Bottom line
We love fashion and we have been romancing it for too long to stop now. Nothing can hold us back from flaunting the most desirable brands, while we define and redefine the utter glory of all that they stand for. However, with the advent of the summer, there is more that the city folks need to worry about than just flaunting their fancy brands. It's time to revamp your wardrobe as we throw some summer fashion tips your way that will help you cool the heat.
Airy and stylish
Palazzos All and about: Firstly, what are palazzos? Well, palazzos are a woman's trousers, cut with a loose, extremely wide leg that flared out from the waist and are best worn during the summer. "Palazzos are back in trend and if you fancy wearing these pants, make sure that you are tall, or at least, 5 feet and three inches tall," says Sahiba J Singh, a city-based designer. Team it right: That palazzos are available in flowing material, including crapes and georgettes, you need to be very careful of what you team those up with. On that, Sahiba further adds, "If you are wearing palazzos, make sure you wear a fitted top. A nice chiffon office blouse will serve for an evening wear. Avoid wearing tops with sleeves along with palazzos." Also, unless you want to invite unnecessary attention for all the wrong reasons stay away from palazzos if you are bottom-heavy. "Palazzos only complement a reed-thin type of figure," says Sahiba, saving you from making a fashion faux pas. Colour wheel: No, you don't want to look like a Christmas tree in the middle of the summer and for that we'll give you the right colours that will complement your perfect summer look. "Palazzos look best in light shades like beige, khaki green and subtle shades of blue. However, you can always wear a dark coloured top that goes along with it," says Sahiba.
Casual chic
Fisher pants All and about: Fisher pants are the wide pants that are tied on the waist while overlapping one end over the other. These are your perfect pick for the summer and a relief from the usual summer dresses, unless you still like playing with Barbie dolls. "Since fisher pants are essentially made of cotton, they complement any body type, from thin to normal. However, if you are too busty or bottom heavy, stick to denims," says Mini Sondhi, a Chandigarh-based designer. Team it right: Rule number one, fashion is not about what you wear, it's about how you wear it and when it comes to flaunting the casual fisher pants, you really don't want to go wrong. Mini opines, "Team up your fisher pants with a fitted ganji and you are ready to go. Also, for the evening wear you can accessorise your look with a neck piece and a belt." Colour wheel: "Personally, I love colour and fisher pants look best in earthy tones, but if you are daring enough, you can also wear neon coloured pants. Since the colour of you top reflects directly on your face, wear colours that suit you," she signs off.
Ripped and tattered
Torn denims All and about: "How can you possibly go wrong with the classics?" asks Anuj Sharma, a Mumbai-based designer, as he starts to detail upon the torn-rugged denims. "Torn pants look good on anyone and everyone, provided that the jeans are not torn in a way that it looks over the top. A little cut on the knees and lower thighs is a great way to tear off the denims." Team it right: "You can team up your torn denims with anything and everything," he says, while adding, "Torn denims lend a very Boho chic look to your personality but one has to make sure that you are carrying them off with a lot of confidence." Colour wheel: "When it comes to denims, the darker, the better," says Anuj as he adds, "I think light coloured denims look good too, only it should not be patchy and acid washed."
Short & sweet
Short pants All and about: Considering the rise in temperature, it's about time you made it even hotter while flaunting a nice pair of shorts and your legs. Short pants are in thing this summer. "One should definitely opt for the linen and cotton shorts this season. Most of the stores are also offering short pants in muslin, which is also a good summer fabric as it helps in soaking sweat," says Ritu Kochhar, founder director, INIFD. Team it right: "You can team your shorts with the nice floral tops or ganjis. If you have a waist size of 26 to 28, you can tuck in your tops, but if your waist size is above 30, I suggest that you cover the hip area. Also, stripes and check shirts are in these days," shares Ritu. Colour wheel: As Ritu details on how to wear your short pants right, she says, "The neon colours, that were to hit the rack in autumn, are already in the stores now and are really working very well. However, you can also opt for floral prints and pastel shades if you like to keep it simple."

