also a short role in the Hollywood film West is West, in which I played a Muslim girl."

The journey

So far, it's been a classic case of 'one thing led to the other and another'. She shares, "I have been anchoring shows on regional channels and doing music videos; recently I even did a television commercial opposite R. Madhavan and Roadies brothers Raghu and Rajiv." Moving on, she's also dabbled in a Marathi movie called Jai Maharasthra Dhaba Bathinda and if the language was any bar, it was taken care of by the fact that, "I played a Punjabi girl in the movie."

If getting to be Gurpreet Ghuggi's girlfriend in Lucky Di Unlucky Story was the career highlight then getting to work with Emraan Hashmi was the high-point. "I have White Lies coming up, which also stars Emraan Hashmi. Getting to work in a Bollywood film was a great feeling. I play a detective girl in the movie." She adds, "We had so much fun shooting in Patiala and Emraan Hashmi is such a down-to-earth soul." What remains to be yet experienced is the role she set out to play in real life. "I'd love to play a journalist in any film especially because that's what I wanted to be in real life."

Punjabi cinema

It may be a long way to the mainstream Bollywood cinema but she's taken the baby steps in the booming Punjabi industry. In the pipeline is a long list of Punjabi romantic comedies with a curious mix of star cast. "I have Jatt Airways coming up in which I have a negative, but still a funny character. The movie also casts singer-turned-actor Alfaaz and Bollywood actress Tulip Joshi."

The first lead role awaits in the form of the onscreen character Manreet that she plays in Jatt in Mood, an out-and-out love story. The Chandigarh-based former MCM College student, devotes an hour every day to working out and staying fit. As for the future, perhaps, she's not planning this time. "I have offers from serials coming up and am planning to shift base to Mumbai. I don't mind wearing Kanjivaram sarees and heavy make-up along with jewellery, and even working round-the-clock provided I get an opportunity to act."

CELEB POINT
I believe I can fly…
Divya Dutta

I am writing to you all from the lovely beaches of Phuket. It’s been a while since I had taken a few days off from my hectic schedule and gone on a holiday. So, I just called up two of my school friends and asked, “Would you like to go to Phuket in a week’s time?” I was half expecting them to say yes and they did surprise me by saying yes.

Here we are, three school friends, different backgrounds, different work fields, different tastes, but with the intention of having fun together.

One very simple, the other likes her holiday very quiet and the crazy mad adventurous me! All three with different agendas...one making a plan, the other not agreeing to it as she wants to do something else.

Guess that’s how it works with three strong- headed women. This already seemed to be a big adventure-- agreeing to disagree on planning the much-awaited chutti!

So, we all decided to be together and do our own thing and that turned out lovely. I planned my scuba diving and a jungle tree- hopping adventure. But I was tense to go alone. It’s always fun and reassuring to be with someone to share your masti and shrieks. But both my friends were scared and of course had different plans. So, I prepared myself to overcome this fear of mine.

My friends packed me off with food and drinks for my jungle tree-hopping adventure but for me it was a double adventure, overcoming my discomfort of something new. And something changed in me. I was ready to take it all head on!

I sat in the car which came to pick me up. There was a young American girl sitting already and she said she was alone too. We chatted and in no time two Czech girls joined in.

So at the tree-hopping adventure, we were given safety precautions and helmets. I was very excited. One by one we were all tied up and we had to swing by a rope from a tree above the tall thick jungle to the other end on a machaan on the other tree. The guy threw me to the depth of the jungle with just my rope and enthusiasm holding me. I felt like a bird, flying, with my wings out, exploring the green trees and bushes beneath me. And yes, I wasn’t alone. I could hear my new friends cheering me up from far.

It is difficult to explain but exploring new horizons, challenging your fears and enjoying it later was a very liberating feeling. I had literally flown in the sky, from one tree to the other, across the entire forest. What an experience! And it happened because I allowed myself to let go! To discover what I don’t know about myself.

As I sat in the car, I got a call from my friends, “Where are you, let’s go for dinner!”

After the adventure, chilling and just being with my buddies seemed perfect.

We all were happy. Spending the day our way, and then being together was a lovely balance, and I had found a new friend.....me! And I kind of liked my new friend. Guess I wouldn’t mind going on a holiday like this with the new friend too.

