Armed robbers target four houses in Kalka, decamp with cash, jewellery

Armed assailants targeted four houses in Kalka and looted cash and gold jewellery after taking the families hostage.

A case has been registered at the Kalka police station.

The police said around 12.30 am, the robbers targeted a house on Bitna Road. “The assailants beat up my father and mother. My father fainted and they gagged my mother and took her at knifepoint. They asked her to handover the cash and valuables to them,” said Shauhrat.

“Terrified, my mother Reshma gave Rs 40,000 and gold jewellery to the assailants,” said Shauhrat. “The assailants asked for water and took some medicines and fled,” she added.

Around 2.30 am, the assailants struck at a house in Ghatiwala village where they allegedly thrashed the couple, Punjab Singh and Sunita, and looted cash and jewellery worth Rs 10,000.

The assailants then targeted two more houses and thrashed Sonu, Sonam, Rakesh and Bubbly before decamping with cash and jewellery.

Rakesh and Sonu’s condition is stated to be serious. They have been referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, from the Sector 6 General Hospital.

Ambala youth stabbed

Ambala, March 11
A youth of Ambala City was stabbed near Sector-7 yesterday evening. The police has arrested one person in this regard.

According to the information, the victim named Gagan, worked at a wholesale cloth shop. He had received his salary and kept the same in his pocket. On his way home, late in the evening, when Gagan was crossing Panchayat Bhawan, a youth named Hemant stopped him and asked him to hand over the cash to him. When Gagan tried to resist, Hemant attacked him with a knife. Gagan sustained serious injuries on his neck and was rushed to the local civil hospital. Later on, the police registered a case against Hemant and arrested him. He was produced in the local court and was granted bail. The victim is still undergoing treatment— OC.

Ambala lawyers continue stir

The members of Ambala Bar Association kept the court work suspend for another day, on the call of Bar Council of India.

Earlier, the bar members were on strike, on the call of Punjab-Haryana Bar Council. The president of Ambala Bar Assocation Rajbir Saini said the lawyers did not appear in the court and had suspended the work. Meanwhile the continuous strike has caused a great inconvenience to the litigants, who are unaware of strike and have been coming to the courts on the due date of their hearings.

Patiala school awarded

Budha Dal Public School was given the Indian Leadership Award for Education Excellence, by All India Achievers Foundation. The school’s president Sukhvinderjit Kaur was accredited with the prestigious award, presented during a national seminar a at New Delhi recently.

The award was given by Dr Narain Singh Bishan, former Governor and Union Minister, Justice O P Verma, former Governor and Chief Justice. Prof S S Bhakhri, Director Institute of UNESCO and UN studies, Justice B A Khan, former Chief Justice of J&K, Dr Samual Kamba, High Commissioner Namibia and Major Ved Prakash.

Forest area of Punjab to be increased: Minister

Surjeet Kuamar Jiani, Punjab Forest and Wildlife Minister, said the forest area in Punjab would be increased from 7 per cent to 15 per cent in the coming days. For this purpose, trees would be planted on the common places such as schools, cremation grounds and common lands in villages and cities, he added.

The minister was here today to inaugurate the environment-cum-nature parks. He laid the foundation stone of two environment-cum-nature parks at Dera Bassi, which would be set up in the areas of 55 acre and 10 acre, at the cost of Rs 3 crore and 1 crore respectively. These parks would be of amusement parks with all the modern facilities, he added. The parks would be set up under the supervision of forest department, while the maintenance expenditure would be afforded by municipal council Dera Bassi. The Forest minister further added that these parks would be completed in the period of 6 months. When asked about the shortage of lions in Chhat Bir Zoo, minister assured that more lions would be added soon. Speaking on the problem of industrial pollution in this area, the Chief Parliamentary Secretary NK Sharma said that a high quality treatment plant would be set up here to control the pollution.

Environment topics to be discussed at SGGS varsity meet

A national conference on “Preservation of Environment Challenges before Humanity” will be organised from March 14 at SGGS World University, Fatehgarh Sahib. The conference will be held to celebrate the Gurtagaddi Diwas of Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib, who is remembered for his deep sensitivity to nature and its preservation.

“The conference will focus on contemporary issues related to the preservation of various components of environment in order to achieve sustainable development,” said Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia, Vice-Chancellor.

Ravinder Singh, chairman, Punjab Pollution Control Board, will inaugurate the conference, while Dr Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala, will be the chief guest.