Breaking free…literally
Search for new is what Gul Chauhan is interested in. Post retirement, he has continued to write and on Wednesday, he released his sixth collection of short stories titled Bunty Bazaar.
Gul has taught Hindi, read English and chose to write in Punjabi. "I feel I can best express myself in Punjabi," says the writer who is fond of Samuel Beckett and Henri Miller. "I am not for writers who follow the line, but those who break free and present something fresh." Krishna Baldev Vaid, an experimental Hindi writer too figures in Gul's favourite list! "Not only I read but also follow the freshness in subject. When others were afraid, I brought bedroom stories out." Bunty Bazaar has 15 stories from the present times. Societal norms have undergone a change, and no more things are in black and white. Materialism has seeped in all aspects of life, including relationships. A common middle-class man caught in the present intricacies is what Gul has written about. A typical household—busy IT couple, a mother-in-law to look after their child—and how their equation is marred in love and exploitation are the situations around which his stories revolve. "In today's era of globalization, everything is salable, even relationships," says Gul, who loves to keep intriguing names for his books. While the recent one is Bunty Bazaar, his earlier collections have been Sidepose, Dachian de Jaan Pichhon and Reshman da Panjva Chiragh, Ik Chauras Taqlif and Baby Ghar. His novel June '85 has been turned into a TV serial. On he is with his another novel Tota Gali. mona@tribunemail.com

Designed to perfection
He sounds unassuming, yet suave; expressive and articulate without being loud. A balance of pace and pause is visible in his effortless, understated designs and minimalism. Noted fashion designer Rajesh Pratap Singh was in Ludhiana for a tie-up with the Shingora Textiles for a special collection of scarves.
The designer started his own line two years after graduating from NIFT, New Delhi, and has over the years become synonymous with simplicity and detailing. His clothes have a global appeal yet remain passionately Indian. He has showcased his work abroad, including Milan and Paris, apart from India. A firm believer in Indian fashion, he says that following China is not the way forward for India. "India doesn't have to create and design for mass market." He adds, "I have always believed in the use of natural fibre be it wool, cotton, linen etc, unless there is a 'technical' need to do so. Wool can also be used for summer as well, as wool is an insulator." Rajesh is pushing for wider use of wool, as he believes it can be really beneficial at the village level and rural sector. In his Green Fashion Show, Rajesh has showcased a collection of hand-woven and hand-spun special organic cotton and eco-friendly material. The versatile designer has not only won praise for his collections abroad, but he has also worked with various textile mills in research and development. He is working with Shingora for use of wool in new ways as well. Apart from his exclusive stores, he has presence in multi-brand stores also. "Work is all lined up for my shows in Bhutan, Shingora's collection in Ludhiana, Delhi and in Paris again this year," he says.

Landmark canvas
When art accounts for an imperceptible difference between influence and inspiration, the silent colours speak volumes. In artist Balu Sadalge’s steady stream of works, the entire country is his canvas. The bazaars, the spices, the pavements, the ghats, the crowds, the temples…there is a fragment of spectacular India in each of his paintings.
“During college days, we’d stop for a month at each of the places in South India and try to capture various monuments, temples, structures in our paintings,” shares the artist from Karnataka, during his first solo exhibition in Chandigarh. “The subjects remain heavily influenced by those places and those days.” It’s been 12 years of indulging in architectural (temple) and landscape themes. To begin with there are the spectacular ghats of Varanasi, Kopeshwar Temple, Maharashtra, structures that are a screaming, shouting proof of India. “You can recognise India instantly from my paintings. When you look at them, you know it’s some part of the country.” There are elements like cows, crows, pigeons, huts, earthen structures, sellers in the bazaars of India, intricate carvings of the monuments, the stairs, Indian women in muted but colourful sarees. “For me, it’s the monuments of Humpi that are an artist’s paradise. But nature remains one of the biggest inspiration.” He adds, “It’s only the sketches that happen on the spot and various other elements are introduced later. But physical presence of the sight or scene is a must. One has to be there in front of the structure.” There is generous use of colour and play of light and shadow in each of the works, to bring alive the Indian tradition and culture. “Apart from the use of light and shadow, I use knife technique in my paintings.” The 15 oil on canvas, largely, share a common thread of the southern part of the country. “I have been planning to capture the mountains for a long time now. Someone asked me to visit the Golden Temple and paint that in my next collection. For that, I’ll have to visit the place and am planning to do so.” The captions and titles are conspicuous by their absence but that’s how it was intended. “I want the viewers to form their interpretations and connect with the works, but for some reason if they can’t, it’s open to their imagination and interpretation.” Here’s the mystic India, customised. manpriya@tribunemail.com On till May 25 at Art Portfolio—9C, Madhya Marg, Chandigarh

