New Haridwar DM to take on illegal quarrying
To tackle encroachments, give better facilities for Char Dham pilgrimage, beautify Har-ki-Pauri, ease traffic woes
Sandeep Rawat
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, May 22
Major issues pertaining to Haridwar, like illegal quarrying, encroachments, facilities for the Char Dham pilgrimage and beautification of Har-ki-Pauri are priority of the newly appointed District Magistrate Nidhi Pandey.

A 2001 Maharashtra-cadre Indian Administrative Service Officer, she said she was open to suggestions, but would take decisions after reviewing all aspects.

Nidhi Pandey, who is the first woman DM of Haridwar, since the formation of Uttarakhand, today inspected preparations being made for the upcoming Kanwar Mela Fair at the Bairagi camp and Jagjeetpur along with Senior Superintendent of Police of Haridwar Arun Mohan Joshi.

She said planning was essential to manage the around one crore kanwariyas. As the Char Dham pilgrimage to the shrines of Shri Badrinath, Shri Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri had commenced and soon the Hemkunt Sahib shrine would open, care would be taken that pilgrims were provided better facilities from Haridwar itself, which is regarded as the gateway to the Char Dham.

With illegal quarrying allegedly going on in the Ganga river bed, Nidhi Pandey, who formerly served as Additional Secretary to the Chief Minister, said she would visit the site to gauge the situation.

As DM, Nidhi attended the famous Ganga aarti at the Braham Kund, Har-Ki-Pauri, last evening. There, she noticed the garbage, encroachments, stray animals, beggars and lack of proper facilities for devotees and tourists. She has already brought it to the notice of Ganga Sabha office-bearers, Mayor Manoj Garg and administrative officials.

"Major improvement needs to be done at the core mela zone of Har-ki-Pauri-which is world famous. Visitors will feel a change at this ancient site in the coming days. Everyone needs to be positive and work in a coordinated and cooperative manner to achieve the desired results or changes," Nidhi said.

A specific traffic plan was also being envisaged so as to lessen pressure on the zero zone that spreads from Khadkhadi-Har-ki-Pauri to the Shiv Moorti Chowk. New parking lots would be earmarked to ease traffic congestion.

On the diminishing green cover of the city, Nidhi Pandey said mass awareness and cooperation from local residents, forest department, tourists, social organisations and educational institutions was needed.

Replying to a TNS query, Nidhi said she would look into the recent incidents of tree-axing allegedly by wood mafia at several horticulture plots where commercial plots and buildings had mushroomed.

The District Magistrate plans to hold 'janata darbars' and will provide information regarding administration and government schemes via communication-media tools to make sure that information reached remote areas, too.

Kabadi Bazar only place to relocate fish market: DMC
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, May 22
Mayor Vinod Chamoli today made it clear to Additional District Magistrate Harak Singh Rawat that the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) could provide land to fish sellers of the city at Kabadi Bazar near bypass road only. He said, the DMC had also taken this decision at its convention, called between December 2 to December 8, two years ago.

He directed the district administration to initiate the shifting process of the shopkeepers from Kalka Mandir Marg to Kabadi Market and also provide land to them as per the policy adapted in regard to the relocation of shopkeepers under other projects in the city.

Chamoli provided the minutes of the convention, which were signed by the then Mukhya Nagar Adhikari Sushil Kumar. As per the minutes of the meeting, Vinod Chamoli said since the place where these shops were situated had been named as Kalika Mandir Marg due to the existence of temple in the vicinity, it would be proper to shift these meat shops from the area to some other area.

The then opposition leader Ashok Verma said since most of the shops were running their operations without any license, they must be removed at the earliest. He found fault with the district administration for the delay.

According to sources, a prominent Congress leader of the area, where Kabadi Bazar is situated, does not want these shops to be shifted in his area. This is considered to be reason that the District Magistrate had asked the DMC to scout for the other piece of land but Chamoli made it clear that they did not have other land for the fish market.

Mutation cases

Mayor Vinod Chamoli said the DMC had cleared all the 10,000 cases of mutation, which came before the corporation in past five years. As no objection was filed by the working committee at the Board meeting, no matters remained pending. Only 275 cases, which came up during the period when the model code of conduct was enforced in the wake of civic body polls, were remaining to wrapped up. He said the cases regarding mutation would also be taken up under the Right to Service.
