PCA authorities fail to deliver tickets at outlet
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 16
As many as 190 phones calls were received to enquire about the tickets at the Central Bank of India, the only outlet in the City Beautiful to get tickets for the ongoing third test match between India and Australia, but there was not even a single ticket to sell. Though it has been decided by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) authorities to sell the tickets on a daily basis, they did not deliver the lot of vouchers at the above mentioned venue till 1 pm.

The situation prevented the local cricketing enthusiasts from witnessing what infact turned out to be a day of records.

“I have received around 190 calls on my official phone, to confirm the status of tickets, till now but the branch, has not received even a single ticket to sell. The delay is from the PCA authorities as they asked for some more time to delive the lot. As soon it is delivered, we will start selling the tickets”, said RK Bhalla, branch manager, Central Bank of India.

Generally, on Saturdays, the functioning of bank closes at 12 noon. When asked whether the branch would sell the tickets even after the stipulated hour, the manager added, “We have been assigned this duty and the branch will perform it. We will sell the tickets till the closing time. In addition, to this the bank will also sell the tickets on Sunday”.

Confusion among masses:

The decision to sell tickets through the bank branches has landed the local cricketing buffs in confusion. Usually the banks remain close on Sundays and function only during the first half on Saturdays. Although, it was decided to sell the tickets on Sunday, non-intimation of the same led to worry among people. “After getting to know about the new status of tickets, we rushed to the ticket-selling counter but failed to get a ticket. Hopefully, the tickets will be available by this evening or tomorrow", said a group of youngsters.

Stats Records:

The day witnessed series of records being made here. The 85th test match between two nations witnessed India’s highest first-wicket partnership (in India) against Australia as Shikhar Dhawan and Murli Vijay scored unbeaten 283 runs for the first wicket. This partnership broke the earlier record of Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan of 192 runs for the first wicket, at Mumbai in 1979. Out of India’s 471 test matches, it was for the 11th time when the opening pair crossed the 200-run mark.

Dhawan’s charm

  • Those who think that test cricket is a boring format of the game were proved wrong when Dhawan scored fastest century on debut, a hundred off just 85 balls. He went on to score unbeaten 185 runs off just 168 balls, studded with 33 boundaries and 2 sixes.
  • He becomes the first Indian batsman to score 185 runs (unbeaten) on a debut and now holds the 21st spot in the all time debutant-centurion club.
  • The 283-run partnership between Shikhar and Murli is the highest-opening-stand at the PCA Stadium, Mohali.
