No problem at all
Actor Om Puri is back in Pollywood. And this time he is here with a comic riot Bha Ji In Problem...
Mona

Entertaining yet meaningful cinema is where Om Puri truly belongs to; a fabulous actor who has been part of successful projects such as Aakrosh, Ardh Satya, East is East, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro Tamas, among a lot many others, takes his role of making cinema, which makes the society better, very seriously.

In Chandigarh on Monday, Om Puri addressed all around warmly as the team of Bha Ji In Problem commenced shooting. As the others took it easy, chilling in the afternoon sun at the Golf Club, it was Puri who kept preparing for the shot while also addressing those gathered, who just couldn’t have enough of him.

Having been part of Punjabi films earlier, Puri is happy to be part of the industry. He plays a theatre director in his latest outing and is looking forward to ‘adding punch to the character’. Recently, he also headed back to theatre after 25 years, for various reasons. It is a pity that there are not many roles written for veterans like him, especially as our cinema largely revolves around the young.

So, does cinema cater to what the society demands? “Even if it does, is it not our duty to make our society better,” his voice rises as he emphatically answers back. It is very much possible to make meaningful as well as successful cinema, he says time and again while citing the example of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro.

One certain way to reach there is to turn to literature. “We have such a rich treasure of Hindi as well as Punjabi literature, why not use that?” he asks. Om Puri is dead against titillation in cinema. “Look at the cinema of yore, you would find romance in V Shantaram and K Asif; they would also use songs and dances, but it was all grace.” Movies like Chak De India and Taare Zameen Par have impressed him and he is all for films that are not preachy, yet at the same time the ones that help in analysing the problems for people.

Bring in Hollywood and he says, “Why go so far? They are way ahead of us in terms of discipline, themes and treatment. I don’t say they don’t have bad films; but they have made many brave films, which we are yet to see in India.”

Joint effort

As 100 Punjabi movies have been announced so far, Gurpreet Ghuggi who dons the producer’s hat with Bha Ji In Problem wonders aloud, “With 100 announcements, I assume 80 films will be made as well; some 60 will complete and yet we only have 52 Fridays a year. When are we going to release them?”

What assures him though is the team that delivered the hit Carry On Jatta; with Sameep Kang helming affairs as the director, Om Puri, Gippy Grewal, Gurpreet Ghuggi and Khushboo Grewal are the actors ready to dole out another comedy. The plot takes a leaf from real life; it is the story of two friends who knowing each other’s secret use them to get ahead.

Singer-turned-actor Gippy does all the male vocals and is happy that slowly but steadily Punjabi films are moving beyond the Delhi territory. “When actors like Om Puri get associated with us, we get connected with their fan base too; his being in the film is a benchmark of quality work,” he says.

Khushboo Grewal is happy being labelled as Ghuggi’s better half and this is what she plays yet again. “A good plot is the USP of Sameep’s films. I heard the film’s story twice and I was rolling on the floor laughing.”

String by string
Santoor exponent Shruti Adhikari has given her heart and soul to carry forward a family legacy. And the journey has been rewarding ...
Amarjot Kaur

Ujjaini Sharma
SPRING IN STEP: Ujjaini Sharma

A peep into the profound calibre of Shruti Adhikari, which is wrapped in utter simplicity of her disposition, prepares one for a journey into the world of classical music with this first female Santoor player in the country.

“Shruti has just arrived and is waiting in my office,” says Shobha Koser, registrar at the Pracheen Kala Kendra, and as we measure the way to the office to behold the sight of Shruti, who is clad in a simple Indian suit, we are acquainted with her innocence at once. We are greeted with a rather mellow “Namaste!” and the conversation follows effortlessly thereafter.

“Music came naturally to me,” she says, while settling her spectacles, “My mother Sangeeta Kathale was the first female Pakhawaj player and a vocalist. She also played the violin.” Her voice softens with every sentence she utters, “My father, Diwakar Kathale, an engineer by profession, was also a sitarist. So, I took to music very fondly. While my mother introduced me to classical vocal music and violin, my father tutored me on sitar.”

When her choice for picking up santoor as an instrument stands questioned, Shruti explains, “The MP government had announced a scholarship for a course in rare instruments and I applied for it at once. Needless to say, Santoor intrigued me and I really wanted to do something different. It was then that I started my training under the aegis of Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma.”

