Oak Grove School completes 125 years of existence
Mussoorie, May 30 The social media sites and several other portals created by the ex-students who still feel as the part large family are already abuzz with greetings and messages on completion of 125 years of Oak Grove School as a premiere education centre owned by Northern Railways. Former students are also contributing in their own ways as they do not want to be left out of 125 years long legacy of the school. One of the former students, Subhash Gupta, who joined Oak Grove School in class 4 in 1994 and completed class 12 in 2003 and presently owns an apparel unit in Delhi, has found a novel way of contributing towards the 125th year celebrations of the school by creating a unique memorabilia in the form of special mugs,T-shirts,Pen Drives etc with the logo of the school engrained on it. When contacted Subhash Gupta speaking to The Tribune said that he found that the former students were longing to own their own symbol of their alma mater that is easily available worldwide so that they can cherish it for life. Finding the 125th year celebrations of the school as opportune moment, he decided to create a range of articles with Oak Grove School logo inscribed on it for which he received motivation from other seniors from the school that lead to creating an online OG memorabilia section. The members of the ex-students' association called The Oakgrovian Association of India (TOGA) have also decided to contribute by donating two laptops to best student from boys' and girls' section each on the occasion. According to the association secretary Brijesh Bhutani and treasurer Balkrishan Tanvar, the Delhi chapter of the association will also be donating a trophy and cash prize in memory of deceased ex-student Anil Bhatnagar on the occasion. Another ex-student Nikhil Kumar is contributing to the school by collecting the rare and old pictures of the students dating back to British era. Nikhil Kumar opines that after completing class 12, and being struck by nostalgia, he had joined the OG forum on msn, which was OG's first online forum. There were many discussions and several people had shared their photos. Most of them were of the 60s-70s period though. After msn died down, he formed the present OG Mussoorie group and got in touch with many ex-Oak Grovians from abroad (Australia, NZ, UK, Canada) who shared their pictures with him often. He also planned to come out with a coffee-table book in association with a few seniors and collected many rare pictures in the process, but then he heard that the school itself had to put the idea on the back-burner. Ex-Oakgrovian Sanjeev Meston, residing in Australia, elated at 125 years' celebrations of the school, says: “ I owe a lot to my alma mater. I, hence, thought to contribute in my own way. So I developed a Web portal for Oak Grove Alumni to remain in touch with happenings at school, and also provide them with an opportunity to form alumni networks in various locations of the world. This portal will soon have many features incorporated in it.” He further said that his other desire was to set up a complete online learning management system for the school students and staff and give back to the school in this
way. |

Hridayesh: Pointless controversy over House building, permanent capital
Dehradun, May 30 ''The issue of constructing the proposed Vidhan Sabha building in Raipur should be delinked with the permanent capital issue. The Planning Commission had allocated funds for building the Vidhan Sabha building which have to be utilised, otherwise the funds would lapse. For this purpose a new building has been proposed in Raipur (Dehradun). The present Vidhan Sabha building is too small and not according to the norms. The issue of selecting a capital for Uttarakhand should not be mixed with this. The issue has to be sorted by all the parties through consensus,'' she said. As of now Dehradun continues to be the interim capital of the state, but after the Bahuguna government decided to build a new Vidhan Sabha building and a Secretariat building in Raipur, the issue got mired in a controversy. While speaking with mediapersons today, the minister also said that the problem facing the payment of honorarium to the representatives of panchayats had been resolved, ''We had received some complaints about Nainital and Pauri districts pertaining to the disbursal of honorarium. The problem was not at the end of the Department of Finance,'' she said. The minister, who also met the Principal Secretary, Industries, Rakesh Sharma, also said that raids to curb illegal mining activity would continue as illegal mining was causing a huge lose to the exchequer. ''We do not have separate force to tackle this menace, but with our limited manpower extra vigil is being maintained at night and it is yielding results,'' she said. On the issue of a new president for the Uttarakhand Congress Party, the minister said that in the Congress Party, the suitable candidate is decided by building a consensus in the party and there is no tradition of holding elections. |