Today is another day, and we are on our way to Krabi, looking forward to newer adventure, newer friends, in the security and comfort of the old ones...

get physical
Work it out
Vishal Thukral

Most of us are facing health problems due to lack of exercise and proper physical workouts. However, fitness is just not a plan to embark upon to lose weight, rather it’s a lifelong passion to help you maintain good health and the physique you want. For long-term results, find activities you enjoy, instead of merely choosing those that burn calories.

Here are some workout routines and ideas to help you along your way. These recommendations will help you evolve your workout routine and activity plan.

Step out

If you don’t have time to hit the gym, never fear. You can still get in fitness routine. Forty minutes brisk walk four times a week is an excellent first step towards fitness. If you feel like, jog for a few minutes during each walk session. Consider buying a bicycle and enjoy the ride at least every alternate day in a week for at least 40 to 50 minutes. Another great activity is gardening, an under-rated form of stress reduction and exercise.

Group show

Group activities may be your best way to get in shape. Aerobics or dancing is one of the most popular group activities. That will get you moving and burning calories.

Priority list

If you are really out of shape, make exercise a priority. All the excuses would vanish once you commit yourself. Exercise even if you are tired. Breathe deeply for five to 10 minutes and get ready for the fitness schedule of your liking which may include few minutes of jumping jacks, sit ups or push-ups along with few stretches.

Be realistic about the amount of time you can commit to your fitness regimen. Plan the time of the day you will work out. Some individuals prefer morning workouts while others prefer evening or weekend sessions. The time of day you will be exercising may dictate where or how you will exercise whether indoor or outdoor.

Goal post

If your goals include weight loss, you will need to consider dietary changes as well as significant cardio activity. Strength training is also essential to boost metabolism rates and burning more calories. If your fitness goals are targeted at a contest or an event, your programme will include interval training, targeted activities and a significant time commitment.

Reward time

Experts say that making behavioural changes is hard and reward motivates. So decide on a goal and a reward and work towards it. Buy yourself a dress or jeans you’ve wanted after you stick to your fitness plan for one month, or buy a new pair of jogging shoes or whatever works for you.

It’s Rocking
Between the lines
Amarjot Kaur

Topping the charts is the song recorded by American R&B recording artiste Robin Thicke, for his sixth studio album, Blurred Lines. The song, Blurred lines, features guest vocals from American rapper T.I. with American singer and producer Pharrell. The single has already peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and it has also become Thicke's most successful song on the Billboard Hot 100. He previously climbed the number 14 with Lost without U in 2007. As far as the city folks are concerned, let’s see how they are taking to it.

Sexy vocals

What I love about the song is the fact that it has very sexy vocals and music of this song is just intoxicating. I love the way they have pulled this one and I think it is a huge leap for the R&B evolution. The sound of the song clicks with the masses and I am certainly hooked to the tune.

Best beats

The beats of this song and the multi-layered harmony of the chorus have made this song an instant hit. Also, these complement the racy content of the song and I quiet honestly feel like dancing each time I hear it.

Vidushi Sachdeva, student

Disco shuffling

This is the catchiest and sexiest pop dance number of the year. It is completely on fire! There is a bubbly bit of disco-shuffling R&B that is typical of this song. It's a subject that has been treated in such a way that it comes across as smooth and soulful. There is the right balance of charm and swagger with which it has been pulled off.

TRENDSETTER
Model look

He is a model and a passionate bike rider. He loves photography and if he seems a little too familiar, it’s because of the Pepsi commercial he had recently done. Nikhil Mahajan spreads his charm with his out-of- the-box dressing sense and of course, humour! And it’s contagious!

Your sense of style?

Keep it casual yet trendy.

Latest addition to your treasure of clothing or accessories?

I am concentrating more on lighter shades of linen pants and chinos. So, to be precise my wardrobe is getting loaded with colourful chinos/pants and tees.

Brand crazy or street pick-up?

Both. Till the time the clothes are comfortable. For denims and footwear, I am strictly a brand person.

Who would be your style icon?

Amitabh Bachan. He is classy in his own way.

Who do you think is the worst-dressed celebrity?

It's harsh to comment on anyone's personality but still if I have to give one name then Vidya Balan is worst among all.

Which look would your prefer – sporty, chic or glamorous?