Shruti would shuttle between her hometown, Bhopal, and Mumbai during her teens to take lessons from Pt Shiv Kumar, “My mother accompanied me every time I went to Mumbai; she would take leave from work just to support my interests.” Shruti’s father left for his heavenly abode when she was nine and her mother, who worked as the head of the department in the music department of Bhopal MLB College, wanted her daughter to take the legacy of the family forward. Her grandfather, Pt Bala Bhau Umdekar, was the last Darbar singer at Gwalior.

Coming from a lineage that has such a distinct history in music, Santoor was not a very comfortable option as a musical instrument for Shruti. “I remember when I first met Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma he said he did not teach women because they got married and then abandoned their talent. It’s not east to play Santoor, Shat Tantri Veena, which has 100 strings. It’s hard to tune each string. Also, the technique is very difficult; if you are too harsh while stroking, you might sound too loud and if you stroke the strings too softly, the sound might not be heard at all.”

Shruti has performed at several places across the country and gives due credit to her husband for supporting her. As time flies by, Shruti sips on a cup of tea and the apparent fatigue caused due to the long journey fades into the excitement of her event.

Classical touch

She is a classical dancer, an actor and a model. At the Pracheen Kala Kendra, she will perform her first-ever show out of her hometown, Kolkata. The 24-year-old Kolkata-based Bharatnatyam dancer, Ujjaini Sharma, says, “I started learning kathak and later Bharatnatyam.”

Pour your heart out
This Valentine’s Day, share all the gifts of love
Gurvinder Singh

The bloom opens and the heart-shaped ‘I Love You’ message appears from the centre at the click of a button. Hold the ‘love barometer’ and the blood from the heart boils… there are a host of gifting options available in the market this Valentine’s Day.

Teddies are ever popular

These are available atop hanging swings, where a couple of teddies are on the swings or clinging to the big heart from both sides. A teddy would do a ‘shrug-dance’ (moving shoulders up and down) as it plays music at the press of a button. An LED fan would also play from the heart, which shows love messages.

Rosy love

After teddies and hearts, it is time for stuffed roses this time around. “I found the roses very attractive and would gift one to my fiancé this Valentine’s Day,” says Amit. If stuffed one is not your kind, there is the option of crystal and chocolate roses as well.

Choco love

Chocolates are available in all shapes, packaged all the more attractively this year. “You can get the name of your beloved on the chocolate, which would add more personal touch to your gift,” says Jatin from Jatin’s Gallery.

Pop ‘n’ say

If you thought greetings are out of fashion. The pop-up cards with love messages could take you by surprise. “Love cards are ever popular and are doing well. Many interesting pop-up cards are available in the markets this time around,” says Amneet Singh Kapoor from Kapoor’z. “Table lamps in heart shape are very popular,” he adds.

The heart has the lights, dual-tone colours and impressive music to go with them. “I am presenting a greeting card and a heart to my friend. I have also taken a mug,” says Sneha.

“There are so many little ‘innovations’ to the typical Valentine gifts this time, which add all the more excitement to the day,” says Deepti, an MA student.

Here’s a quick guide on how to buy gifts according to your loved one’s star signs…

This year, there is an astrological significance for Valentine’s Day which falls on February 14. Abundant goddess energy will be available this day .Relationships are created by the goddess and they are fundamental to human happiness, success and serenity. Vasant Panchmi is also coinciding when the 5th Moon day commences at 8.20 am and the Sun in Aquarius makes the event exceptionally important for Saraswati, the goddess of education. The star on this day will be Revati which is governed by Mercury, the planet of knowledge. Venus, the planet that rules art, music and culture is placed in the auspicious position along with Jupiter, the planet known for knowledge and education.

Let stars guide the Valentine’s Day gift

Know the Sun sign of your friend, love mate, fiancée, friend, wife and then decide for the Valentine gift as per signs.

Aries: Aries would like to be pampered to the fullest. A candle light dinner in a quiet restaurant will be the ideal gift. Get a bunch of twenty four red roses; bend down on your knees and propose to your Arian- after all this is what they have been expecting from you!

Taurus: Be sweet to your Taurean lover as this is the sensual sign. Anything you buy for your loved one should have a fine feel to it. Clothing that is soft will please a Taurean. A pineapple cake with “I love you” written on it will certainly be a pleasing gift. A silver watch and soft white teddies will click.

