Rallying is an addiction. And when the event is as grand as the Desert Storm, the excitement amid the participants from the region gets as high as it can get…
Storm in the desert
Jasmine Singh

The only sound that breaks the silence of the place is the grinding of the engines. Any passersby can raise an eyebrow over the decibels and might even qualify it as 'noise pollution'. To these guys, however, it is the most peaceful sound that they have ever heard; it is like a pace-maker for their heart!

It might be exaggeration, but for these participants from Chandigarh in the 11th Maruti Suzuki Desert Storm 2013, this is the sound they live with, wake up with and would want to continue hearing forever. Motorsports indeed is a fancy, hi-end game; all the same, it is sport that can slowly dig a pole in your bank account. It is a game that requires dedication to the hilt, a game that inspires and conspires at the same time to break your inclination for monotonous security! Most of the participants in the Desert Storm are from the 'been-there-done-that' category. We wonder what makes them come back year after year after year!

The adrenaline rush

Sunny Sidhu is the name every rallyist is familiar with. To him, this is the thing he knows how to do; he knows his machine like his own child. "I can't stay away from the thrill of the speed and the fact that I get to compete with the best in the country," says Sunny. Well, this sounds pretty technical. He laughs, "Monotony is death; settling with how things are in a regular fashion is boring. I like to test my limits time and again," adds the rallyist, who just came back from five days of extreme testing in Jodhpur, preparing for the Desert Storm. There is no stopping him…the several injuries, stitches all over his face, a hairline fracture on his back that happened an year ago…nothing at all. "There is incredible beauty in this lifestyle; once I fall in line with it, I feel myself. It is not just the speed or the adventure; it is a new discovery each time that brings to me this platform again and again."

A new horizon

Harpreet Bawa is a bundle of energy. It is difficult to make him sit at one place. All he does is talk about his machine, the preparations, recee, road book et al. With a family that prays for him every time he gears up for a motorsport event, Bawa feels he has just started his journey. "Each time I come back with a new discovery," he adds sounding like a philosopher. But the real Bawa is still to come out, "I like the thrill, the speed, the competition and knowing that I have to compete against time; it is something I can't explain."

The Desert Storm, in its 11th edition now, is a six-day event that runs in the highly challenging wild tracks of Rajasthan. The rally is marked by tough stages and spectacular terrain, ranging from desert stretches and vast salt flats that tests the endurance of both man and machine to the hilt.

Says Mayank Pareek, managing executive officer, Maruti Suzuki, "The 11th Maruti Suzuki Desert Storm rally will run from February 18 to 23; the cross-country motorsport event will traverse about 2,200 kilometres this year.” Take it from Harkaran Singh, "The mad passion for speed keeps me in rallying. Anybody can drive fast on an empty stretch of road. It is racing and competing, which makes for high adventure," adds the participant who is driving a Maruti Gypsy.

Rallying around

Desert Storm Rally will take off from Sardarshahar in Rajasthan. It will pass through the stretches of the Thar Desert in the outback regions of Jaisalmer and Bikaner, finishing at Jaipur. The tricity participating in the Desert Storm include Gurinder Singh Sidhu, Abhey Kaushal, Mohit Verma, Simranjeet Singh Gill, Capt AVS Gill, Pranab Gill, Pradeep Gupta and Samrat Yadav.

Notes to each other
Are love letters a thing of the past or do they still kindle the same excitement?
Jasmine Singh

Right below where he keeps all his new collection of music, Neeraj Sarkar, a bank employee from Mohali, finds a folded paper; he pulls it out in an instant. He can't believe his eyes — it is the first love letter he got from a college friend, expressing her one-sided, undying love for him!

Love letter…it's been ages he wrote or even received a written expression of love. He would have torn it to pieces had this Jagjit Singh fan not heard the beautiful ghazal Tere khusbhu se bharey khat main jalata kaisey.

Love letters, the only way of expression at one point, now only occupies a corner in the memory. When was the last time you wrote a love letter? Penned your feeling unabashedly in verses; rhyming every word in the sentence? When was the last you did that?

Ages ago

I haven't written a love letter in ages; the only one I remember is when I was in school. I poured my heart out on a letter to a pen friend. It was crazy that time; I was all smiles and gushing while writing the letter. I don't know of many people who still write love letters, though it is the best way you can give shape to your feelings.

Dr Garry Sandhu, orthodontist

Heart to heart

I miss writing letters; not that I have done a doctorate in writing love letters, but I had written one that came direct dil se. It took me almost four days to complete that four-page missive. I had written the best poetry, all self-created. When I fall in love, I would definitely like to express it through a letter.