I will go for sporty as it's a pretty relaxed look.

One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension…

Yellow shoes (which are quite common these days) are totally out of my fashion sense. It looks weird and a big-time fashion disaster.

Your take on accessories?

Well, for men there are two must have accessories--watch and goggles. And for me they are a must!

Given a choice, which designer would you like to be dressed by?

Rohit Bal. He is just wonderful with his work and designs.

What gives you a high on the confidence level?

A man's personality is judged by his shoes. So, a good pair of shoes will always give a boost to your confidence.

She’s got the looks

Deepika Padukone Deepika Padukone is the brand ambassador for Vogue Eyewear, an internationally renowned eye-wear brand. She has been associated with the brand since six months but the official launch happened only on June 17. She talks about everything in vogue.

New avatar

In the last couple of movies, I have had different looks so my stylist has a field day putting together a new hairstyle, a new frame, and suitable clothes. I really pamper her. With my association with Vogue, I have a new frame to wear for every new look. A lot of people now do not have a problem with their eyes but it has become cool to wear optical frames. It has become a fashion trend.

First timer

It really means something big to me and it feels great to be the first Indian face of Vogue alongside people like Kate Moss, Gisele Bundchen, Eva Mendes, and Jude Law. It is amazing to share the same brand. Shooting the campaign was a breeze because the team was incredible. I think the campaign   is stylish yet it makes Vogue accessible and identifiable.

Setting trends

Earlier, people who wore spectacles were geeky or nerdy and now people are wearing specs to look cool and stylish. It is fun! I am happy that Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani set that trend. Manish Malhotra and I worked on the look. Nowadays, people have so much variety in frames with shapes and colours and sizes.

Being in vogue

Being in vogue is about knowing what is in fashion, being up-to-date with the latest trends and setting trends. At the same time, one must not get lost in trends and lose their personality for the sake of fashion. We must wear what we feel comfortable in. I wear simple and classic frames all the time and I also need specs sometimes because I cannot see too far in the distance. I feel the brown shade suits me.

Fashion icon

It is nice to know that I am a fashion icon. It is good to know what is in fashion and people must not follow trends blindly but wear clothes that suit their personality. I am not into accessories as such. I feel a simple watch, a nice pair of sunglasses, a simple pair of earrings, and a smart handbag should suffice to complete a look.

On face value

Sonakshi Sinha does not know if she likes the "lucky mascot" tag or not. She said that her being blessed with an expressive face helped her do difficult scenes in Lootera.

Lucky mascot

I am okay with it actually because the media is saying that and it is temporary. I am lucky to have had so many hits and movies in just three years. Nobody is saying that Sonakshi cannot act so I am okay with it. People can see I am talented and can deliver on many fronts so why should I complain?

Signing Lootera

A lot of research has gone into the movie to recreate the era of 1950s. They have paid attention to the smallest detail. I had to do many scenes using just my eyes, so thank God I have an expressive face! Many people didn't want me to do this movie because it is different from what I have done but when I heard the script I could not see anyone else essaying the role of Pakhi who is the daughter of a zamindar and she falls in love with Ranveer's character, who has shady secrets. So I wanted to do the role and took it up as a challenge, especially when people told me not to do it. Vikramaditya Motwane is a terrific director and he made my work easy.

Odd pairing

Ranveer Singh is energetic while I am relatively laid-back. He really had to calm himself down for his character. I had my reservations about our pairing but I think we look magical now. The unit members were the most disciplined and sorted lot I have ever seen. People avoided talking for sync sound and we had proper timings for lunch and breakfast and fewer breaks to finish the movie on time across various locales.

Pretty women!

Actor Vindoo Dara Singh, who's currently out on bail in the IPL spot-fixing case, shot for his upcoming film Balwinder Singh Famous Ho Gaya with singer Mika Singh, dressed as women.

Vindoo was also joined by Rajpal Yadav, who plays one of the four protagonists in the film.

Director Sunil Agnihotri chuckled, "Aren't Mika and Shaan pretty? We shot for a pre-climax scene and it turned out exactly the way I wanted. The audiences are going to love seeing the duo in this avatar."

While Vindoo wore a velvet halter dress in deep blue, boots and colourful beads around his neck, Rajpal stood out in his blonde wig.