Gemini: While others might like to be left alone on Valentine’s Day, Geminis like the expensive gifts. You may present a mobile, laptop or any electronic gadget.

Cancer: Those born under the sign are shy and retiring. You can please a Cancerian by treating him/her royally this day. It would be heaven for this sun sign if you give them an elegant gift.

Leo: This sign probably likes to be over dressed for any occasion. A spa getaway would be a great hit with a Leo. A gold ring, bracelet, yellow roses will please them.

Virgo: Anything that can help create an ambience of serenity will always be a good gift for a Virgo. Love pillowcase sets can prove to be a perfect gift.

Libra:  You could wave a magic wand and remove their problems; this is the ideal gift for a Valentine’s Day. The second best gift would be perfumes, solitaire and white roses.

Scorpio: Dark glasses are a great gift for them. Scorpios find spy gadgets quite fascinating. A book about lost treasures, unsolved mysteries, or unsolved crimes would make an intriguing gift. Dry fruits plus eight red roses can also be an option.

Sagittarius: Travel books and DVD’s that tour the world are also good replacements for the real thing. They are generous and also appreciate generosity in others; therefore a donation to a institution in their name would be welcome.

Capricorn: This Valentine’s Day your Capricorn lover is expecting real loyalty and friendship. Whatever you do, make the evening simple and talk about them.

Aquarius: They want to feel like stars and there is no harm in making them feel the same on this day. Make sure that whatever you say comes directly from your heart, as there is a strong possibility for you to emerge as a winner.

Pisces: A fancy getaway to a spa, a pampering massage or a refreshing trip to a beach or hill side resort will be a thrilling gift for this sign. You can also gift posters, motivational CD’s and books.

Par Excellence
Short game: Maintain the level of your body while turning
Jesse Grewal

Topped or duffed shots are fairly frequent when the lies get tight or bare. Most golf courses have bare or tight lies through the winter months especially around the green as these areas have the maximum usage. Hitting a pitch shot from a tight lie is very difficult and a player has to either chip or use a putter from off the green.

However, when faced with a shot from a tight lie we tend to drop the body down to get the club head under the ball. This leads to a series of problems. If the body goes down or the level of the head drops the club would dig into the ground and we would duff the shot. As a reaction to this the player begins to lift his arms upwards near impact or pull his arms closer to the body which results in a top. It is a fact that there are more topped shots hit when the body goes down as compared to when the body goes up. Most players blame the head going up for a topped shot. It is more likely to be the opposite. The body going down could also be a reaction to the arms going up in an effort to scoop the ball up from a bare lie.

There are two elements in all golf shots – the arms lifting the club up and dropping the club down with gravity while the body turns around and away from the target during the backswing and towards the target during the forward swing.  Mistakes occur when the arms do the body’s work of going around and around and the body takes over the arms job of going up and down.

While hitting chips or pitch shots from bare lies do not attempt to lock your body or stop its turning action as one does while putting. Allow the shoulders and hips to rotate on the backswing and let the legs and hips initiate the forward swing. Keep the arms loose so that they will drop with gravity and allow the club head to do its work. The club head should stay low on the follow through. Let your body turn to the target and allow your head to swivel and watch the ball as it flies to your target. Do not keep your head rigid and down after the shot.

Master Chef
Pleased as punch!
Kandla Nijhowne

Hot cocktails are the perfect prescription for chilly autumn and winter nights. They are synonymous with log fires, a paperback, soft music, revelry and romance. Jump-start a party with a warm bowlful of punch. It will surely leave everybody pleased as punch. Some of the winter drinks are laced with liquors and cream but you can simply spice up a drink with seasonal flavors, like cinnamon, mint, fruit juice, even tea. If they have a splash of alcohol, then just one sip will make you feel merrier. I bring you one drink with alcohol, and one without. Feel free to spike the latter with rum if you please.

Hot Toddy
1 peg brandy, whiskey or rum
1 tbsp honey
1 lemon
2-3 cloves
1 cup hot water
1 tea bag

Method
Coat the bottom of a mug with honey. One made of glass looks pretty.
Pour in the liquor and the juice of half a lemon, keeping the other half for garnishing.
Heat water with the cloves and add the tea bag to make hot tea.
Pour the steaming tea into the glass and stir.
Slice a disc of lemon, stab with a clove or two, and garnish the drink with it.

