Sound of music
Jonathan Kay and Andrew Kay of Monsoon Duo give ragas a jazzy makeover
Amarjot Kaur

In all its capacity to decipher innovation through improvisation, fusion music has etched a rather global ideation, which transcends all paradigms of geographical and cultural barriers. Now here’s a progression to this genre, only this time, it is infused with the ragas of Hindustani classical music, the sound of which blows through the contemporary jazz instruments—tenor, alto and soprano saxophones.

The pleasant Friday evening at GGDSD College translated into the expression of globalisation as Jonathan Kay and Andrew Kay, classical jazz fusion musicians and members of the band—Monsoon Duo, greeted the audience with a namaste while striking a conversation over a steaming cup of Indian masala chai.

“This is perhaps the third time that we are performing in the city,” says Jonathan, who is accompanied by his brother Andrew. The two had just returned from Shimla in the morning, “We performed at the Gaiety Theatre, Shimla and it’s indeed very satisfying to perform this kind of music in the North. We have seen people taking a liking to it,” says Andrew. While the two talked about their journey in Hindustani classical music, their attire caught all attention—pale white kurtas with dhotis. Now that is the idea of globalisation we were talking about!

The Monsoon Duo has received a grant from the Canada Council of Arts and the Indo-Canadian Shastri Fellowship to live in Kolkata and continue their study on saxophone and Indian classical music under their guru, Pandit Shantanu Bhattacharyya.

“We moved to India six years ago and are being trained in Hindustani classical music for over three years now. We have performed at several music festivals across the globe, including Halifax Jaxx Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Canada, North America and England,” shares Andrew. He is interrupted by Jonathan, “However, performing at the Bengal Music Conference was the best experience so far because some of the most decorated musicians perform at the same, we are indeed lucky. Also, the Salt Lake Music Festival was equally amazing.”

The duo performed an acoustic set with Sudhir Ghorai, who accompanied them on tabla and has been playing with them for over three years now. “I am a disciple of Pt Anindo Chatterjee and during the half set, in which we play Hindustani classical, they (Andrew and Jonathan) follow my sound and during the Indo-western set, I follow their sound,” explains Sudhir. The Monsoon Duo performed Basant ragas that were expressed on soprano and tenor saxophones and if words could do justice to their talent, we would not need music.

DJ Shadow from Dubai talks about his music and passion…
Mona

Photo: Manoj Mahajan DJ Shadow from Dubai aka Satheerth Kunneth started the game all for the wrong reasons but has stayed in it as he is discovering his passion for music along the way. Born and brought up on a rich dose of Bollywood, this DJ with Keralite roots was fascinated by what the life of a DJ offered — instant fame, attention from girls — and it all looked so easy. He was 17 then!

A decade on, it’s his passion that has kept him in this profession. “It’s not that easy making and mixing music week long and doing gigs on weekends. Sometimes I do not even get time to meet my friends,” says the guy who has played for some 100 events in the last four months.

In Chandigarh on Saturday to play at Blue Blazer-26, DJ Shadow opened on life he lives…

Starting with the name, ‘Shadow’ was the first option that came to his mind and it had nothing to do with an international star with the same name, “A hardcore Bolly baby I have been, quite oblivious to international music scene to begin with. In fact, I faced lots of trouble with the name so came ‘Dubai’ along with it.” Huge hit he is in Dubai where desi nights are only growing bigger with time. “I play in some of the best clubs out there and have my own sizeable fan base,” says DJ Shadow who in order to connect with his younger fan base took to RJing (clubs only admit 21 plus out there).

Currently he is busy grasping response to four of his current songs Saajna (I Me aur Main, Teri Jhuki Nazar, Hum Jee Lenge (Murder 3) and Mere Dad Ka Mashup (Mere Dad Ki Maruti). “I love playing live as the audience response is instant. You might make music and think it is great but it’s the audience whose verdict matters.”

