Karnataka steals the show at Surajkund
Surajkund (Faridabad), February 7 In fact, true to its punch line “one state, many worlds”, Karnataka is all over the sprawling 40-acre complex, showcasing its best of the best and blending tradition with modernity in the fields of art, culture and architecutre. And in the process, the culturally rich state is giving a run for their money to other states and foreign countries participating in the fair. The sheer magnificence of its culture showcased at the mela in the form of eight architecturally rich gates, 14 monument replicas, three stages styled to the themes of Hampi, Pattadakal and Belur, over 300 artistes, including 50 national and state awardees, is a tribute to the untiring efforts of 170 designers, artistes, masons, painters, and art directors. Be it little-known Kinnal, Bidriware and Lambaani wood works and handicrafts or well-known Channapatna wood inlay and Mysore's Ganjifa paintings, the stamp of Karnataka’s rich cultural heritage is in full bloom at the fair which is attracting a motley crowd, including a sizeable number of foreign tourists. “We have tried to promote various types of destinations, festivals, cuisines and art forms under the banner of ‘one state many worlds’,” Karnataka’s Additional Chief Secretary Arvind Jadhav said. The past, present and to a certain extent future through the use of technology like live web casting come alive at the mela, he added. Author-bureaucrat and Haryana’s Principal Secretary (Tourism) Vijai Vardhan, understandably impressed by Karnataka’s impressive show, asserted that it would a big challenge for the next year’s theme state of the mela to
match Karnataka’s performance. And to spice up the cultural scenario at the mela, a costume-based thematic fashion show choreographed by Karnataka’s best-known contemporary fashion designer Prasad Bidapa is lined up for February 9. Meanwhile, Managing Director of the Haryana Tourism Anand Mohan Sharan told The Tribune that the Surajkund mela, which was the biggest crafts fair in the world, had gone truly international this year with the participation of around 20 countries.”In fact, to accommodate more artisans, the mela ground had been expaned by a few acres to around 40 acres,” he added. Discoms propose 75 paise increase per unit to HERC
Sonepat, February 7 The Chairman of the commission, RN Prasher, and members, Rohtash Dahiya and Ram Pal were present on the occasion. While presenting the ARR, the Chairman and Managing Director, Uttar and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigams, Devender Singh, said the distribution companies (Discoms) propose to strengthen and augment the power distribution system, provide better services to consumers, power supply for more duration, minimise losses and implementation of Restructured Accelerated Power Development Reforms Programme. He said a massive investment of Rs 2,500 crore is proposed under an ambitious plan in this regard. A programme to strengthen the power distribution system was already under execution at a cost of Rs 500 crore which mainly included special maintenance and augmentation of the system. He said besides giving reliable and qualitative supply, a major stress has been put on improving the complaint redressal system to achieve a high level of consumer satisfaction. He said all-out efforts were being made to reduce aggregate technical and commercial losses and strengthen the power distribution system. He said Haryana was considering laying the distribution system on the pattern of Punjab to give qualitative and safe supply at proper voltage. It had already been started on a pilot basis. He said as many as 36 towns of the state would be covered under "Restructured Accelerate Power Development and
Reforms Programme" with an investment of Rs 186 crore. To avoid a tariff shock to consumers, he said, the Discoms proposed to the HERC to limit the impact only to 75 paise per unit, including 50 paise on account of the increase in cost on generation of electricity and 25 paise on account of increased cost in distribution and improvement and strengthening of the distribution system to recover the gap during a limited period. "This increase of 75 paise is being demanded on account of outstanding Fuel Surcharge Adjustment (FSA) and Regulatory Asset (untreated revenue gap) which has not been recovered though the Discoms have already incurred the cost,"
he explained. A comparison with other states at the current tariff was also placed before the Chairman and members of the HERC. It was submitted that the tariff in Haryana was lower as compared with many other states. Representatives of the consumers' sections presented their suggestions about reducing the line losses, curbing of power thefts, quick addressing of the complaints and uninterrupted supply of power during scheduled hours. The commission and the CMD assured them that their views would be taken into account. |

Slender trans-radial angioplasty done