Hot Spiced Punch
250ml grape juice
250ml cranberry juice
250ml orange juice
6 whole cloves, or ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
1 cinnamon stick
1 thick slice of ginger
4- 5 tablespoons caster sugar.
A long sliver of orange peel, scrubbed clean.

Method
Boil two cups of water along with the cinnamon stick, ginger and orange peel.
Allow the liquid to reduce to half, then fish out and discard the cinnamon and peel.
Put the pan back on the heat and stir in the sugar, beginning with three tablespoons only.
Always keep the heat low, gently simmering, but never boiling.
Add all the fruit juices and stir to combine. Leave everything to simmer for about five minutes.
Taste and add more sugar if needed.
Strain through a sieve and serve hot

Abhinav Jain with his Labrador Roger
playmate: Abhinav Jain with his Labrador Roger

“Roger is my Independence Day gift (being born on August 15),” exclaims the young lover of canines, Abhinav Jain, as his friend and mate the Labrador in his shining black coat comes running to meet his master but stops in his tracks after hearing the command “Stop!” He turns his head to an angle in a quizzing manner.

“He is very observant besides being highly obedient and affectionate,” says Abhinav. They have two other pets in the house–a German Shepherd and a Pug but for him Roger is his special chum.

Love me love my Roger

Abhinav cannot stop telling us about his companion’s attributes—“Roger is friendly yet very autocratic and likes to take his time to be familiar with any stranger. I feel that being disciplined is also a very strong quality which I really feel proud of.”

Very neat and tidy in his ways, Roger has been no problem after he was suitably trained as a puppy. Enjoying his daily one- and-a-half-kilometer run, Roger loves outdoor. He also knows who his master is for he will obey his command first and then look at others.

Not a fussy eater and a vegetarian, Roger will eat anything offered to him and of course, he is very fond of sweets. Though quite compatible with the other two in the house, Roger does like to maintain his distance and has his own private corner.

Your's faithfully

“How he welcomes me when I come home is a priceless experience and such a booster for my ego,” Roger’s master quips. He responds to orders like “Get the Newspaper, roll, salute, hand shake’ etc. He can even judge Abhinav’s mood and reacts accordingly, either snuggles next to him or drags him out to play. “But once a no, means a no! He has got the discipline of an Army dog,” exults the proud owner.

The dress code at Grammy

There were no "wardrobe malfunctions" but stars at the 55th Grammy Awards were not covering up either, despite being asked to dress "appropriately." Presenter Jennifer Lopez, wearing a black off-the-shoulder Anthony Vaccarello gown slit up to her thigh on one side, joked about her attire. "As you can see, I read the memo," said the diva who caused a stir a few years ago when she appeared at the Grammys in a Versace gown with a neckline that dropped below her navel. "You inspired the memo!" said her co-presenter Pitbull, getting a big laugh from the audience.

Broadcaster CBS last week issued a memo asking that Grammy performers and presenters keep their breasts, buttocks and genitals covered up. "I thought about the dress code. And thought about it again. And that's about it. I respect it. See, I wore clothes," she said.

Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland told reporters backstage of her black Georges Chakra gown that featured several strategically placed cutouts. Singer Kimbra, who recorded Somebody That I Used to Know with Gotye, and won Record of the Year, wore a sheer, sparkly dress with a skin-colored layer beneath, giving the illusion she was covered by strategically placed baubles. I'm fine with the dress code," she said on the red carpet.

Katy Perry bared her cleavage in a green gown, but Beyonce covered up in a black pantsuit for the red carpet and Rihanna chose an elegant red gown.

Redfoo, the flamboyant 37-year-old singer, had some fun and showed off his legs on the red carpet, sporting knee length pants to go with his suit. "I couldn't wear no Speedo ... so I got my suit on," he told on the red carpet.

Singer Adele's look was a little too conservative for some people's tastes. Her red and pink, flowered-covered frock featured a high neck.

