Get ready to pay house tax

UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil has approved the house tax proposal sent by the municipal corporation (MC). With the Administrator’s approval, city residents will now have to pay house tax at the rate of Re 1 per sq yard per year.

Leaving the UT police red-faced, two masked thieves decamped with Rs 3 lakh, a mobile phone and other accessories from a shop at a petrol pump Sector 4, which is at a stone's throw from the MLA flats and a few metres away from the Sector 3 police station.

Demand for power in city down 48%
Chandigarh, June 17
Monsoon showers have not only brought relief to city residents from the sweltering heat, but have also brought a smile on the faces of officials of the UT Electricity Department, who were finding it difficult to meet the power demand and supply gap. The demand for power in the city has come down by 48 per cent due to recent rainfall.

30% excessive rainfall this June
Chandigarh, June 17
With the city recording 41.5 mm of rainfall till 8.30 am today, the overall rainfall figure in June has reached up to 223.6 mm. The local weather officials said the rainfall received so far was already 30 per cent excessive for this month. More rainfall was likely to come since the southwest monsoon had covered the entire region, including Chandigarh, said the officials.

Patil’s quick session leaves residents grumbling

The complainants, who turned up at UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil’s public hearing session, alleged that they were not heard properly after the Administrator took only half an hour to complete the public hearing session at the UT Secretariat today.

Mohali MC limits set to expand
Mohali, June 17
The Punjab Government today passed a resolution of the Mohali Municipal Corporation regarding the extension of its limits by adding 21 villages and new sectors from 82 to 122 in its area here.

Loot victim earns cop's wrath for 'defying' him
Panchkula, June 17 A mobile phone and Rs 400 were looted from a person by four miscreants at the Industrial Area, Phase 1, Panchkula, last night. The victim, Sanjay, alleged that when he went to the Sector 19 police post, the in charge beat up him, saying that he should have mentioned a theft in the complaint instead of a loot.

Projects not approved, colonisers see red

While addressing the media persons here today Harpreet Singh, president of Colonisers Association alleged that on the one hand the cabinet has decided to regularise the illegal colonies in the state, whereas on the other, the developers of the TP Schemes are running from pillar to post to get their projects approved since last two to three years in spite of the fact that the respective councils had already passed resolutions to approve their TP Schemes and the developers had deposited worth lakhs of rupees towards licensee fee, EDC charges and CLU charges at the time of submitting their applications.

A local court today sent the two accused in the murder of UT police Inspector Sucha Singh to judicial custody. Judicial Magistrate Parvesh Singla sent Basant Kumar, alias Bunty, and his female accomplice Sarita, who have been booked for the murder of the UT police Inspector, to 14-day judicial custody after their four-day police custody ended today.

Man held on charge of bigamy
Chandigarh, June 17
Acting on a woman’s complaint, the police has registered a bigamy case against a resident of Sector 9. The police has arrested Dhanu Nikhanj, who is a relative of a former Indian cricketer, in the case. He has been remanded in two-day police custody.
