High
on life
“It had nothing to do with gear or footwear or the backpacking fads or philosophies of any particular era or even with getting from point A to point B. It had to do with how it felt to be in the wild. With what it was like to walk for miles with no reason other than to witness the accumulation of trees and meadows, mountains and deserts, streams and rocks, rivers and grasses, sunrises and sunsets. The experience was powerful and fundamental. It seemed to me that it had always felt like this to be a human in the wild, and as long as the wild existed it would always feel this way.” Sheryl Strayed, the author of best-selling novel Wild returned from lost to found after the sudden adventurous spin, which she undertook one fine day.
She came closer to herself, a feeling that most people who head for an adventure activity return with. Now, with the sun making a stronger appearance than before, it is time for some new experiences. The season for adventure sports begins…bikers sparkle their machines, trekkers pack up their bags…it’s time for some adventure.
In the wilderness
Some people can’t sit still; they will roll out their maps and pack their bags whenever they hear the word adventure. Loveraj Singh Dharmshaktu has trekked entire India; he meekly shares, “I have been involved in adventure activities for as many as twenty-three years now. I have trekked at places like Sikkim, Darjeeling, Garhwal, Kumaon and Europe.” Loveraj has walked in the lonely pathways of the Mt Everest almost four times. “I am not driven by time of the season; whenever it is feasible I head for a journey. All these treks, climbs and walks have brought me closer to nature,” says Loveraj, who carries a polythene bag with him during the treks to collect garbage. “If you are going for any adventure, make sure you have the right equipment for it,” adds Loveraj, who calls himself a Woodlander, a man who vouches for the sturdiness of Woodland shoes and gear and was part of their project ProPlanet Climb Everest. Vaibhav Nijhowne, hardcore adventure freak, has returned from an eight-day trek to the Siachen glacier. “You can’t get up one fine day and start an adventure. Some amount of prior planning is a must; the place where you will stay, things that you need to carry and some other basic stuff.” Vaibhav lists Rajasthan, Dharamshala, Rishikesh, and stretches from Manali to Leh, Srinagar to Leh, as good routes to be on with your bike. “If you like mountain-biking, April, May and June is the best time to race your bikes in Uttarakhand.” Those who want to nail fear, go for more exotic places. Mitul Dixit, director, Dikshant International School, picks up an activity every year — ski safari in Nendaz (Switzerland) or scuba-diving in Andaman Islands. “It is all about conquering fear,” he smiles. If you are not going that far, Jumpin Heights in Rishikesh offers international standard adventure experience in bungee-jumping, Flying Fox and the Giant Swing — all extreme adventure sports.
Act in time
If you have are thinking of whipping up an adventurous treat for yourself, you can choose from a number of activities. “Trekking to Ladakh, paragliding in Manali, river-rafting in Rishikesh, scuba-diving in Goa or riding on the highest motorable road in the world, Khardung La, there is no dearth of options in adventure sports,” says Hardeep Singh Atwal, a banker who has planned a trip to the Nubra Valley. Hardeep, however, feels there are certain problems. “Adventure activities in our country are not handled by professionals; the equipment is generally dicey. Besides, there is an overkill of certain activities and places,” adds the banker, who would rather pick undiscovered places each time rather than going to the popular spots.
Trek treat
Walking, running or climbing is about adrenaline and also about finding inner peace. Check out these places.
Manali–Chamba–Sach Pass Trekking Route

In god’s grace
Once a Sufi master was asked a single word that defined Sufism…the answer was instantaneous —LOVE.
In the dogmatic world of today, Sufi shrines have become the point of convergence for people from different backgrounds who are spreading the message of love for each other and God! The festival of Sufi Music & Documentary Films organised by the Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi, which began at the Tagore Theatre on Thursday, brought filmmaker Yousuf Saeed and Qawwal from Rampur, Mohammed Ahmed Warsi, to the city. Yousuf Saeed who has made films on varied subjects got introduced to Sufism through poetry and it took him substantial amount of time to make his film Boojh Sakay To Boojh: The Heritage of Amir Khusrau. Along with this, he brought two of the other films for screening, Basant and Jannat Ki Rail, on Day One of the festival. Religious harmony is what interests Yousuf and this also makes him explore Sufism. “Sufis talk of love and different levels of love. While the ultimate is love for God, the first step is to love those around you,” says Yousuf, who made Boojh Sakay To Boojh some sixteen years back. As for his next film on Amir Khusrau, “For this, I am interviewing lots of people in villages and small towns who have known this practice,” says Yousuf who is disheartened that today anything that’s sung with long alap and heavy beats is passed on as Sufi. Yousuf’s recent film is Making of the Taj. This addresses several misconceptions that revolve around this majestic monument.