The turtle’s in town
When it comes to bars, a couple of years ago, Chandigarh had few options, most of which offered a stale set of crowd and a sitting area that could accommodate only 50 odd visitors, so we would often head to the clubs saying, “Well, where’s the choice?”
To your utter relief, the city now beckons Delhi’s best bar, Underdoggs, at the Elante Mall. You are now in a relationship with sports, entertainment, luxury and good food, so it’s time to stop making compromises. As the fancy escalators take you to the third floor, a certain kind of energy envelops you and you know that you’re only so close to the only sports bar in the city. It gives you butterflies if you love cricket more than your girlfriend or wife. Needless to say, the delight rises to alarming degrees as you walk straight in and take a look around only to find as many as five pool tables, a table football and a bar that offers as many as 15 types of beers, signature mocktails and cocktails. If you are a sports lover, congratulations! You found yourself a home away from home. “The main idea behind this concept was to provide the sports lovers with entertainment, good food and a space where they could be comfortable. This place invites a set of friends and families who are looking for a good time. Also, the seating arrangement has been done in a way that it provides minimum intrusion in their space,” says Rish Saini, the owner of the place. As he engages in an interesting banter that details on his journey right from starting this venture, he shares, “Underdoggs comes from the word underdog, and we have all been underdogs in our lives at one point or another. So, I think people relate to it. In fact, this was not our family business, we sold all our property and took a risk as we started out this venture. Also, I like the turtle, which is our mascot, probably because it is an underdog too,” he laughs. Rish considers Chandigarh to be a good market for his brand as he opines, “I chose to bring Underdoggs to this city, primarily because of the location and I’m surprised to see the popularity that it has grabbed in only a week’s time. Also, we promote all kinds of sports that are telecast on the television, be it cricket, soccer or Olympics.” If you are still not convinced, put on your jogging shoes and run straight to Underdoggs.

Natural beauty
As we run in the pursuit of a satisfying life, we stop taking care of our skin and our health altogether. Even when we head out to parties, we apply thick coats of make-up to cover up our blemishes and make our skin look perfect. Yes, that does work out pretty well, but it’s as harmful as wrapping a plastic sheet around our skin.
OFI (Officina Farmaceutica Italiana) is all set to introduce a product line BDL (Bottega Di Lungavita), a renowned Italian brand to the Indian market considering our skin requirements and the condition of the weather. And it’s all natural! Product range Starting from skin care, food supplements and medical devices, the fusion of natural products with a scientific base to it is what makes the product line desirable. Under the label Bottega Di Lungavita, the company will soon be introducing around 300 products in the market. “We hope to expand once the basic products are established in the country,” says Arjun Khurana, director, SCPL. Nature meets technology Dealing with cosmetics isn’t a piece of cake. “The technology we use is purely based of the research wherein the DNA of the body is refined to regenerate and nourish the skin cells. What better than to process it with natural ingredients produced by pure spring water?” says, Dr Egidio Chinati, founder, OFI, Italy. Indian market “The Indian market requires a lot of age blocking, wrinkle and blemish correction, anti-stretch marks and skin whitening products along with extremely effective sun protection cream like SPF 70. Also, we will be bringing products for mother and baby care, men and older people,” says Arjun. The brand “We have made products in association with brands like Shahnaz Husain, Revlon, Colliester (Europe), Sanofi Aventis (Europe), Merc and Pfizer. Apart from that our products have been in the market through websites like firstcry.com and goodlife.com. The products are also sold in spas like Three Graces in New Delhi. And now we are planning to open stores soon in Delhi and Mumbai and the rest of the metro cities. Also, we hope to establish later in Chandigarh, Lucknow and the North-east,” says Sanjiv Khurana, director, SCPL (San Pelligrino). “Our products are also recommended by dermatologists; the response has been great so far.”

