Key posts lying vacant in Health Department
Bathinda, June 3 For the last three to four years, there has been no regular district epidemiologist. After Dr Malkit Singh was promoted, a doctor from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Project (IDSP) was given the charge. However, around one year ago, the charge was handed over to the District Health Officer. Now, for this dengue and malaria season, the charge has been given to Dr Gaurav Grover, who was earlier posted at Raman. Dr Grover, who has cleared civil services examination, may leave after August. There was no regular district epidemiologist even when dengue cases surfaced in the city two years ago. The double charges have led to overburdening of the existing medicos, who are finding it difficult to manage. "There is already a lot of pressure to meet the targets and deadlines of various national and state health projects. In such a situation, managing multi-tasks becomes very challenging," confided an officer. Similarly, there has been no assistant civil surgeon. The charge is given to one of the senior most doctors on duty. The posts of SMOs at Raman, Bhucho and Maur too have been lying vacant and immediate subordinate medical officers are looking after the job. Civil Surgeon Dr Ajay Sahni said the higher authorities in the Health Department have been informed a number of times that the post of district epidemiologist was lying vacant. He added that a doctor from Mansa had been posted as assistant civil surgeon, but he was yet to join the office. Similarly, the SMOs at Raman, Bhucho and Maur have also been posted but they are yet to assume the charge. "The SMOs at Raman and Maur were to join with the new SMOs posted at Nathana, Sangat and Ghudda," Sahni said. Fact file

GIS survey, remote sensing date deadline extended
Bathinda, June 3 "The work on zone number two is going on, while three more zones are pending," said assistant municipal commissioner Kamal Kant Goyal. Earlier, the company was to complete the survey by May 31. Since along with the survey, remote sensing is to be done by the Punjab Remote Sensing Centre with its headquarters at Punjab Agriculture University (PAU), Ludhiana, the exercise is taking time. Once completed, the survey will make the MCB richer because of the exact number of households and commercial establishments that the city has. It is also expected to keep a check on property disputes as well as illegal claimants to land. It would help attain property details at just a click of the button as the MCB has provided a digital map of property. The Punjab Remote Sensing Centre is the only government expert agency in incorporating such data. The centre would provide a free satellite map of the city to the municipal corporation. The MCB has prepared a base map on which the entire scheme is anchored. It would streamline the record of properties in the city and would serve as an important tool in identifying areas that are deficient in civic amenities. Every plot owner would be provided a 17-digit unique identification number that would enable them to make online payment of their taxes. All kinds of details of property such as ownership, queries, water supply, sewerage etc would be available at the click of a button, which would also prove helpful in charting out new schemes and seeking government funds for the city. |

Row over marriage refuses to die
Bathinda, June 3 The boy, Sikandar Khan (21), sought security cover from the court for the girl and himself after producing a marriage certificate around three months ago. The boy, apprehending threat from the girl’s father, uncle, brother and harassment by Panchkula police, got security cover from the Bathinda police by moving a petition in court. The court summoned the girl’s family and a reply was filed through the girl's counsel in the court of Sessions Judge Jaspal Singh. In his reply, the father sought dismissal of the boy’s petition by alleging that the boy belongs to another religion and cannot marry a Sikh girl in a gurudwara. The father alleged that the certificate of marriage produced in the court was fake. The girl’s father, Gurdeep Singh, said that the boy claims to have married his daughter Parvinder Kaur at Gurudwara Nanak Wari Sahib situated in Guru Gobind Singh Nagar, Bathinda. The certificate bears the signatures of gurudwara president Darshan Singh and head granthi Hardeep Singh. Corroborating the father’s claim, president of Khalsa Diwan Gurudwara Singh Sabha, Bathinda, Rajinder Sidhu said that the gurudwara certificate was fake. “The certificate seems to have been issued by the Granthi who was shown the door by a sub-committee of the gurudwara a year ago” Sidhu said, adding that he was summoned by the court on May 27 but the case was adjourned for next date. Cantonment SHO Paramjit Doad said the girl’s father came to the police station sometime ago and sought police intervention to get his daughter back to Panchkula. “Since the matter is in court which has also issued orders of providing security to the boy and girl the police has little to do in this case”, Doad said. The SHO added that the boy’s and girl’s family were residing in MES Colony in cantonm, ent where the duo came in contact with each other and reportedly got married. The girl’s father’s counsel Sukhdarshan Sharma said that the claims of boy marrying the girl raises doubt as the certificate produced by them to obtain security appeared to be fake. The boy has also been booked by Mauli Jagran police of Panchkula under section 365 (abduction) of the IPC on the complaint of girl’s father, Sharma said. He said the Granthi cannot perform Anand Karaj ceremony of a Sikh girl with a boy from another religion without changing the religion and the so called marriage certificate is fabricated and not acceptable. Sharma said that boy’s petition says that he married the girl in Gurudwara Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji at Partap Nagar, Bathinda but the certificate of marriage produced by him is issued by Gurudwara Nanak Wari Sahi at Guru Gobind Singh Nagar, which creates doubt over solemnization of marriage. The counsel, demanding the prosecution of the granthi for issuing a fake certificate, said that it was found that the granthi had stolen the letter pad of the gurudwara. The next date of hearing in the court is on June 7. |
Becoming an actor was sheer chance, says Aman Dhaliwal
Bathinda, June 3 Few would believe that this lad from Mansa was studying in Delhi to be a doctor when he did his first print commercial. "I had gone to a saloon for a haircut and was mistaken by the make-up artistes for a model. They coloured my hair and cast me in a commercial that they were to shoot for some hair care product. And that's how I ventured into modelling for advertisements," he said. He added that it was at the behest of his teachers that he went to Mumbai to meet Ashutosh Gowarikar and got a role in "Jodha Akbar". When asked how his family reacted to his choice of career, he said, "My parents were teachers and wanted me to be a doctor. "But when my father saw the kind of respect I was getting, he supported me. My mother didn't believe it was me when she saw a music video. Still, many of our family's acquaintances in Mansa think I have a twin brother who is an actor." Apart from print and TV commercials, Aman was seen in a Punjabi film 'Ajj De Ranjhe'. "We just completed the last schedule of my next film, 'Putt Jattan De' in Bangkok. The film stars veteran actor Om Puri. The film will release in August this year. "The film follows the story of three generations. While the first generation is represented by Om Puri and Guggu Gill, the second is represented by actor Rahul Dev and the third one by me. The film showcases the difference in the thought processes of the three generations and how the three meet," he added. "The film's content was decided keeping in mind both the rural and urban audience. We have made a film which will strike a chord with both types of audiences unlike the recent Punjabi films which are not liked by the audience in the rural areas," he further added. |
