When the heart rules
Author Sonia Golani has showcased the stories of people who gave up successful careers to be where they are in her second book My Life, My Rules...

PEN FRIEND: Sonia Golani

How to be successful in your career; if there is someone out there writing a book on it (well this is one of the most researched question), we must warn because the answer lies within you! Right with you, right inside your heart; all you need to do is hear it correctly.

The answer to the question is — follow your heart’s calling to be successful. Sonia Golani, the author of My Life, My Rules, apart from listening to her husband’s and kids, spared a moment to follow where her heart was taking her to. She was already dabbling in a successful career in consultancy when she had a creative itch to dig out something refreshing and purposeful; thus followed her first book, Corporate Divas, which featured 18 successful women in the corporate world. Her second book published by Westland, My life, My Rules, features 18 successful people from various fields. It finally comes to one thing -following the heart and making your own rules. Sonia looks at her husband Dilip and smiles, “Let’s just say for me, it was our rules. Both my husband and I have taken decisions that have complemented each other,” shares Sonia visiting Chandigarh with her better half to talk about the book.

Meeting people, getting to know them on a more real level is what has been the basis of two of her books. “In Corporate Divas I wanted to know what sustained the ladies on leadership positions. As for My Life, My Rules, I have unraveled the stories of people who followed their passion; who gave up successful careers to be where they are,” she says, going through the pages of the book that features personalities such as Harsha Bhogle, Nalin Khanduri, Rahul Narasimha Ram, Rashmi Uday Singh et al.

It would be unfair to ask the writer to take her pick out of the lot. Sonia smiles, quiet expecting the question, “All of them; they have this common streak of following passion. In the end, we decide what is good for us; we cannot follow any career blindly. I wanted to share stories of people who have made it in different fields.” Sonia’s next book is on the famous personalities of Bollywood and she has already started working upon it.

We take a different route during the interaction, which makes us look at IIM’s, IITans and corporates turning to writers. A small, ‘I–know-that’ smile explodes on her face. “Well, you can say a lot of them. You should also know that they haven’t taken these decisions out of the blue. The change comes in gradually, but then again they did what they always wanted to.”

Storming a male bastion
National award-winning filmmaker Janaki Vishwanathan believes in the power of her work and persistent efforts…
Jasmine Singh

Janaki Vishwanathan
Screen presence: Janaki Vishwanathan

An advertisement shows a journalist asking actor Shah Rukh Khan why an actress’ name comes after an actor’s name! SRK takes the issue pretty seriously and decides to bring the actress’ name before the actor. Cut!

Janaki Vishwanathan, a National Award-winning filmmaker with two Tamil films and several documentaries to her credit, on the other hand, wonders why there is nothing like ‘men directors’ just as ‘women directors’. As Janaki turns her creative radar towards directing her first Hindi film, Bakrapur, the director has clarity on just about everything.

We start with the awards her work have fetched and whether they have set a benchmark for her next projects. Janaki doesn’t take time to think…“I don’t believe in sitting on the laurels forever. They are of course a token of appreciation, but they don’t pose any hurdle. My films are generally based on social issues, if the audiences like them, it is the biggest award,” she says.

A journalist by training, Janaki’s debut Kutty (Little One) won two National Awards apart from the Gollapudi Srinivas Memorial National award for best debutante director in 2001. The film was also part of the Panorama at IFFI in 2001. It won the Special Jury Prize at the Cairo International Film Festival for Children. Her second film Kanavu Meippada Vendum (Dreams Must Come True) was screened at the IFFK in 2004 and was also part of the Cairo International Film Festival apart from being screened at festivals in Holland and Italy.

It is her first Hindi film Bakrapur that she likes to talk about now. “I don’t make over-the-top effort to be different in my films, my heart should be in place and the subject should be clear,” she smiles as she moves on to talk about the movie Bakrapur.

“It is a social satire that focuses on the herd mentality of Indians. It shows the relationship between eight-year-old boy and his pet goat. It is also a take on the complex belief systems and superstitions in our society,” shares Janaki, who chooses satire to present her story. Cinema to her has a universal language and thus showcasing at film festivals is fine as long as the subject in the film reaches to a wider audience.