Water mark
Sachin Kalra Composing more than half of our body, water plays an essential role in the maintenance of our body and its conduction of normal function. If you plan on exercising regularly, you need to know how to drink water effectively in order to prevent your body from getting dehydrated. Water is essential for anyone who works out, because it helps rid your body of the toxins that are released from your muscles during a typical workout session. It also helps to replenish the water lost by the body due to sweating. It is very important to drink the right amount of water before, during, and after your workouts. Dehydration can make it hard to reap maximum benefits from your workouts, and in extreme situations, can even be dangerous to your health. It is an accepted fact that performance declines with dehydration. However, drinking too much water at the wrong time can also hinder performance. So what needs to be done? Drinking water before exercise Waiting until you're ready to work out to drink water is a big mistake. None of the water that you drink when you start working out makes it into your system quick enough to help your body. Instead, you need to drink water two to three hours before you work out in order to hydrate your body properly. This gives your body plenty of time to get hydrated and prepare for a workout. Hydration is particularly important for the morning workout enthusiast. They need to have a glass of water shortly after rising so as to give their body adequate time to hydrate. The general guideline is 8-16 oz. (1-2 glass) at least 15-20 min before exercise. Drinking water during exercise Once you've hydrated yourself before exercise, you need to make sure that you stay hydrated while you exercise. As you sweat, the water that you drank before your workout will be lost. Therefore, you need to make sure that you drink about 8 ounces of water for every 10 minutes that you work out. That doesn't mean that you need to stop every 10 minutes to drink. But it does mean that you should be hydrating yourself during every short break that you get (you can even sip water during a run if you have to) in order to get enough water back into your system. Avoid taking huge gulps of water, though, and avoid taking in too much water during a single break as, you may feel full and hurt your workout. The general guideline is 4 -8 oz every 15 minute and if exercising longer than 90 minutes, drink 8-10 oz of a sports drink (with no more than 8 per cent carbohydrate) every 15-30 minutes. Drinking water after exercise In order to help your body regroup, you need to drink plenty afterward as well. When you sweat profusely, your body also loses sodium and potassium. Be sure to replace these nutrients. The general guideline is to weigh your-self before and after exercise and to drink 20-24 oz water for every 1 lb lost. Special case Exercising in the heat or high humidity increases you fluid losses through sweating. If you sweat a lot you are at a greater risk for dehydration. Also, if your workout is particularly long or intense, just drinking plain water during your exercise may not be the best option. Consumption of beverages containing electrolytes and carbohydrates can help sustain fluid-electrolyte balance and exercise performance. Hyponatremia Although rare, athletes can drink too much water and suffer from hyponatremia (water intoxication). Drinking excessive amounts of water can cause a low concentration of sodium in the blood - a serious medical emergency. Normal exercisers needn’t worry about this condition cause under normal circumstances; accidentally consuming too much water is exceptionally rare. (Kalra is a Chandigarh-based fitness expert) |

Fresh faces
in Bollywood!
Siddhanth Kapoor Shraddha Kapoor’s brother and Shakti Kapoor's son made a mark in Shootout at Wadala and got noticed despite a big cast. He is also the lead in Anurag Kashyap's Ugly and is going to Cannes. His future looks bright and sorted. Now if the buzz to be believed then John has made him his protégé.
Sasha Agha She is sexy, pretty and can sing too. She has done same dare-bare scenes in Aurangzeb and there is buzz around Rapunzel, as she is called now because of her lovely long hair. We hope she delivers in Aurangzeb and we get to see more of Salma Agha's happening daughter. There is something sparkling and different about her.
Dhanush He looks awful. We think he must have paid the producers to let him be part of the movie. Sorry if that is rude but it is true. All said and done, we shall give him another chance and see what he does in Raanjhana opposite Sonam Kapoor. He could get typecast in the street-side roles. He does not have a class or personality.
Saqib Salem Brother of Huma Qureshi, Saqib is no less than his talented sister. He made his debut in Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge but it was Mere Dad Ki Maruti that got him much fame. And in his latest film Bombay Talkies, this young actor has proved his versatility as an actor. He even kissed his co-star Randeep Hooda for a scene. He’s one brave actor to watch for!
When Shraddha got lucky
Shraddha Kapoor had a bad start with Teen Patti but now her fortunes have turned around with the success of Aashiqui 2. She talks about making the difficult choices. Aashiqui over Aurangzeb Shraddha Kapoor has to turn down Aurangzeb to pick up Aashiqui 2. She had to forfeit her three-film-deal with Yash Raj Films to do the movie outside the studio. Shraddha is really happy with the choices she made. Her role in Gori Tere Pyar Mein has also been extended to give her more screen time. So she now has a song and dance sequence. Getting over failure I was devastated when Teen Patti flopped but my family told me to pick up the pieces and start afresh. So I continued gymming and my dance classes. I got endorsements to do and Luv Ka The End happened which got me recognition and visibility. The big risk I did the unimaginable. I opted out of my three-film deal with YRF and chose Aashiqui 2 based on my gut feeling. I did not know the results would be so huge! It was difficult to turn down Aurangzeb but I did. Today, everyone is calling me saying that they want to work with me. I am so happy. My hard work has paid off. All thanks to Aditya Aditya Chopra is my mentor. He believed in me when no one else did and gave me strength. I would do a film with him my eyes closed. I would never burn my bridges with YRF. I am really excited about the movies and roles coming my way.

