Sluggish real estate market upsets GLADA plans
Ludhiana, April 26
The Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) had gone on an overdrive to sell commercial sites, built-up properties and residential flats in April to mop up the much-needed resources for several ongoing projects. The persistent slowdown in the real estate sector has, however, upset its apple cart with the four auctions conducted so far yielding results much lower than the expectations.

With the onset of the summer season, the worries of the ill-equipped Health Department have also increased manifold as experts fear more cases of water and vector-borne diseases this year as compared to last year. The department is already grappling with poor infrastructure and a shortage of manpower.

NRI’s murder: Wife, paramour awarded life imprisonment
Ludhiana, April 26
Additional Sessions Judge Paramjit Singh has convicted Kulwinder Kaur (30) of Guru Gian Vihar, Dugri, Phase I, and her paramour Balwinder Singh, alias Amni (29), of Lahil village, Dehlon, on a charge of killing NRI Kiranjit Singh.

Two killed in road accidents
Ludhiana, April 26
Listening to songs on the mobile phone by using headphones proved costly for a youth, Jagdev Singh (17), a resident of Kakka Dhaula village, who died when his cycle hit a police bus on Tajpur Road here today. As the youth was listening to songs, he could not hear the horn near a turn as a result of which his cycle hit the police bus.

Shopkeeper levels corruption charges against Health Dept officials
Jagraon, April 26
High drama was witnessed in Jagraon today evening when a local shopkeeper openly levelled corruption charges against some senior officials of the District Health Department. The shopkeeper has also reported the matter to the local police in this regard though no case was registered till the filing of this report.

MA-I students shine in university exams

Ludhiana: Students of the Khalsa College for Women have achieved outstanding results in MA Semester- I examinations. The results were declared by Panjab University on April 17. Manpreet Kaur has bagged first position in the university exams by scoring 362/400 marks (90.5 per cent). Jasmeet Kaur bagged sixth position in the university exams by scoring 349/400 marks (87.2 per cent) and Krishna has bagged seventh position in the uni9versity exams by scoring 348/400 marks (87 per cent). All other students who had appeared in the examination have secured more than 74 per cent marks. The managing committee congratulated Principal Dr Varin, staff members of the fine arts department and the students for their sincere efforts in generating excellent results in university exams.

Class XI students can now study theatre
Ludhiana, April 26
Students can now take theatre studies as an elective subject for Class XI from the current academic session. Students can take the subject as an elective subject with any combination of three other electives and a language. It will have a theory paper of 70 marks and 30 marks for a case-study based project and viva-voce.

Labourer rapes 12-year-old
Ludhiana, April 26
In a shocking incident, a 25-year-old man has been arrested for raping a 12-year-old minor girl, a daughter of a migrant worker. When the accused committed crime, the victim’s family was sleeping on the rooftop of their house. The accused has been identified as Ram Sharan, a resident of Jagdishpura Mohalla on the Tajpur Road, here.

Apparel council ties up with Japanese federation

Apparel makers are seeking the help of Japanese designers to keep up with the fast-changing fashion trends in the land of the rising sun. Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) has tied up with Japan Textile Federation for this purpose. A Japanese delegation is expected to be visiting some of the garment exporters in the city.

103-yr-old woman’s body donated for research
Jagraon, April 26
A middle class family from Rasoolpur village near Jagraon had set a very good example for the others by donating the dead body of an elderly woman who died at the age of 103 years for medical research. The family members of the elderly woman, Tej Kaur, who died yesterday, have donated her dead body to the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) Ludhiana for medical research.

Third accused arrested in robbery case; 1 still at large
Jagraon, April 26
The local police has arrested another accused wanted in connection with an alleged robbery that took place outside a jewellery showroom in the Old City area of Jagraon 10 days ago. The accused has been identified as Prince, a resident of Jagraon.

Thief held with mini-bus
Mandi Ahmedgarh, April 26
The local police has arrested a vehicle thief and recovered a mini-bus that had been stolen from a factory at Bilga village near Sahnewal on Wednesday. The accused has been identified as Amritpal Singh of Kanganwal village in Sangrur district. The investigating team is yet to identify another accomplice of the accused.

The local police has arrested a member of snatchers' gang active in the area for past several months though his accomplice managed to escape. The accused arrested by the police has been identified as Gurpreet Singh alias Rocky while his accomplice, who managed to escape, has been identified as Harvinder Singh.

Grocery store owner held for drug peddling
Ludhiana, April 26
A grocery store owner has been arrested by the Anti-Narcotics Cell and medicines used as drugs have been recovered from his possession. When the accused was arrested, he was on his way to deliver these drugs to his customers.



 

Hardeep beats Ajay in tennis tournament

The concluding day of the HTA-AITA Prize Money Tennis Tournament (men and women) held at Harvest Tennis Academy, Jassowal, near here today was a glorious day for Hardeep Singh Sandhu. In the men's final, Hardeep of Harvest Academy overpowered Ajay Yadav 6-1, 2-0 in what can be called a tough match. In the women’s section, Samriti beat Vineeta Singh 6-3, 6-3 in another intense match.

The three-day tie between Ludhiana and Chandigarh in the ongoing Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournament (U-16) for ML Markan Trophy played at SCD Government College ground here today remained unresolved. But on the basis of first innings lead of 58 runs, the visitors were declared victorious.