It is, however, the social issues that she has zeroed-in for her works, dealing sensitively with each one of them. A woman director doing wonders… “Why don’t we say men directors? It is good that women are doing great work in direction as well. Films have a universal language so it doesn’t matter whether it is made by a man or a woman.”

Hair we go!
Here's a quick check on the latest hairstyles for the summer…
Gurvinder Singh

models sport the summer hairstyles for the season
mane matters: models sport the summer hairstyles for the season

You might have 'ironed' your hair during the last couple of seasons, but now the straight look is quickly fading away from the fashion scene. "Waves and curls are in now," says Gaurav Gupta, from P&G Salon Professional. "The industry here in India is influenced by Bollywood," says Jyotsna, another trainer at the organisation. "A lot of stars nowadays are sporting the wavy look," she adds.

Hairstyle makes a world of difference to one's personality. For example, really long and loose hair accentuate short height while the cut for someone having broader cheek bones has to be done below the chin to frame the face. "A lot depends on the facial features of the individual, the kind of hair and also personal preferences when it comes to hairstyles," says Gaurav.

"How well a hairdresser plays with the lines (straight cuts), layers that cause wavy hair and gradation, which means adding volume to the hair, depends on the individual and also on the training of the hair expert," he adds.

Colour code

With the advent of summer, not only the attire changes but also the entire look. "People are generally going for cooler colours in summer, so blues and violets are in," says Jyotsna. "A lot of people have started going for shocking colours like greens, purple, and vibrant blues. Neon colours are also in, but cool colours for summer are more in demand," she adds.

Special treatment

Hair treatment options at salons are also increasing. System Professional Alchemy offers 100 personalised solutions for different needs. Their treatment was introduced in the country for the first time at Ludhiana.

"Beauty industry is growing and India is an emerging market," according to Rob Samet, Country Manager, P&G Salon Professional. "Punjab is an upcoming market and people in Ludhiana have high income. This is the reason why we have introduced System Professional's Alchemy Hair treatment here," he adds.

a still from Aashiqui 2Aashiqui 2
Directed by Mohit Suri, Aashiqui 2 is a romantic-action film. Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar and Mukesh Bhatt, the film stars Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead roles. Aashiqui 2 is a musical love story of Rahul Jaykar (Aditya Roy Kapoor) and Arohi Shirke (Shraddha Kapoor) and it evokes the intense moments of love and hate, twists and turbulence, success and failure in their lives. Will they accept their success and live life together or do their egos separate them forever, watch the film to find that out, but meanwhile read what the city folks have to say about the film.

A different rhythm
I like the storyline of the film and honestly, it was quiet worth the watch. Though the film rolls on the lines of its prequel, there is defiantly a streak of originality that defines this film while giving it a whole new perspective. In fact, I like characters in the film more than anything.
Aastha Walia, student at PEC

Love and ego
I was reminded of the film, Abhimaan when I saw Aashiqui 2. There are these intense moments of ego clashes, which are similar to those shown in Abhimaan. Also, the story is pulled of on a very tried and tested formula, so there was no risk involved. I would not go and watch it again.
Aayush Thapar, student

Recreating the magic
I really liked the movie. Well, maybe my opinions are overshadowed with my hopeless romantic disposition, but I really loved the romance in the movie and the storyline too. It is definitely a one time watch.

Iron Man 3
Iron Man 3 is a American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character, Iron Man, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Directed by Shane Black, this film is based on the Extremis story arc by Warren Ellis. While Robert Downey Jr. plays the lead role, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, and Favreau play the roles of Pepper Potts, James Rhodes, and Happy Hogan, respectively.

Re-defining excellence
You would not know what action is until you watch this film. Let's spare the 3D effects for a moment, the storyline and the characters are so powerful that this film turns out to be a larger than life experience. I would rate the film above average and Robert Downey Jr. surely scores extra points for both, his acting skills and good looks.
Puniti Walia, student

Better than the best
If you are an Iron Man movie fan, then you are sure to have a list of priorities where you would like to rate the series. In my opinion, Iron man 3 is much better than its prequels. Also, the 3D effects and the storyline make it a must watch for all those who like sensible action that is based on an effective storyline.

Lucknawi andaaz!
The Awadh Food festival at Kava, Chandigarh, lays out a mouth-watering delicacies for you…
Tanya Malhotra

Platter Full: Ghulam Rasool The success of the Awadh Food Festival last year ushers in the second edition at Kava, Chandigarh, where Ghulam Rasool, the famous chef from Lucknow, is sure to delight the foodie in you with his delectable delicacies.