Mika says, “Maza aa gaya. I played Sita's sakhi's role in Ram Leela as a child. Now I play this Punjabi woman. I thoroughly enjoyed shooting for this scene. We all had so much fun. It wasn’t easy to act like a woman but we somehow managed to do it.”

Ripudaman the master chef

The grand finale of Masterchef Kitchen Ke Superstar witnessed the three finalists Navneet Rastogi, Doyel Sarangi, Ripudaman Handa wait with bated breath as one of them was crowned the real hero of another prestigious season of the biggest culinary show in India. Their fate was left in the hands of the judges and the viewers, who would vote for them.

That one contestant and home chef who faced all the daunting tasks with hardwork and determination, who won over the judges’ hearts and who got immense support from the public, was none other than Ripudaman Handa – the winner of Masterchef Kitchen Ke Superstas! Ripudaman felt an adrenaline rush, was consumed with intense joy and was extremely happy with the opportunities that lie ahead for him. Actor Ranveer Singh, who will be seen next in the film Lootera with Sonakshi Sinha, were part of this special episode and he presented the winner with the cash prize of Rs 1 crore.

When asked what he would like to do with this money, Ripudaman said, “I have handed over the cheque to my parents as I trust them completely with my life. I am thrilled to be the winner and I am looking forward to a career in cooking.” Navneet Rastogi was the second runner-up and Doyel Sarangi came third. Navneet was presented with a one year internship from Courtyard by Marriott.

The families of all three contestants had flown down to Mumbai to the sets of Masterchef Kitchen Ke Superstars to witness the special moment in the lives of their loved ones. They have watched them endure all the challenges thrown at them by the judges, from bamboo cooking to making the excruciatingly tough chocolate ball and are now excited about their new journey.

“It is not the end. This show has honed my culinary skills to a new level and I am very sure that I want to continue pursuing a career in this field now. This is the beginning of my new life,” says Navneet Rastogi who came second.  For judges Sanjeev Kapoor, Vikas Khanna and Kunal Kapoor it was challenging to pick just one winner among three talented home chefs. “Each of them was a winner in our eyes; each had come a long way since they set foot in the kitchen. It was tough for us to pick the winner. But Ripudaman showed great potential, talent and has a very bright future ahead of him,” says Vikas Khanna.

 Mona Wasu Role call

The young and happening

He started off with playing the role of young Jagya in the hit show Balika Vadhu, but now Avinash Mukherjee is a grown up. At age 15, he has taken up yet another complex role in Sanskaar. We catch up with him.

How has life been post Balika?

It has been great. People know me and love me as Jagya, but recently someone asked me ‘aap Sanskaar mein aate ho na’! It felt really good to be recognised for your work.

What else keeps you busy?

My studies. I completed my 10th standard and now I am in the 11th class, which is why I can shoot for a serial.

Your role in Sanskaar started off with a bang but nothing much happened. Why?

It was planned with a dramatic entry and was being developed. Now with 100 episodes over, the show is picking up and soon my character will return with a smashing storyline.

You must be angry and disappointed with your role not getting prominence?

Well, not really. I was in the know about the development of the role. You can’t have multiple tracks in the story. Currently, the focus of the story was on the mill and Baa and Bhoomi’s challenges, but now with those over the focus will be on other tracks.

Are you dating anyone?

No. I am focused on my career and studies right now. That is my priority.

Of twists and turns

Viewers can always expect the unexpected when it comes to the twists in Amrit Manthan. With the notorious plans of Karan (Angad Hasija) coming to the fore, Nimrit (Ankita Sharma) is surely forced to the edge. While the wedding preparations of Karan and Nimrit are in process, Nimrit, who is being blackmailed by Karan, is trying hard to stop the wedding from happening.

So what does Nimrit do? Well, we hear that though Nimrit is frightened about Karan's future plans, she musters courage to arrange some goons to kidnap Karan just before the wedding. Karan is hounded by these rough men who kidnap him by pointing guns at him.

Our source says that the creative team had planned a major action sequence involving the goons and Angad, but it had to be cancelled owing to the recent heavy downpour in Mumbai. Angad Hasija said, “Karan is shown to be completely negative now and he wants to marry Nimrit. There is a lot of drama in store for viewers...is what I will say. I am enjoying playing this negative role.”