Divine calling
Mohammed Ahmed Warsi from Rampur got initiated into Qawwali during his childhood by his elders who have been classical musicians in the Nawab’s court. Six decades on, you name a country and he has performed there. “Qawwali is our paigambar’s call, a prayer that makes you reach the divine,” says Warsi. A packed itinerary, ask him where he gets the energy to keep going and he puts it simply, “Yeh to malik ka karam
hai.” (Starts from 3 pm onwards at the Tagore Theatre) mona@tribunemail.com

Cooking a tale
He rolls up his sleeves, flexes his muscles and jerks his neck…Ripudaman Handa is gearing up for the biggest battle of his life; only this one is happening in the kitchen ring! Ripu, as his friends call him, is one among the twelve who have made it to the Master Chef India finals. He is a gymnasium instructor, who is battling it out in the new arena. “Not new,” he interrupts, “I am fond of cooking. On weekends I generally rustle up something for my family and friends.”
It took an innovative Sushi dish that got him a direct entry into the boot camp. “It was a tough fight, but I guess the charm of my dishes worked on the judges that day.” Cooking is more than a contest for this 23-year-old; it is an art, de-stressing exercise and the next best thing to do after pumping iron at the gym. “Personally, I like to cook food that has nutritional value, which makes me a lesser Punjabi,” he laughs. When it comes to the competition table, Ripudaman likes to follow a simple funda. “A good dish takes time and you cannot cook in hurry. However, at Master Chef I have to do just that. I try to take it easy, give in my best care and finally make sure I present it right,” adds this contestant, who emphasises on presentation of food. “We eat with our eyes first and then apply the rest of the senses, which is why it is important that the dish looks neat and attractive.” Despite best efforts, some days you just can’t get it right. Ripu nods in approval. “Some days it is tough to please all the three judges - Sanjeev Kapoor, Kunal and Vikas Sharma. It is really tough to please Chef Kunal,” he adds.

A Sufi experience
As excellence chases perfection, it wears the hues of experiences, which have long been guided by wisdom. Of Kabir Das and his mysticism, there's much that can be expounded, but only a few explore the simplicity of his thoughts.
At Tagore Theatre on the second day of the sixth Annual Kabir Festival, Jagir Singh and Sawan Khan pursued Kabir's expression of chastity. While Sawan Khan Manganiyar, a sufi musician, who hails from Rajasthan, inextricably merged the soulful melody of his musicality with Kabir's lyrical genius, Jagir Singh, incorporated the religious nuances from Kabir's baani in Guru Granth Sahib which exudes in the serenity Gurumat sangeet. "Soon after I completed my PhD in relation of group poetry with music, I took an intense liking to Kabir's baani that has been mentioned in the Guru Granth Sahib. It was surprising to note the composition of ashtpadhis and the gayan shallies. I am astounded with the Sikh musicology and the alarming degrees to which one can connect with God through music," said Jagir Singh, who has been pursuing this classical art for over 40 years now. "I have been awarded the Shromani Ragi Award and was also conferred with various awards by the Sangeet Natak Akademi for my contribution to Gurmat sangeet," added Singh, who has performed in several countries, including America, England, New Zealand, Iran and Holland. Meanwhile, Sawan Khan, who has a rather rustic charm in both, his musicality and disposition, said, "I care not for the awards or critical acclaim, my music is purely Sufi and it tenders a medium through which I can connect with God. While I sing, I am engrossed and that is what sufi music is all about." Sawan has performed at the MTV Coke Studio apart from performing at various other international avenues across the globe. He belongs to the Manghanyar sect, a renowned group of poets who sing wide repertoire of ancient songs. Sawan sings in Sindh and is the vocalist of the Musafir gypsies of Rajasthan which comprises traditional Rajasthani artists.

No cameo for Big B
Contrary to the buzz, Amitabh Bachchan who played the iconic cop Vijay in Prakash Mehra's Zanjeer in 1973, won't be making an appearance in the remake.