An ardent Shah Rukh Khan fan, DJ Shadow was on a high playing at Ra.One preview after a party in Dubai. Another event that left him flabbergasted was Ayushmann Khurrana coming back stage to acknowledge that he was his remix fan, especially that of Panni Da, the evening he got Best Asian DJ Award at the Masala Awards 2012.

Having done music reviews and plenty of other stuff, this DJ is hoping to make some original music next. This definitely does not mean remixes get a back seat. On request, he has already done a Goan remix and might inch towards Keralite music which has not tempted him much so far and definitely explore more of Bollywood.

A huge fan of DJ Aqeel and Jay Sean (he has worked with both), this DJ is happy to spin music for India, “Energy level is high here,” he confesses urging you to check out his Shah Rukh Khan Mashup…

For society’s sake
Jharkhand-based ceramic sculptor C Vishwa is a thinking artist…
Manpriya Singh

Photo: Manoj Mahajan Ceramic sculptures and social issues can barely be put together in the same sentence. C Vishwa, ceramic sculptor from Jharkhand, likes a sense of purpose about things. It could be his thoughts or the creations that finally emerge out of them. “I always think of ways and means through which I can highlight social issues. For instance, global warming and so many other problems that our society is facing,” he shares, during his first solo exhibition in Chandigarh.

Accordingly, the twenty sculptures are a result of random thoughts and observations. He says, “Nobody’s situation and thinking process stays stagnant. It keeps changing from time to time depending on the circumstances.” The twenty works displayed flit across different subjects and inspirations.

There’s a series on laughing Buddha, in ceramic stoneware. “After graduating from Chhattisgarh, I started with sculptures in wood and stone and recently shifted to ceramics.”

Moving on, there’s a series titled Village Woman, with just the veil being the predominant part of the face. There’s a Rajasthani man, with his moustache doing the talking. The one titled Aas, highlights the eternal hope ever present in mankind. “These are faces looking at the sky hoping to put an end to global warming. They also symbolise how a human being is always optimistic.” He adds, “Nature and people remain my ultimate inspiration.”

While there may be no lively colours, there are just bare sculptures; well-carved and put together. The one titled Inner Mind, in glazed ceramic stoneware, gives the illusion of two heads conjoined in harmony, whereas the Efforts showcases the ever busy bee in clusters, working hard.

“It took me a month to make this beehive with so many bees on it.” He adds, “I first had to give some base to the structure. So I made the hive first with a lot of holes in it. Then I used the same material to make bees atop it. The bees are coloured to give the illusion as if they are buzzing.”

He has already worked on forms that seem to be talking and communicating in the divine language of spirituality. The human element for him is a physiological projection of our inner state. This makes us connect with others by revealing our feelings, hopes, love and fears to them. His works are a testament to his thoughts.

All that bling
All roads lead to Whispering Willows which is hosting the Vanity Fair showcasing a variety of designer wear and decor items
Manpriya Singh

If your love for bling runs deep, you won’t mind the distance, the parking woes, the crowd or even the blinding colours. Years down the line, Vanity Fair at Whispering Willows continues its bull-dog grip on the exhibitors and the visitors. There are crowds swarming every minute and those who love to browse before they shop, it negates the inconvenience of rubbing shoulders with one and all. Rana on a roll

Big call: Pravesh Rana Model and anchor Pravesh Rana isn't an unknown face for the audience. Pravesh, who is seen as the host of Emotional Ataychar on television, recently made his much-awaited Bollywood debut in Tigmanshu Dhulia's Saheb Biwi Gangster Returns. The film has been getting a good response and his role as a cop has been praised by many moviegoers. In an exclusive chat, we got this talented model-turned-actor to talk about his role, the film and future plans…

How did the film happen?

I have been chasing Tigmanshu Dhulia for a few years now. I've been a great fan of all his work. I've watched all his films. I've always tried to be in touch with him. Eventually he called for an audition for a role in Saheb Biwi Gangster Returns and I went for it. That's how the role happened.

What made you accept this film?