Kartar Cheema, Punjabi actor

Words worth

It is surprising that ever since I have been in love, I have written love letters. I still go and buy scented paper for writing love letters! I feel emotions can be best expressed only through the written word. Love is a beautiful feeling and to share it with someone you really love, you need to give it time. Whenever I am flying out, I leave behind a love letter.

Captain Dalip Singh Grewal

Couple chemistry

My affair with love letters started after marriage. The first time I wanted to thank my wife for cooking so well, I wrote to her. This triggered the love letter writing spree. Although it has been a while that I have written a love letter, I often catch my wife reading the old letters and smiling at me.

Anish Jindal, financial consultant

Bonding together

Who says pouring out feelings on a scented paper is passé? We started writing love letters to each other after marriage. Even in the time of technology when everything can be said through sms or a phone call, we still prefer to write and express our love through letters. This also strengthens our bond.

Doc Talk
For the love of beauty
Dr Sukhdeep Kaur

Love is all around, and it’s time to look your best. And this is how you can do that.

Fraxel laser

This magic laser works by improving the skin tone and texture, tightening the skin, improving wrinkles, as well as removing unsightly brown pigmentation spots. It is useful for treating the face, neck, décolletage and back of the hands. Fraxel works by treating part of the skin’s surface (approximately 20-25 per cent per treatment) in a session, allowing a dramatic cosmetic improvement without the downtime, discomfort. The skin’s appearance is improved with each and every treatment session. Three to five treatments spaced four weeks apart are usually required. The improvement continues to increase for weeks to months after treatment as continued collagen production and remodelling occur.

Intense pulsed light photorejuvenation

It improves and repairs:

  • Pigmented spots, freckles and sun damaged skin.
  • Unsightly small veins and capillaries.
  • Fine lines, open pores and skin texture.
  • Rosacea and other diffuse redness.

IPL uses pulses of visible light to treat and correct the results of sun damage and ageing.  The treatment decreases age spots and it also encourages new collagen growth to improve skin texture, increase skin smoothness and reduce pore size and fine lines. You may notice significant improvement after just one session but the best results are achieved with three treatments, performed at 3-4 week intervals.

Microhydrabrasion

It improves or eliminates many skin conditions and imperfections:

  • Active acne
  • Reduction of scars – acne, surgical or any raised scar
  • Superficial hyperpigmentation
  • Congested skin
  • Extractions of blackheads and whiteheads

It effectively exfoliates the superficial layers of the skin, helps increase sluggish skin cell turnover and encourages increased oxygen and nutrients to the skin by increasing circulation. The exfoliation technique uses various grades of finely gritted natural diamond tips plus vacuum pressure on the surface of the skin. In the process, it empties blocked pores, removes the dead and damaged skin cells and stimulates the collagen beneath the surface to give you a better skin tone. Your skin will improve noticeably after four to six sittings, with the treatments usually spaced two to four weeks apart.

Timeless peel

  • It rejuvenates the skin by removing fine lines, wrinkles pigmentation spots and other signs of sun damage. This effective deep peel contains 30 per cent chirally-corrected L-Retinol A.
  • It encourages the growth of healthy skin cells, increases cell turnover and removes dead cells. Timeless peel also increases the skin’s moisture level to give you a younger, smoother complexion.

Laser hair reduction

Laser hair removal is the most effective, fastest, painless method of permanently reducing unwanted facial and body hair. Laser hair removal uses a highly concentrated light source that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicles.  One requires six to eight sessions spaced at four weekly intervals.

So, pamper yourself with these scientific skin procedures right away!

Life’s lessons
Divya Dutta

I was irritated for having missed a deal because of date issues. That was something I really wanted to do. As my car stopped at the signal, I saw a man standing there in tattered clothes. Looked like he hadn't had a bath for ages, he had a bottle of chilled mineral water in hand. Someone, it seems, must have given it to him at the signal.

He looked at it in sheer amazement…as if it was the Kohinoor. He touched it, felt it and drank it in one gulp, cherishing it every bit! It looked like he had won the world...the bright glint in his eyes, unforgettable!

My anger had subsided a bit...it was pre-occupied with the man’s smiling face. As I turned around, on my left side, I saw the slum dwellers. But there were no hutments. They had just laid their beds and sheets. And I saw someone cleaning her limited space of 5 ft by 5ft and decorating it as if it was a spacious bungalow. For her it was! A little further, I saw a lady making rotis on her chulha. No utensils, she was getting the flour straight from a plastic bag and feeding her kids. The food was just enough for that family...what we call living hand to mouth! But it was her world where she looked settled, may be mentally prepared that she might be shooed off that place the next day! But today that moment was hers. And she was living it with a smile.