Gurgaon, February 7 The doctor claimed that the procedure had been performed for the first time in the country and so far, it had been done in Japan only. He maintained that the special equipment required to perform the procedure had been sourced from Japan. Trans-radial angiography or angioplasty is conducted through wrist arteries instead of the traditional route of access through the groin and is being widely accepted across the world due to tangible advantages for patients, including reduced complications, more comfort and quicker recovery. After performing the surgery, Dr Chugh, principal consultant (interventional cardiology) at FMRI, said, “The 62-year-old patient visited us around two weeks ago with complaint of chest pain. Medical examination detected two blockages in his heart and we decided to go in for slender trans-radial angioplasty to remove the blockages." The procedure was telecast live to the cardiologists who attended the meet. The organisers said the meet was attended by medical specialists and academicians from various parts of the country and researchers from Japan, Canada, USA and France. “Trans-radial technique is essential in at least 3-5 per cent of cardiac patients who are not fit for traditional (femoral) angiography due to lower-limb problems, blocked arteries, obesity or being on blood-thinners. It is preferred as it promises quick recovery time. Patients need not to suffer from back pain or urinary retention requiring catheterisation,” he said, adding that this procedure was also associated with a lower rate of major bleeding and access-site complications, as well as a significant increase in net clinical benefit. |

Frequent accidents make people lose faith in state transport
Sirsa, February 7 Five members of a family, including three real brothers, were killed when a Haryana Roadways bus hit the Tata Qualis vehicle they were travelling near Mudhal in Bhiwani on Thursday. A man lost his life and several others were injured when a Haryana Roadways bus collided with a pick- up van near Agroha. A man and his nephew died when a Haryana Roadways bus hit a motorcycle they were riding near Talwandi Rana in Hisar. All these accidents and some more in which several persons have been injured occurred in the past one week and in all these cases, buses of the Haryana Roadways were involved. The manner in which the buses of the state transport services have been killing people on road due to reckless driving, people’s faith in the Haryana Roadways has been badly shattered. The buses of the state-owned public transport service zooming past other vehicles overtaking them with scant respect for the vehicles coming from the opposite sides is a common scene on the roads in Haryana. Most of these accidents have occurred when the Haryana Roadways buses were overtaking other vehicles while the vehicle that was involved in the accident was coming from the opposite side. In many cases, drivers of the roadways buses have been seen overtaking vehicles in such a manner that left little space for the vehicle coming from the opposite side leading to fatal accidents. If the vehicle, coming from the opposite side, happened to be a two-wheeler, its riders have been seen coming in highly disadvantageous position, as motorcyclists and scooterists tend to lose balance if they have to suddenly take their vehicle on the uneven roadsides. “Drivers and conductors of the roadways have been working under heavy stress due to the time and mileage parameters set by the government,” claimed a driver requesting anonymity. He said the drivers were in a hurry to cover the distance to reach their destination within the time prescribed by the department despite heavy rush of traffic these days. In a similar manner, the conductors press the driver to drive faster to reach the approaching station ahead of other buses, so that they could complete their targets of monetary collections per kilometer of the route. Both drivers and conductors are penalised by the department in case they fail to achieve their respective targets, he alleged. “With traffic on roads having increased manifold without a proportionate widening of highways, the roadways drivers are always under stress while driving on the roads,” the driver maintained. He alleged that the roadways workers did not get proper rest in between their duties. Sarbat Singh Poonia, state president of the Haryana Roadways Workers Union, alleged that there was an acute shortage of workers and over 400 buses of the roadways fleet were off the road due to this“The roadways authorities want to cover the mileage of these buses from the other buses plying on the roads,” Poonia alleged. The roadways authorities denied that there was any pressure on drivers and conductors and said they were supposed to drive their vehicles carefully. Lekh Raj, General Manager of the Haryana Roadways, Sirsa, said the roadways staff was provided the requisite rest so that they could perform their duties properly. “In the matter of fines for failure to meet the parameters, each case is decided on its merits and there were no hard and fast rules. Factors like foggy weather and road blocks are always taken into account,” he maintained. |