Efforts to get Big B to be part of Zanjeer have failed. Apparently the film's team was enormously keen to get the super-iconic star to do a cameo. A source said, "At the start, Bachchan's other commitments prevented him from putting in a token appearance as a senior cop in the Zanjeer remake but just when it seemed that he would somehow manage to squeeze in the role in his schedule, his beard posed a problem."
Director Apoorva Lakhia said, "Although it would be an honour for any filmmaker to have the iconic actor in his film, Amitji won't be playing a role in Zanjeer. That would put extra pressure on Ramcharan Teja who plays the Angry Cop that Amitji had played in the original Zanjeer."
The Chopra connection
Arjun Kapoor says the surname Chopra follows him closely. He assisted on Salaam-e-Ishq starring Priyanka Chopra, he was launched by Aditya and Yash Chopra, his co-star was Parineeti Chopra and now his co-star is Priyanka Chopra. He feels the Chopra name will follow him everywhere. Moreover, his second and third films are also produced by Aditya Chopra under YRF.
Model and anchor Pravesh Rana, who recently made his Bollywood debut in Tigmanshu Dhulia's Saheb Biwi Gangster Returns, shares his secret for a happy and fit life…
How do you stay healthy? By eating healthy food and working out. What's your eating pattern like? I can't have three meals a day. I've five meals a day. I eat something every two hours as I prefer having my food in small portions. What's your diet like? As soon as I get up, I have a glass of water followed by a glass of fresh juice. My breakfast is usually muesli and egg whites with brown bread. Lunch is very basic. I've mixed vegetables with chicken, brown rice and three chapattis. Then I have my white oats as I workout and post workout I've my protein shake with either a banana or an apple. My dinner is less of carbs and more of protein. Is there anything you avoid eating? Anything with extra oil and sugar. Avoid sweets and anything with too much carbohydrates. Indian food usually has a lot of carbs. How do you unwind? Watch films, they help you divert your thoughts. I also like body massages. I try and get a message once a week because it relaxes you. When are you at your happiest? When I look at the mirror and I'm proud of the reflection. What are your tips for a
happy life? Eat well and sleep well. You will notice it helps you stay happy and less grumpy. Park or gym? I'd prefer the park any day. It's easy for me to make muscles but I try and stay athletic. At parks, you can do freestyle exercises which are very good for your body. The results stay for long. What is the best advice you've ever gotten? Eat your meal two hours before you sleep. Also do not neglect your sleep, eight hours sleep is a must.
Sonakshi gets generous
Sonakshi Sinha has been a part of some of the industry's biggest blockbusters featuring superstars like Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn. But for the first time, she has been featured opposite a younger actor, Ranveer Singh, in the forthcoming Lootera, whose trailer has created major waves. A source said, "Sonakshi has a brilliant role in the film and her stellar performance is bound to bag awards. She is at par with Ranveer in terms of screen time and performance and knows that this film can take her career to an even higher level." Excited by the prospects, Sonakshi has decided to double the time that she usually reserves for promoting her films. Instead of the usual 20 days, she has allotted Balaji 40 days for the pre-release marketing of Lootera. Sonakshi says, "Lootera has been one of the most difficult and satisfying films that I have done.”
Launch pad
Aamir Khan's son Junaid is currently assisting Rajkumar Hirani on PeeKay and was recently spotted walking his dog in Pali Hill, suburban Mumbai. He will probably take up acting in the future, like most other star kids who start behind the camera. He looks nothing like Aamir.
Talking of cinema…
The promo of Bombay Talkies has been launched and looks like quite an achievement in cinema. The film is a tribute to 100 years of cinema. Four short films have been made by Zoya Akhtar, Karan Johar, Dibakar Banerjee, and Anurag Kashyap. Karan has re-invented himself for this project as he tells an unconventional story. Bombay Talkies releases on May 3.
Double role for Kat
Katrina Kaif has been approached to play Seeta and Geeta in the remake of Seeta Aur Geeta. She is fond of Hema Malini and did not even mind producing the film earlier. There is a dispute between the Sippy Brothers regarding the remake. The director has also not been signed on and Katrina and the Sippys are working out the details.