Ghar pahunch gayi thi main! But I couldn’t get those visuals out of my head. My secretary called and I told her, “I am actually fine now and not bothered about losing the deal, something better will come.” But she said, “Madam we are doing it, all sorted.” Just when I half accepted life with a smile, it happened!

That’s the thing with life, it happens to you when you least expect it...so enjoy the moment with a smile till life decides to favour you. I am grateful to the people I saw on the road who cherished their moments and a thanks to someone up there for all the magnificent things to be thankful about.

No Flop show
The market for flip-flops is growing due to the comfort factor...
Gurvinder Singh

Flip-flops are certainly adding some style to the world of fashion. The ‘desi’ rubber V-shape chappals have had a make-over and are out to make a statement. These have also become part of many footwear brands’ collections for both men and women.

“These go well with jeans, jegging, leggings, skirts and shorts; especially with the casual wear,” says Avantika, a student. “With some sparkle and bling, these can pair well with suits for formal occasions,” she adds.

Men are not far behind. “V-shape chappals have become surprisingly popular among men for the last couple of years,” says Daljit Singh from Sona Footwear. “Earlier leather sandals were the choice of men, but these have now become restricted to only the elderly. Young men usually prefer casual sandals and now V-shapes,” he adds.

The new, stylish flip-flops are the choice of many men while travelling while some even prefer to wear them for office on ‘casual-wear’ days!

“It is interesting that now brands have created V-shapes from leather, suede etc. These look stylish and formal,” says Daljit.

Harjit, designer with a publishing house, says earlier he found it strange seeing men wearing V-shaped footwear, but now he is himself hooked on to these just for the comfort they afford. “It is a relieving experience to wear them. The style quotient is also high now. I can even wear them to work at times,” he says.

“I feel flip-flops will go never ‘flop’ for the comfort they offer is amazing,” adds Vaneet, another designer.

Kareena’s style dilemma

Style sister: Kareena Kapoor

Kareena Kapoor has a strange dilemma. The fashionable actress is spoilt for choice when it comes to style icons and cannot choose between her sister Karisma Kapoor and mother-in-law Sharmila Tagore.

She recently wrote and launched a style diary based on her. She is one of the most fashionable and trend-setting actresses of Bollywood and her style statements have evolved beautifully over time. She is a style icon and her own style icons are Karisma Kapoor, her mother Babita and her mother-in-law Sharmila Tagore.

Karisma found her groove sometime after joining movies. Sharmila Tagore is known for donning a swimsuit in her movie Evening in Paris in 1967 and a bikini for a magazine cover. She was also one of the slimmest actresses in her time and was known for her bouffants and winged eye-liner. Bebo says, “All my style and fashion inspiration is at home. Lolo is my idol and she advises me a lot. I love the way my mother-in-law dresses and my mom has always been stylish. “

About her own style, she says, “I love wearing jeans and tees and dresses. Sarees are my preferred formal wear. I take about ten minutes to get ready.” About her hubby Saif, she says, “Saif knows what looks good on him. I love him in a suit and in jeans and tees with a bandana. We do have a say in the other’s wardrobe. We even go shopping together.”

Kavita Kaushik
Time please: Kavita Kaushik

Kavita Kaushik, who gained popularity with the comedy show FIR, telecast on Sab TV, has quit the show because she does not want to do two shows on the same channel simultaneously. She signed the show, Tota Weds Maina (TMW), which replaced FIR’s time slot last month. The six-year-old FIR was shifted to weekends by the channel.

Why did you quit?

Shooting for two shows was really taxing, so this was the best option. The channel and the makers of the show sided with my decision and it was all mutual.

It must be tough to quit a show that was your baby and given you so much fame in life?

I was working in FIR for almost seven years and I was itching to play another character. TMW came to me as a life saver. I played Chautala for so long that somewhere I was feeling stagnated. Though I loved the character, but for an actor it’s really important to grow. Maina is totally an opposite of Chautala’s character and a breath of fresh air.

TWM was just launched and it will take time to get audience response. Does that worry you?

Yesterday, when I was out in a public place, people called me Maina and asked for my Tota. I love the show and I am confident about it. Not every show can be a hit and run for seven years or be as big as FIR, but I am positive about TWM.

You also have distinct voices in both shows.

Yes, in TWM I have a UP accent in a thin voice while in FIR it’s a Haryavani accent with a heavy voice. Though it’s fun but switching back and forth has taken a toll on my health and voice.

Are you interested in doing films?

I want to do films but there’s no time. I thought I would take a break from FIR and go to New York to stay there for a month, but nothing happened. I got two days off and then I had to shoot for TWM.