Padam Shri Baba Sewa Singh, chairman, Khadoor Sahib (Nishan-E-Sikhi Charitable Trust), will preside over the conference.

Dr AS Reddy, Head, School of Energy & Environment, Thapar University, Patiala, will deliver the keynote address. Bibi Kiranjot Kaur, Member, SGPC, and former general secretary, will be the speaker on the occasion.

In the afternoon session, Jathedar Avtar Singh, president, SGPC, and the chancellor, will be the chief guest on the valedictory function.

Dr Gurmohan Singh, Vice-Chancellor, SGGS World University, will preside over the function, while Dr Ravinder Kherewal, associate professor, School of Health Science, PGI, Chandigarh, will deliver the valedictory address.

18 arrested for wrong parking

The police arrested 18 motorists from across the city for wrong parking today.

The offenders were booked for obstructing public way or line of navigation under Section 283 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). They were later released on bail.

Those arrested have been identified as Harwinder, a resident of Sector 56; Ramesh Kumar of Ludhiana; Harpreet Singh, a resident of Sector 23; Hari Om Jindal, a resident of Daria village; BL Koar, a resident of Sector 48; Nasim Khan of SAS Nagar; Kulbir Singh of Sector 27; Dinesh Kumar of Sector 26; Subhash Bajaj of Panchkula; Ajit Singh of Phase 2, Ramdarbar; Tirlochan Singh of Sector 29; Harmesh Kumar and Jabraj of Burail; Arjun of New Delhi; Anil Kumar, Raj Kumar and Sube Singh of Dadu Majra and Harwinder of Sector 56.

3 booked for acid attack

For the first time slapping the amended Section 326-A of the IPC, which deals with acid attacks, on anyone in the city, the police booked three persons for throwing a chemical on the face of a 30-year-old man here last night.

The victim, Dilbag Kumar, was allegedly attacked with blunt weapons and a chemical was thrown on his face near his jhuggi near Sector 61. Dilbag was admitted to the PGI, and his condition is said to be critical. The police registered a case against three persons, reportedly close friends of Kumar, at Sector 36 police station.

Police said one of the accused had been rounded up and was being interrogated. A sudden provocation could be a reason behind the attack, the police said.

Indian cricketers arrive in City Beautiful

The Indian cricket team arrived in the City Beautiful to face the Australian team in the third test match of ongoing test match series, here this evening.

The team will face the Aussies on March 14, at the PCA Stadium, Mohali. The team led by skipper Mahender Singh Dhoni reached the hotel in scattered manner. Hero of the last match, Cheteshwar Pujara, reached with his better-half in morning while MS Dhoni along with Virat Kohli, Ishant Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, reached the hotel in afternoon.

Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar along with other team members arrived in the evening.

According to reports, Harbhajan Singh will reach the city by tomorrow from his hometown Jalandhar.

PCA trials from April 20

The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) will conduct selection to enroll new talent for the PCA Non-Residential Academies, across the district. The players born between 12-14 years of age as on September 1, 2013 will be eligible to tale part in the trials.

The composition of players that are admitted to each center would be two opening batsmen, one wicket keeper, six middle order batsmen, three fast bowlers and three spinners.

The selection committee will be headed by two selectors nominated by the Punjab Cricket Association and one local selector from the respective district cricket association. The players (U-14) who had already enrolled with the academy will be retained.

MP Pandove, honorary secretary, the Punjab Cricket Association, said these academies will act as special coaching centres for fundamental training for the young players and are likely to start from April 10.

Programme: Chandigarh-Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36 on March 20 at 10 am, Mohali-C-Ground, PCA Stadium on March 21 at 10 am, Patiala-Dhruv Pandove Cricket Stadium on March 22 at 10 am, Ludhiana-Arya College on March 24 at 10 am, Amritsar-Gandhi Grounds on March 24 at 10 am, Jalandhar-Burlton Park on March 25 at 10 am.

Golf camp from March 17

The Academy of Golf, Chandigarh Golf Club, will organise a 10-day Junior Golf Camp for children age between 6 to 18 years (members and non-members) from March 17.

The camp will be conducted under Manjit Kochar, in two sessions (10.30 am to 11.30 am and 4.30 pm to 5.30 pm). During the training period, all the participants will be taught basic fundamentals and rules of the game. The interested participants can contact Kochar (981-555-4788). — TNS