Chitrangada Singh rubbishes rumours
Chitrangada Singh and golfer husband Jyoti Randhawa’s divorce report has created lot of buzz very recently but the actress clarified the report saying that she and her husband are very much together and they are not moving apart and the divorce report is totally baseless. She added that she and Jyoti Randhawa went to Gurgaon court to settle some property dispute. Recently media went abuzz with Chitragada and Jyoti’s divorce news. It was surfaced that the actress is all set to end 12 years of marriage with Jyoti Randhawa. Report suggested that the actress was facing tough time in meeting her film commitments in Mumbai and at the same time looking after her five year-old son, Zorawar. She and her husband were heard to have hired lawyers from Delhi to settle the issue. However, Chitrangada rubbished divorce report. "It is not true. We were at the court for the property dispute, an internal settlement. And there were speculations because of that," Chitrangada said.
Hits & misses
Zombie film Go Goa Gone is doing very well at the box office. It has already collected more than Rs 13 crore which is very good for the movie it is. Gippi got a lukewarm response, collecting just around Rs 3 crore. Aashiqui 2 is still going strong and Shootout at Wadala is a hit. Kashmir calling
Imtiaz Ali is going to go to Kashmir with every movie it seems. The unit shot over there with Randeep Hooda and Alia Bhatt. The scene was about Randeep getting injured and Alia rushing to his rescue. The Highway team is now in Northern states of India.
Image wise
Naseeruddin Shah is one of the most experienced actors in Bollywood. He has advice for the up and coming Huma Qureshi against being slotted. He has asked her to become careful with her choices to avoid being slotted. He also said that the industry is not comfortable with actors they cannot slot. Huma says that she has been lucky with the roles she has got as they are all different and she has no image to live up to.
Together once again
Emraan Hashmi and Kunal Deshmukh have worked together on Tum Mile, Jannat 1 and 2 and they are joining hands once again outside of the Bhatt stable. Kunal is talking to UTV and the discussion is in the final stages. The movie will roll in July. The leading lady is yet to be finalised and the music will be scored by Pritam.

For bigger and better
Pallavi Purohit, who is currently seen in Madhubala-Ek Ishq Aur Ek Junoon, is all set to her Bollywood debut. The buzz is that the famous face on TV, Pallavi aka Padmini, will soon be seen in Subhash Ghai's upcoming movie Kaanchi. She shares, "I can never ever say 'no' to a legendary director like Subhash Ghai. It will be my honour to work with him." About her role she adds, "Well, I will be seen as a politician opposite veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty. I really can't reveal much. But I am sure you will like me in my new avatar."
Ink of expression
Chhavi Mittal loves tattoos. She has four, including her husband's name Mohit. Now, with her daughter Areeza Hussain born in December, she is thinking of inking her baby girl's name too.
Back with a bang
Chandni Bhagwanani, who was earlier seen in the TV show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi as a child actor, is thrilled about her lead role in Amita Ka Amit. We learn more…
How does it feel to play the lead now, considering that you started doing a supporting role as a child actor? It's a completely different experience. Acting is something I love to do which is why I have been acting since I was really young. But doing a lead in a TV show is reaching a different level altogether. How did you bag Amita Ka Amit? I started giving auditions after my high school examinations. I had actually gone to this particular audition to support a friend but while I was there, I too gave an audition and luckily I got the part. It was unbelievable. How is the response for the show? The sweet love story is different yet relatable as it is about an overweight girl and the ups and downs in the journey of her life. I wondered how the show would be received as playing the lead is a big deal. But I am glad people have liked the show so much. Apparently you are really friendly with your co-star Nishad Vaidya? Yes, we are good friends. Both of us have got this big break together. We get along very well and that helps in while we work, even in the romantic scenes. Being a student of mass media how do you manage studies and work? I am pursuing my graduation and while I shoot daily, I ensure to catch up with my studies. It is stressful but everyone on the set is quite helpful.
Sachin quits
Sachin Shroff aka Siddharth in Sahara One's show Niyati has quit the show. He didn't want to play dad to actors as old as him as his character now has grown up kids. He will be seen in the show till the end of this month.
End of 2613
Trying a new show is always tricky. 2612 and its season 2, won acclaim but not the TRPs. So, the show will end this month and will be replaced by a new one Do Dil Ek Jaan.