As usual, there were some kooky outfits on display. Al Walser, who was nominated for Best Dance Recording for his single, I Can't Live Without You, donned an astronaut's space suit. Born in Switzerland to a mother from Lichtenstein and an African father, Walser explained that being from Lichtenstein was like being from another planet because it is so small. NO tags please

Actor Irrfan Khan, who has carved a niche for himself in Bollywood and Hollywood with meaningful roles, says he does not want to be tagged as a star or get bracketed in a particular slot. "I don't apply any tags to myself. I don't like it. I challenge tags. I don't want to get tied to any tag. I am an actor. I just want people to see my films. Whether I am an entertainer, performer, actor or star I don't care as long as audience loves my work," Irrfan said in an interview. Irrfan says the industry tries to bracket an actor in some slot, but he did not get trapped in it. "I think somewhere the industry also sees you as a product, they want to use you as a Irrfan Khan product and you keep fighting against it. You keep trying to do something new. I feel you should never allow yourself to get into any slot," he said.

He’s got the funny bone

After Bigg Boss, Imam Siddiqui will soon be seen on TV again. He has signed up Nautanki - The Comedy Theatre and is being paid a handsome sum for the show. And it's always fun to watch him on TV.

How does it feel to be back on TV?

I am challenging and surprising myself as an actor in comedy theatre. I hope it becomes my forte. Someone asked me if I can be a standup comedian, I looked at him wryly and said I don't need to stand up for comedy; I have it naturally in me.

Have you done comedy or acting before?

I come from an all boys' school. Because I was a bit effeminate in my tone and manner, teachers would cast me as a female character. I used to take inspiration from Ardh Nareshwara and Bal Gandharva. I have done many plays including Merchant Of Venice, Raisin In The Sun etc. I am a dancer and choreographer and I didn't want to get into Bollywood as such.

How many episodes of Nautanki Theatre you will be doing?

Imam SiddiquiI might be in the show for two or 20 episodes, it will entirely depend on the viewers response. I know the value I will add to the show and one can measure statistics of the episodes I am in and the ones I am not.

We heard they are paying you well, is it?

They are paying me a handsome sum. I don't want to reveal it as I don't want the income tax people running after me.

Will you also do TV serials in the near future?

Never. I chose to do Nautanki only because it is a reality show.

High on love & life

Sargun Mehta is on cloud nine as her boyfriend Ravi Dubey proposed her on the show Nach Baliye recently. She talks about her personal and professional life.

How did you like the surprise?

It was out of the blue completely. I didn't expect him to propose me on national television. It was a pleasant surprise indeed.

So when will the wedding bells ring?

Marriage is not happening in the near future. I don't know when it will but as both of us are currently working, we might take some time to decide.

Sargun MehtaIt must be tough to balance your TV show Kya Hua Tera Vaada and Nach Baliye?

Yes it is. Right now I am doing both and it is very taxing. I hardly get any time to sleep. I am trying my level best to dance well on Nach...

What have you learnt about Ravi during the show?

We both have developed a lot of patience. When two people are working together, it's important to accept each other's flaws. We both try to make up for each other's shortcomings and focus on our strengths.

How is it working with Mona Singh?

I love her company. She is fun loving and its wonderful working with her.

If your birthday is February 12...

Listen to your conscience in case of a moral dilemma. Although you want to protect your financial interests, you simply can't be implicated in a shady business deal. By alerting the authorities about a dangerous situation, you'll protect your professional reputation. It won't be difficult to find a position with a reputable company. Are you embroiled in a lawsuit? A decision will be rendered in your favour. Don't dwell on the pain this situation has caused. Move on to greener pastures.

The all too quick evolution of a complicated situation will stop you from reacting well. Despite all this you will remain in good spirits, which will allow you to act judiciously. Things will be solved in a friendly manner. When it comes to expressing your emotions, don't be so obvious. Avoid disproportionate over-reactions; otherwise, you'll only fan the flames. People are feeling unusually ugly at the moment - show a weakness and they'll pounce with fury.

This year you will have a regular flow of income although you might not manage to save a lot. However, you might purchase a property this year. There might be expenses related to movable or immovable property. Expenditure on a new business is also possible. You will get a new source of earning or land up with big profits, which could strengthen your financial position. If your money is stuck up somewhere, a little bit of effort can help you get it back.

You will have to be prepared for some dramatic changes at home, but if you try to adjust to them you will surely find them convenient and comfortable. Your mate or beloved will be pretty pleased if you purchase a lovely gift for him or her.

Your financial position will not be so good till July. However, you'll recover from this problem soon. New career opportunities are in store. Friends are all around you as one might expect; focus on all the things that you can do for them! Remember a devoted and tireless friend like you is a gift in itself!

Some of you may have a slight eye problem that will require you to take rest for few days. Take care of your diet and focus on your health.
