Big, beautiful, green plans for city

The draft master plan, 2031, has recommended making the city cyclist and pedestrian-friendly. In the draft plan, special focus has been laid on improving areas like transport, parking, education, health services, housing and green cover in the city.

Southern sectors set to get four dispensaries

After the imposition of house tax, the UT Administration has started fulfilling some of the demands of the municipal corporation (MC). Today, the Administration handed over land to the MC for setting up four dispensaries in southern sectors.

The CBI Court of Vimal Kumar Jain today issued a contempt notice to the CBI for failing to open sealed bank accounts of an accused despite court orders. The court acted on an application filed by Nishikant, the prime accused in the PEC scam.

Assault on policeman: No arrests, for now
Chandigarh, March 5
A day after registering an FIR against former Additional Advocate General of Punjab Rupinder Singh Khosla and other advocates for allegedly assaulting a UT police head constable, the police today made it clear that it would adopt a “slow approach” in acting against the accused and no immediate arrest would be made.

Dept suspends Postman
Chandigarh, March 5
Following a departmental inquiry, the Postal Department today suspended the postman of Kajheri village for not performing his duty diligently in delivering the Aadhaar cards among the residents of the village. Action followed the publishing of a news report, "Aadhaar cards dumped with vendors" in the Chandigarh Tribune.

A welcome halt at Mohali
Mohali, March 5
Enthusiasm was evident among the local residents who gathered at the local railway station where the Chandigarh-Amritsar Superfast Express halted for the first time this evening. Around 50 passengers, who were going to Jalandhar, Beas and Amritsar, boarded the train, which reached the station at Phase 11 exactly at 7.01 pm.

Finally, doctor appointed at Dhanas civil dispensary

In a respite to thousands of residents of Dhanas Milk Colony, the UT Heath Department has appointed a regular doctor at the the local civil dispensary, which had been functioning without a doctor for the past one year.

Mohali MC proposes budget of Rs 7,469 lakh
Mohali, March 5
The Mohali Municipal Corporation has proposed a budget of Rs 7,469 lakh for the financial year 2013-14. The proposed budget, which is about 45 per cent higher than that of last year, has been sent for approval to the Director, Department of Local Government, Punjab.

First police-public meeting ends abruptly in P’kula

The UT Home Secretary, Anil Kumar, has asked the UT IGP to have a "re-look" at the inquiry against three police officials, who were punished for negligence in the Khushpreet kidnapping case in December 2010.

As the Kajauli water line got damaged in the Morinda area in Punjab, water supply to the city in the evening hours was affected today. An MC official said some problem had occurred in the water supply line near Morinda.

9 minority schools decline to reserve 15% seats

CTU files written arguments
Chandigarh, March 5
During the hearing of the Anupama case today before the UT State Consumer Commission, the CTU filed its written arguments. The counsel for Anupama’s parents, Pankaj Chandgothia, pointed out that the contentions raised in the written arguments filed by the CTU were contrary to the statements made by SP Parmar, CTU General Manager, in his affidavit given during the cross-questioning by the counsel, earlier.

6 held for plot to dupe hotel owner
Panchkula, March 5
Six youngsters posing as Swiss bank agents have been arrested. They used to dupe people by saying that they have a software which converts black money into white. The arrested youngsters, who are in the age group of 21 to 27, have been identified as Yash, Shiva, Nitin, Rakesh, Satish and Mujesh. All of them hail from Himachal Pradesh.

Official jailed in bribery case
Chandigarh, March 5
The court today sentenced Jagmahinder Singh, Assistant IO (jail), posted with the Haryana civil Secretariat to two years imprisonment in a case of corruption. The UT Vigilance had registered a case against him and charged the accused for demanding a bribe of Rs 3,000 from an official posted in the fisheries department.

Thief goes on a shopping spree
Panchkula, March 5
In a first-of-its kind case, a thief who stole the wallet of a man at a cycle rally went on a shopping spree at Pantaloons and Woodland showrooms in Zirakpur and spent Rs 74,000 from the victim’s ATM card.

A woman constable posted with the PCR vehicle was teased by youths on a motorcycle on this evening. The police has registered a case against the driver of the motorcycle and the pillion rider. A case has been registered.

P’kula girl brings laurels
Panchkula, March 5
Ishika Goel, a local sqay martial arts performer, brought laurels by winning gold medal in the 3rd Asian Martial Arts Championship held at Dhaka (Bangladesh). By wining the top honour, she has booked her place in the upcoming world championship, to be held at Melbourne(Australia) in the month of May.