Chef corner

Some people are like wine - they get better with age. To introduce Ghulam Rasool, we go back to the era of Jawahar Lal Nehru, Farookh Abdullah and Rajeev Gandhi, when he was the hot favourite of these legends! Since that time, carrying the legacy of the food of Lucknow, he has walked his way successfully towards the modern era. While everything turned around, got blended and modified over the years, what hasn't changed is the charm in his cooking. At present, living in early eighties, he carries a rich experience of forty years while he freelances and spreads the roots of his tradition worldwide by training chefs, conducting seminars and much more. Ghulam has also travelled across the world to present his recipes.

Magic hands

When you grab a bite and the food just melts in your mouth like cheese, you can't help but wonder how he did that! Is there a secret ingredient? He says, "Slow cooked food is how I do it; and that's how the food was cooked for the Nawabs in earlier times. However, when we talk about the taste, it all comes down to the magic in your hands. I remember this one time when I had to cook food for Rajeev Gandhi in ten minutes, now that was completely opposite to how I like to work and I wouldn't deny that I made the dish in anguish, but the result was still fantastic. I just used minced chicken to cook a kebab, nothing special! Yet he couldn't help but praise it. Till now, I call it the Gussey (anger) ka Kebab (he laughs)."

Lucknawi influence

I wouldn't deny the fact that since I belong to Lucknow, the taste of my region is most marked in whatever I cook. For instance, Biryani essentially is a Hyderabadi delicacy, but how we play with the masalas makes it all the more unique." He adds, "Although for specialties like kebabs, we do bring the special potli masala from Lucknow to add to the essence."

His favourite

From scrumptious starter to soups and salads, from an assortment of breads to the delectable dishes on the full-fledged menu, each dish is worth a try. Although when it comes to favourites, Ghulam has his own 'must-try list'. "Samundari Ratan and the Raan Mussalan, which goes perfectly with the raita and the veg biryani," he says.

Price wise

The starters range from Rs 300 to Rs. 350 for veg and Rs 400 to Rs 1,111 for non-veg. The soups and salads range between Rs 150 and Rs 225. The main dishes start from Rs 250 and go up to Rs. 400 for veg and Rs 1,111 for non-veg. The desserts start from Rs 150 and go up to Rs 200.

Doc Talk
Stay away from fizz!
Dr Vineeta Munjal

Summer is here and one of the more preferred ways to 'chill' these days is to have a carbonated beverage. While it is easy for youngsters to dismiss talk of the empty calories loaded in these beverages, these may not be the right choice for a pregnant woman.

Most obstetricians do not recommend the intake of carbonated beverages during pregnancy. There are reasons why obstetricians advise against the intake of carbonated beverages during pregnancy.

Caffeine is harmful

A number of popular carbonated beverages clearly mention on the bottle cover that the drink contains caffeine. High consumption of products that contain caffeine has been associated with miscarriage. Caffeine makes your body lose calcium. Calcium is one of the major supplements a woman takes at the time of pregnancy. It is significant for building the baby's bones and teeth. If the body loses calcium through excessive intake of caffeine, it will harm both the infant and the mother-to-be. Caffeine also disturbs one's sleep pattern. During the difficult months of pregnancy, the mother may find that even small amounts of caffeine are disturbing her regular sleep hours.

Artificial sweeteners

Saccarin, an artificial sweetener used in diet beverages, has been associated with birth defects in laboratory tests. Small doses of other artificial sweeteners and colours are not likely to cause any harm but since exhaustive research has not been done on this subject, it is advisable to stay away from these artificial ingredients as much as possible. Enough study has not been done on the effect of artificial colours on pregnancy.

star track
In conversation with Amitabh Bachchan

It's been a while since Amitabh Bachchan was seen on silver-screen. We will soon see him in Prakash Jha's next film Satyagrah. He recently finished shooting for the film. He talks about the film, his love for cinema, gender equality and more.

Out of the scene

I miss the camera each moment and each day. But my absence was deliberate, or rather, the one that needed to be looked upon with some degree of caution and compulsion. I had two surgeries during the early part of 2012 and I was advised to restrict my work load. I have just finished shooting Prakash Jha's film and I am looking forward to it.