You should watch the film. It's very impressive and keeps changing every five minutes. There are so many twists and turns in the film that the story keeps you spell bound. And of course, it had a brilliant cast and a great director. I also looked at the importance of the role and if it had any scope for me to show my acting skills. I had to say yes.

After your appearance on Bigg Boss 3, you've been quite regularly seen on screen hosting shows and award ceremonies. What took you so long?

I don't know. I am still 28 years old. I know it's been some time that I've been seen on television. But I think whether you take time or not, it's the role that matters. Your choice matters. I don't give much importance to quantity but I believe in doing quality work.

How has been the response to your role?

Great! People have been very kind. They have appreciated my performance. My role wasn't advertised so it came as a shock to many people when they finally saw me on big screen. I've been getting a lot of fan mails and compliments from people in the industry as well. So it feels good.

What's the best compliment you have got?

The best compliment I got is from an industry director. He walked up to me and said, "You reminded me of 80s Vinod Khanna." I've been a big fan of Vinod Khanna's work so it meant a lot to me.

Now that you're have made your Bollywood debut, are you planning to quit television?

No, it is nothing like that. I think if you have different skills, you should use them all. I still do modelling and host shows. I'm going to continue using all my skills. But obviously my area of focus will be on films now. Because that's the part I haven't explored much.

Any directors you would like to work with?

I'd definitely like to work with Tigmanshu Dhulia Sir again. There's a long list actually. Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bharadwaj, Dibakar Banerjee and Imtiaz Ali are a few to name.

Who's your inspiration?

I actually get inspired by many people. I take their good qualities and try to learn from them. For this role, my dad was my inspiration.

What's next?

I am going to do more films.

Have you been getting lots of offers?

Yes, I've received a few. I am reading the scripts. Let's see.

Who's your favourite actor?

There are many actually. I like Irrfan Khan, Ajay Devgn, Nana Patekar and Aamir Khan. In actresses, I quite like Vidya Balan and Mahie Gill. She's a part of the film and I think she's brilliant.

One Bollywood actress you would like to go on a date with?

I think I'd like go on a date with Deepika Padukone because she is self-made and she has proved herself as an actress. She's also pretty.

How does it feel to share screen space with actors like Irrfan Khan and Jimmy Sheirgill ?

It feels great. I couldn't have asked for a better debut. When you watch them doing their part, you realise how experienced they are.

Anurag unplugged…
Anurag Kashyap says he will never remake films from down South. He talks about his meeting with Steven Spielberg and more.

Backing Tamil films

Creative call: Anurag KashyapIf you have seen Gangs of Waaseypur, I have dedicated the film to director Bala. He is a rooted and elusive person and I like the way he portrays his characters. His audiences love him so he does not even need to promote his movies. I thought his film Paradesi would do well in the North so I have decided to lend my support to it.

Remaking South films

I have never remade any movie and I do not believe in it. I feel they bring in the money but there is hardly any creativity and originality in them. But there are some very interesting and inspiring films made by people like Bala and Vetrimaaran.

Working with Amitabh Bachchan

I have worked with him on my film for Bombay Talkies which will release in May. I have recently wrapped up Ugly and will begin work on Bombay Velvet. After that, I will take up another project with Amitabh Bachchan again. I am yet to finalise the script and the rest of the cast.

Playing godfather

I am a complete film bug. I express myself through social media and I am very accessible. I stay away from second opinions because then I will not make any film. Opinions take up too much time! I feel Marathi and Tamil cinema has very talented people who need to be encouraged. I have just completed my first Bengali film called Tasher Desh and Marathi film called Vakratunda Mahaakaya.

Meeting Steven Spielberg

He is extremely humble and down-to-earth despite being such an accomplished and famous filmmaker. I wanted to ask him many questions but felt the platform was not right. A lot of my contemporaries referred to me during the interaction and I wanted to disappear. Sometimes, I wish could be Mr India and be invisible and make films.

