Student killed  in rail mishap
: Gagandeep Singh (20), a resident of Akalian village in Mansa district was killed while Iqbal Singh of the same village sustained serious injuries when they were allegedly hit by the Bathinda-Ambala passenger train on Thursday. The victims were on their way to the local SD College. A case has been registered. zx

Two-day education summit begins
: A two day Punjab Education Summit 2013 commenced here on Thursday. Director-General of School Education KS Pannu inaugurated the summit, which is being attended by at least 700 district education officers and principals. The summit features the confluence of information and education these days.

Partially burnt body of youth found
: A partially burnt body of a youth was found lying adjoining to a railway line near Saila Khurd village on the Garhshankar-Jaijon track on Wednesday. Sub-Inspector Satish Kumar said the body had been sent to the Civil Hospital, Garhshankar, for a post-mortem. He said the victim appeared to be in his early twenties. He said the victim's face had been defaced probably to conceal his identity. A case has been registered.

Bag with Rs 85,000 snatched at gunpoint: Two unidentified motorcycle-borne youths snatched a bag containing Rs 85,000 at gunpoint from Surinder Singh, a resident of Mohalla Kaintha, Dasuya, near a rest house on the Hoshiarpur-Dasuya road. Surinder, a commission agent in Dasuya vegetable market, was returning after collecting cash. The assailants also fired in the air to scare the victim. 

12-year jail for raping 4-yr-old: Additional Sessions Judge Manjinder Singh has sentenced 12-year imprisonment to a villager in a rape case. A fine of Rs 25,000 has also been slapped on the convict, Mangat Ram alias Mangi of Behbalpur. Mangat Ram raped a four-year-old girl of Thinda village on December 14 last year. The convict enticed the girl by offering her sweets and took her to a nearby field where he raped her.

Travel agent booked for duping villager
: The police has registered a case of cheating against a Jalandhar-based travel agent, Narinder Singh, for allegedly duping a youth of Rs 2.5 lakh on the pretext of sending him to Canada. In his complaint, victim Gurpreet Singh's father Baldev Singh alleged that instead of sending his son to Canada, the accused sent him to Nepal.

: Three drug traffickers—Ravi Kumar of Nepal and Balram and Akash of Bihar — were sentenced to imprisonment for 10 years by the Additional District and Sessions Judge, Sukaram Pal.