Pleasant surprise
Usha Jadhav, who started her career in cinema with a small role in Madhur Bhandarkar's Traffic Signal, has come a long in just six years. She got termed as bai and would often get rejected for roles because she has average looks and dark skin. But she never got disheartened. Today she stares at the National Award for Best Actress with some disbelief and a lot of gratitude. Usha says, "It does seem a bit unreal. I knew my performance in Dhag had been applauded. But to have beaten all my favourite actresses like Sridevi, Vidya Balan and Priyanka Chopra is something that is yet to sink in. The competition was so tough this year. I didn't think I stood a chance." The role of a mother hoping to see her son make a better life for himself almost fell into Usha's lap. "I heard the director Shivaji Lotan Patil was looking for an actress to play this part. I sent him my pictures and some of my work. And within two days I was on." Being deglamourised for the part didn't require much of an effort. But the dialect did. "It was a different dialect of Marathi from the one that I speak. I had to get a hang of the language that my character had to speak. Beyond that I didn't have to prepare much. But I am surprised that the National Award jury noticed the nuances in my performance. I am grateful to the jury." Usha says she had a premonition that her performance in Dhag would get noticed. "We had screened it for the Marathi film fraternity and someone as distinguished as Sai Paranjpye had compared me to
Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil after watching my performance. That shook me. Before that I didn't think I had done anything remarkable in the film." Usha says she started with Marathi films and hopes to do good work in cinema in any language.
"It doesn't matter to me whether the film is in Hindi or Marathi. It's the role that inspires me. It's good cinema that I look forward to. I'm just passionate about cinema. I still the remember the days when I had no money to train pass or even go for auditions. It's touching to see your hard work finally paying off."
Flop show
Aatma, Rangrezz and Sona Spa are the movies released last week. All three of them received average to poor reviews and have sunk without a trace despite heavy promotions. The disaster of these films has made Jolly LLB and Mere Dad Ki Maruti safe films. Jolly LLB has collected nearly Rs 25 crore so far while MDKM has collected around Rs 7.5 crore.
The recent music launch of Shootout at Wadala grabbed eyeballs because of the growing proximity between Sunny Leone and Tusshar Kapoor. Their chemistry was pretty evident at the launch, what with Tusshar Kapoor stepping in like her knight in shining armor.
Sunny, an adult star, made her first Bollywood appearance in Jism 2. The film did not work as expected, but Sunny Leone became the most searched name after that. In Shootout at Wadala, Sunny Leone has done an item song, Laila Teri Le Legi. Tusshar Kapoor was also heard saying that she also has quite a significant role in the movie. In her song, she will be seen in a desi avatar. At a recent press conference for the same, Sunny went all out to impress the media persons. Although she is not fluent in Hindi, she spoke a few lines in Hindi for the media people and so that she could connect better with her Indian fans. However, she was very apprehensive of speaking in Hindi, and facing the media persons at the same time. Tusshar sensed that and came to her rescue. When she was asked about questions relating to her song, which has sexual undertones, Tusshar helped her with the answers, and told her how to tactfully deal with the same. He also danced with Sunny Leone at the launch of her song Laila. She has found an ardent supporter and friend in him. But when he was asked if he would marry a girl like Sunny Leone, he replied, "Why not!? She is very good-looking, very confident, very talented and also has a way with words. Where else would one get a combination of beauty and brains? Par mera aisa naseeb kahan?" Well, here is some mutual admiration society.

Sanjeeda’s telly tale
Actress Sanjeeda Sheikh is excited about her new show, Zee TV’s Badalte Rishton Ki Daastan. The fact that it is the Hindi version of a Bengali show Khela makes it more appealing to her. She talks about her career and the role.
What appealed to you about Dastaan? I love the story and my character Meera. She is a free-spirited girl, very independent. I love the modern look I don in the show too. The role is challenging as many changes will occur as the story moves forward. How is it working with Additi and Kiran Karmarkar? We all get along really well and both are brilliant actors. It is great when you have a good working atmosphere. You quit one show for the other. Was it easy? It was not easy, but not tough either. I am thankful to Sahara One for giving me Piya Ka Ghar but I stayed on the show for two years before deciding to move on. The show was good but though I had other offers, I didn’t take it. When Dastaan came to me, I knew I couldn’t pass it up. With mutual consent I quit the show and picked up Dastaan. What does your husband Aamir Ali think of your career? He is very happy for me and supports my decisions. I take his advice as he’s in the profession as well. Many TV actors are looking at Bollywood. What about you? I don’t have time to look at films. I am glad to be doing great work on television.

While Sanaya Irani of Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon fame and Drashti Dhami of Madhubala fame are both popular actresses, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa makers are in a dilemma as to whom to choose for the show. As they can have only one popular actress, they are mulling over the names.