In the recent past

I enjoyed many and was most impressed by the fresh talent invading our film firmament. Paan Singh Tomar, Gangs of Wasseypur, Kahaani, Vicky Donor, Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, Dabangg 2, Bol Bachchan ... all were enjoyable. Well, I notice a marked shift in the appreciation level of our audiences. The industry is coming up with great subjects. Not only are the films being presented well but the makers are also giving an opportunity to new faces each day. This is true not just for Hindi cinema but the entire regional cinema as well.

Centre of his attention

All our activities are centered around Aaradhya and her timings. Her progress in speech and behaviour is most endearing and is closely followed. Her presence brings joy to us.

On Gujarat

My association with Gujarat is confined to its tourism. We have been able to achieve great interest in the region. The numbers have increased exponentially and there is rapid work being executed in the building of infrastructure to cater to the growing tourist visitors. I am non-political so I shall not be able to answer the other part of your question. But the victory of Narendra Modi is the outcome of a democratic election process and we respect that.

On the Delhi rape-case

I strongly feel that not just cinema but all our public mediums should conduct exercises to look within and ascertain what can be done to rid ourselves of this very grave situation. Every powerful medium, that has the capacity to form opinion, should make all efforts to give this situation in our society a primary spot, to make aware, to repair, to comment, so that such acts are not only erased but when perpetrated, be dealt with the severest punishment.

One stone, two birds

Actress Parineeti Chopra is miffed with the reports that she is losing weight for an upcoming Karan Johar production, Hasee Toh Phasee. She denies specifically losing weight for the film. In fact, she claims to be losing weight to look her best. Either ways Parineeti, we hope you do really lose some weight.

Language no bar

Tamil actor Dhanush's wife, Aishwarya, is floored by his Hindi in the trailer of his debut Bollywood movie Raanjhanaa.

'The trailer of Raanjhana is out !!! Omg I love it :-):-) check it out ...love my hindi talking @dhanushkraja,' she tweeted. Dhanush, who underwent training for fluency in Hindi language for the film, has dubbed for the role.

Fair and square

Kalki Koechlin Actress Kalki Koechlin, who is married to filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, is quite a competent actor and knows the craft. However, she says that she is not interested in directing a film. She would not mind directing plays but she is not interested in going behind the cameras for a commercial film. Well, fair enough!

Loud and cheers!

With Bollywood celebrating 100 years of cinema, it seems that Cannes is going to be about Indian cinema as well. Actress Vidya Balan will be joining the jury panel of 66th Cannes Film Festival, which includes names like Hollywood star Nicole Kidman, director Ang Lee and the president Steven Spielberg. Vidya is excited!

The balancing act

If the grapevine is to be believed then Arjun Kapoor's step mother, Sridevi, is taking a keen interest in his career and is really excited about his upcoming film Aurangzeb. Arjun and his sister Anshula are children from Boney Kapoor's first wife Mona.

According to reports, Sridevi makes sure that her producer-husband also spends quality time with Arjun and Anshula as he does with Sridevi's daugther Khushi and Jhanvi. Well, that's sweet of her!

Married and loving it

Actor-singer Justin Timberlake reveals his marriage to actress wife Jessica Biel as a "really good decision".

The Suit and Tie hit maker, who tied the knot with Biel in Italy last October, said that he is pleased he married his best friend, reported a publication online. "Every once in a while I catch a glimpse of her when she doesn't see me looking, and I have this moment where I'm like, 'If you never make a good decision - if you only make bad decisions for the rest of your life - you've made one really good decision.

It's nice to marry your friend. It's nice to marry your best friend. It suits me," he said.

Biel had previously revealed that her favourite thing about being married is being able to call Timberlake her husband. "It feels nothing has changed, and yet, everything's changed. It's like that intangible thing, you can't quite put your finger on it... But the word husband is pretty amazing," she had said. — PTI

Cannes calling

If the latest buzz is to be believed then starlet Sherlyn Chopra will be seen walking the red carpet at the 66th Cannes Film Festival. She will be accompanied by director Rupesh Paul. The two will be there to promote their upcoming film KamaSutra 3D. They will also unveil the KamaSutra Booth, a new poster and trailer of the film, at the Cannes Film Festival. Well, we wonder what Chopra will be wearing for Cannes.