Body basics

Dare bare: Emraan Hashmi Serial kisser of Bollywood Emraan Hashmi is ready to go bare for his next movie Ghanchakkar. The actor will take off his shirt and would show his well toned body and abs. In several scenes, he will display his body moves. There is a scene in the film where he will be seen doing stunts inside a moving train.

A source close to the film said, "Emraan will go bare body for one of the scenes in the film. He has been maintaining himself really well to take his shirt off for the scene. In Ghanchakkar, he will show his agile self in several scenes." In the film, Emraan is paired opposite Vidya Balan. This is Vidya's first film post marriage. She will be seen in the role of a Punjabi woman and will shed her saree look and wear salwar-kameez. Ghanchakkar is a comedy directed by Rajkumar Gupta.

A rough start
Priyanka Chopra’s item song, Babli Badmaash, gets mired in controversy

Shootout At Wadala has been in the thick of controversy from its very inception. The controversy trailed the first track, which is all set to open the film's music campaign. The Priyanka Chopra dance number Babli Badmaash was initially granted an 'A' certificate on the grounds that it was an 'item song'. The CBFC is believed to have received a complaint from some Delhi-based women's body regarding the commodification of women in item songs.

The CBFC's decision had the film's producers in a state of shock considering that this new rule had never been communicated to the film industry in the past.

Tanuj Garg, CEO - Balaji Motion Pictures confirms, "After submitting Babli Badmaash for certification, we were informed that it would get an 'A' because it was an item track. We informed the CBFC that the industry was not aware of such a rule and that this would warrant a larger discussion between both parties. We were later told by the CBFC that there was no blanket directive and that songs would be certified according to their content."

On Monday, the CBFC put Babli Badmaash through the Revising Committee, which cleared the track with a 'U/A' certificate.

Easy way out

Tick mark: Jennifer Aniston Jennifer Aniston is reportedly seeking adoption advice from fellow Hollywood actress Charlize Theron. As she gears up to tie the knot with Justin Theroux, the actress is also speeding up the process of becoming a mother, reported a publication online. The former Friends star has been consulting Theron, who is a close pal of Aniston's best friend Chelsea Handler.

Theron is mother to Jackson, an African-American baby boy whom she adopted last year. And while she hasn't decided if she does want to follow in the footsteps of Theron and Sandra Bullock, Aniston now knows if she wants to proceed down that route. "Jennifer has been quizzing Charlize about the adoption process thanks to Chelsea, who put the two in touch with another," a source said. "She's seriously considering that as an option, given her age and the fact that Charlize says it's the most rewarding thing she's ever done. But she hasn't decided entirely, with surrogacy another possibility for Jennifer because she definitely does want to have kids. However, at the moment, she's just concentrating on her wedding to Justin. After that, she will decide what to do next," the source added. — PTI

THE YEAR AHEAD
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is March 17...

The Venus becomes exalted on March 17. This is important because according to the Indian system of astrology, it is the Venus that compels you to be in relationships. Venus is associated with love, money, home, car and the procreative aspects of life. If Venus becomes weak, then your life force becomes impaired, and your ability to experience joy leaves you.

The three and half weeks, when the Venus moves through the zodiac of Pisces, will be extremely favourable for you to focus on your relationships, and for accumulating wealth and properties.

A year of recreation and fun. You will be in the mood to travel and spend money, but you will be sorry if you do that. Family members or spouse will cause some tensions.

Work at office will gain momentum as colleagues and seniors extend full cooperation. Creativity and enthusiasm will lead you to another beneficial year.

The work climate is more complicated than it appears. In order to perceive the hidden factors and account for the most intricate angles, you'll have to start by admitting what you don't know. The influence of number eight and the Saturn make you ambitious, energetic, confident and a simple person. You possess sharp memory and are always interested in improving your knowledge and skill. To avoid horrid surprises, be organised, punctual and respect rules and laws. Those born in the last decade, should cast aside stubbornness and listen to the opinions of others before rejecting them. Otherwise, they will regret their actions. This year a promotion or an increase in responsibility will give you reasons to celebrate.
